    +1 albanach. snapped acl in my knee about 12 yrs ago through BMX dirt jumps gone wrong. It hurt like nothing ever before and every subsequent injury to the knee was just as painful. NHS Southmead fixed it after 3 years waiting. Was an awful op, sick as dog when i came round and leg was swollen to buggery, had about 4 weeks off work and worked hard in physio to get the ‘range’ back. After 6 months of pysio and gym, i was in good shape and got in to MTB. Knee has been solid since, cartlidge is mashed and it creaks a lot but its stable and it doesn’t collapse for no reason. I ride MTB / Road about 200km a week and surf. Contact sports and things like squash are too risky as far as im concerned, would never want to go through injury and surgery again!!

    road = lycra (always)

    mtb = baggies is casual ride, lycra if racing or in enduro.

    your ride style (lots of down and not much up) may lean you towards baggies, if you are pedaling a lot of up and generally ride a bit more of an xc flavour you may be more inclined to wear lycra – a bit of generalisation i know

    Perth MTB has it right……i moved to Sydney in 2005, its a fantastic place to live. My son was born in Manly hospital and now goes to primary school – he does not know how good he has got it. We miss family and friends but Uk food, pubs etc not missed at all, you find similar if not better alternatives. Holidays – Fiji to Austraia is what Ibiza/Spain is to Uk

    25km each way, 4 times this week, usually 3 times though. I go past ocean beaches, harbour beaches and over the harbour bridge at the end in to city and office. Riding a condor steel road bike. timbuktu Messenger bag works for me, bought in 1994 in detroit, still going strong in sydney 18 years later!! I have trousers and shoes at work plus wash bag stuff. Just carry my shirt (ironed, then folded and placed in plastic bag) and my boxers and sox. The plastic bag stops the shirt from getting creased – thats why dry cleaning comes back in plastic wrapping!

    What Lardlover said

    I’m 40 in a couple of months and have been mtbing religiously for years. The nicolai is gathering dust and gets the odd blast, but just cant be bothered with all the faff – have been road riding a lot more with a group and i’m super keen. Also, signed up for an enduro so will not hang up the 959’s just yet 😀

    change is a good thing

    Some great responses – a few that have intrigued me most, say things like i’ve been riding for 15, 20, 25 years but i’m not that skilled at this that or the other…..jeez after 20years you should be nailing it!!!

    I rode BMX for 10 years before injury forced me to ride Mtb. The flats to spd conversion was ‘interesting’ but now having been on mtb and road for over 10 years, i dont think i could ride flats that well. My riding is just not that gnar anymore either but even when pushing hard at inners 6/7 years ago over jumps and drops it was always with spd on, no problems….main thing was having confidence and being able to handle the bike.

    +1 Derek starship. i advise govt on infrastructure design and delivery, the govt pays for it. Salary = money to pay for stuff…bills, petrol, bike bits…decorators (but not sh1t ones)

    I havent paid anything yet

    Martinhutch – it is over a dark brown varnish. 1 coat of zinzor primer, then two coats (but not all over or evenly) of satin enamel on the woodwork
