The trouble with a homage is you’ll wish it was the real thing every time you look at it. Was with me. Now have real thing.

You’ll need to be a distributor of something like transition, Satan Cruz or similar. and have shit hot mechanics and a strong online presence. And sponsor a few riders. Youll not get the passing trade in Belper to run a stand-alone shop otherwise.

I put my drum kit in the garage, play lightly with brushes and not sticks and never play later than 8pm. No complaints so far.

This year was about 50% of my disposable income but got 2 bucket list destinations ticked off (whistler and Kerala) and 2 ski trips. normally it’s about 25%.

Stunning autumnal sunshine round Matlock bath today. Muddy trails in places but great to be out.

My preferred use of surplus cash – pay off existing debt
If no debt, and you have an appetite for some risk, buy some stocks and shares and have a bit of fun on the markets. You can manage your own diverse portfolio of funds in a shares trading account ( i have one with the halifax), collect dividends and buy and sell at will but you need to keep a close eye on things as prices go up AND down!

Bought some watches 4 years ago they’ve gone up by 30-50% but that was more by luck than judgement
Also have you got a workplace share scheme these are often good and make you 20% or more with a 5 year lock in period, some times with tax benefits

I bought a Yamaha P35. It’s full size and plays like an upright and sounds good through pa or headphones. Quite a bit cheaper than your budget but couldn’t honestly see what else I’d need over and above the P35

Looking at doing the opposite to be honest! The stress and strain of Long working hours in corporate life is really not worth the financial rewards!

I go every year but usually on a black friday half price deal or last minute.com, no kids though so me and the missus have the disposable and can be super flexible on dates/locations. Normally spend 800-1k all in each for a week. The only families I know that take their kids skiing are super wealthy, my other pals who ski, either haven’t been since kids arrived or just leave the kids with the grandparents for a week to keep the cost down.

Was in exact same position few years back , got to 40 and suddenly realised life is marching on and have i really got the life I wanted, stuck in a rut, and a bit lost, its called a mid life re-evaluation, most people will experience this at some point, it can either give you the impetus to change direction or buckle down and carry on as you were. For me I was stressed with work, suffering depression, due to travelling all other the world with work ( which was very well paid) but little in the way of relaxation or social time with friends, and relationships and mental health suffered as a result.
Had a few years of ups and downs but took up Yoga, travel less with work and not chasing promotions anymore ( earn less but no issue there as I only ended up buying useless expensive stuff anyway) stopped comparing myself to others and where I should be in life rather than enjoying where I was and what I had, and now seem to be in a slightly better place, making new friends and trying new things ( ie join a band/drumming circle, took up road riding, photography, etc.. where you’ll meet people with similar interests) Earning more money does not bring happiness. I thought it would. It didn’t. Still get a bit of depression from time to time but I now know the signs and can make small life adjustments accordingly.

I just did exactly this, had some old 26 inch wheels in the garage albeit with 15 year old chris king hubs on, got them built onto some 29r 719s that i got off ebay all in cost rims spokes and build was £110. they now reside on my cx bike with road tyres on for a super smooth winter commute.

Got 3 mid range bikes as commuters. It’s a 25-35 mile round trip on country lanes. A carbon road bike for sunny days and long way rounds. A alum road bike for winter and a CX bike for when I fancy a change and go the off-road way round. Just put road tyres and guards on the CX though to make a full on winter commuter so the alu road bike is going to be dismantled. Each bike new was around £1000.

i’m not a sweaty betty so get on really well with merino base layers and sportwool jerseys ( howies, rapha, icebreaker) in cooler weather, and conversely find polyester jerseys do freeze my t1t5 off so only use them in hot weather. each to their own.

I guess its doable I got some roval slx from leisure lakes on my cycle to work ( alu rims) there was nothing in the letter that said what they needed to be made out of!
hoping to get some roval traverse carbon next time it comes round

Peakbikes and Ubyk websites have now both vanished. Hopefully that’s the end of the saga and no one else will be shafted by this unscrupulous business.

vancouver – do gas town for eats and beer, live music, etc.
Have a stroll round stanley park
North Vancouver – Ride some shore at Fromme and Seymour ( trailforks it).. epic go to the tap and barrel shipyards pub at the quayside
Squamish – hike the cheif – and back down the cable car – though it will be busy if the weathers good Alice lake also pretty for a hike
Ride some of the slab trails in squamish its mind blowing
Whistler – do the bike park for a day or two ( i did 4 days this year and it was plenty ) hiking is there but busy
Pemberton – sleepy backwater north of whistler not much to do except ride the trails and they are awesome
Vancouver island – this is where id spend most of the time, only had 3 days there this year but needed more. went with this guy for guiding, http://www.islandmountainrides.com/ lovely quaint town in Cumberland with ace brewery and eats. but you can explore as much as you want, kayaking hiking, fishing etc.
Should be plenty for a two week road trip
If you want to save money on car rental hire a Uhaul van, its $20 per day plus mileage and works out way cheaper than a car plus you can chuck your bikes / gear in the back!
Also whatever you do don’t fly with air canada rouge – appalling is putting it kindly.

Definitely too many cars. Boils down to selfish convenience. They are the ultimate in go anywhere any time convenience. But we are very adept at completely overlooking the detrimental effects of excessive car use like air pollution, noise, obesity and lack of excercise, climate change, and the deaths and injuries from accidents. I’m not sure there’s a solution. I’m a driver by the way and try to limit the number of journeys I make but often wonder how we got to this situation.

Paid 20% gross of salary in cash for my last car. New the car would have been more like 90%! I’ll keep it 5 years or so.

Been running a caad x Tiagra for the last 18months as my commuter. Bought 2nd hand for £550 but was like new. Stuck some 40mm gravel king sk tubeless tyres and roval wheels on as a £700 upgrade and it makes my commute 41km Round trip joy as I can now ride the bridal paths and forest roads and link up with tarmac stretches for a fun route to and from work. Just needs a new 105 hydro group set on which will make it perfect for me.

Just came back from 2 weeks of this! Did north shore, Squamish, Cumberland in vc island, coast gravity on Sunshine Coast and whistler bike park and pemberton. It blows morzine out of the water in a big way. Not cheap but a trip of a lifetime. Got a uhaul van and air bnb and either paid for a guide or Trailforks. Spent £3.5k for 1 person. You only live once! Have to ride every day it’s really that good.
