Glad you enjoyed your time out there Matt. If you could share GPX that would be great. Spent a few days there previously but keen to explore some new routes.

My own take on Manchester is that it feels sterile – lived in many places across the globe to make my opinion. The city should ‘feel’ way more than it does – in terms of size and supposed stature. Visitors and friends come based on the media hype, find out its nothing like its portrayed, leave and and won’t come back. Newcastle and the ‘real’ vibe is much more a northern city in my opinion. I also don’t get the scary, perceived violent side of the city – having grown up in Glasgow all im seeing here are dolls with (EVOC?) bum bags tied around their shoulder/waist.

Great, thanks – at present cant get it to boot up at all. Given my minimal IT skills here, simply stripping the HD out and connecting it to a USB Caddy will work? Could I connect to current work MacBook?

ALL – thanks for all your valued comments – greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your detailed comments. Re getting a job lined up pre move: this has been the ballache – ive tried for the past 12 months to set something up to no avail. This makes me concerned for the lack of options open to me when I actually arrive. Everyone is saying im bonkers giving up what ive got so had a lot of noise to contend with. If I had a job lined up id be there in a flash.

Ive spent a season up in Whistler and yeah loved it but I was conscious of how much of a bubble this place was. I was doing a lot with the WMSC / BC team but serious knee problems are putting a halt to that (at least for the time being).

Thanks man – the britexpats forum has been super useful but again really feel that in light of my situation the negativity prevails. Most on there that comment requlgarly take the view that youd be crazy to come to Canada with no job etc etc

I know what you mean about the opportunity but when it becomes a daily slog to make ends meat then the shine of living in such a wonderful place is dimmed somewhat so really trying to make as informed a decision as I could.

Great to hear this view – been having lengthy conversation with my mum along these lines.

Thanks and yeah will take you up on the offer to chat more. I visitied Toronto for a few weeks. Great place – for someone who spent over 10 years in London I was looking to get away from the big metropolis as a way of life so swayed over to BC for that reason. Toronto would no doubt increase the job opportunites tenfold. It felt so flat to me and very NYC. I think if I was doing this at 30 then id be there first, get Canadian experience and move to BC once I had this in the bag.

Good to hear and hopefully this can help. If you are going to make the move id be inclined to use the capital for property over there. Even though its your primary residence Canadian government will tax capital gains on it. Another thing which is putting me off – Canada tax on UK assets.

Hi – thanks for your comments. I was hoping you would write. Saw your van a few times down in Squamish. Blown away by the cost of housing around you now. Good friend just up from Braemar rd, bought nice offplan 3 bed for less than £400k – now valued at close to £1.25m. I would be coming over on my own and workwise after big skiing accident im working in financial services. Thus Vancouver or one of the other big cities is a necessity unfortunately – at least for time being.

Only my mum alive – so yes this is a concern. Shes all for it though (excuse for her to get out into the alpine!!)

Great to get your perspective. Im from Scotland but living south. Fallback plan is to head back up to Scoltand/ Northumberland. This is the safe option but don’t want to give up PR as I Know I wont ever consider doing this again at my age.

As above spent considerable time in Vancouver / Whistler / Squamish. As a city thought Van was real hotpotch so get what you say. What I loved about the place was the obvious location and accessibility to everything I love. I woudnt say i’d ever consider the place as the best top 3 location in the world which it seems to constantly get awared for. I love history so know exactly what youre saying above.

Im at a stage of my life where I want to reduce my city time and be able to live in the outdoors more. I feel like ive been couped up for the past 15 years in a city environment so really wanting to change this perspective and increase my quality of life. This is key for 2020 – be it Canada or UK.

Props for heading up to the Yukon…wow! Totally get what your saying but job would connect me city for the time being. Its having the balls just to say FGGG it!

Was up there mid week on 1 may when they were finishing the works. 5 guys were following trailer filling in pot holes. Asked why the change and was told it was to improve access for the shooting. Joke.

Cant recommend the Hightower LT enough!  Ride similar areas to you back in the UK and never feels too much bike.  Similarly just back from 3 weeks over in the Alps and felt sooo good!  I was a bit wary about the seat tube angle and all the comments on line – not a problem, so ignore anyone telling you otherwise.  Honestly love it so much, best bike i’ve had by far.  I find it actually quite playful when you work it hard.  I sized up so i’m 5,11/6 and went for an XL and find it perfect for me.

Curious to see if folk are running the DHRII in 2.3 on the back with a 30m internal rim and what their experience has been? Or is it best to go for a 2.4?

Absolutely- this happened to a friend who work tried to get rid off due to medical reasons and time off work. Got taken to court and the workplace had everything from his pc and used this as evidence. Emails and scanned docs from 6 years ago were pulled up as evidence. Scary!

Same thing is happening around the world – Vancouver has and continues to be inundated with Foreign, mostly Chinese investment. Majority don’t even choose to live there and see it purely as way means to stash their cash in a ‘safe’ foreign economy: http://www.makevancouvergreatagain.org. Vast amounts of profit are being made on this – pricing the locals out.

London’s exactly the same but due to the size of the city (c10m vs 0.5m) the difference is not so much in your face. If you look at the concentration of Central London property prices exactly the same trend – more of an international mix of Chinese and Russian.

@ali69er – good luck with the move back: just be prepared for a bit of a roller coaster. I found the huge excitement to see friends and family soon dwindle after a few months. Its tough to adjust and is something I never even contemplated.

I have just come back from Vancouver to the UK – number of reasons but mainly as I snapped my knee and leg and thought the NHS would do a better job in sorting me out and getting me back on my feet. Man was I wrong and this is was a bad decision. Getting decent work over there to pay for everything was also a struggle. I found my brain always comparing the UK to Canada and in the end thought my quality of life would be better back in the UK. As the months went by I began to think I made a big mistake. I miss the outdoor lifestyle so much I’m thinking of going back out after Ive saved some money. Honestly I felt more positive out there.

Spent close to 2 weeks in Davos in 2013 and then moved to St Moritz for a further 2 weeks. Unbelievable, natural riding and couldn’t recommend it more. Trying to get back out this summer. Search on Pinkbike for a group of Canadian’s review of their trip to Switzerland (think he’s called Lelau) where they’ve got loads of maps you can download for garmin or alike.

You can pick up some ‘cheapish’ POC VPD (original) on ebay – highly recommended. Expensive but worth it IMO

Awesome – great to hear! Ive got a good friend and his wife been trying to get across for some time. I think they thought it was going to be a lot easier than what it is and both (who are not on the wanted list) are finding it hard.

Funny isnt it – media image of Vancouver is of this amazing global city that you would do anything to live there. Personally I thought it was a total dump. Apart for the setting little going for it. At times felt I was in mainland China.

Definately the right place but very hard to do now – in terms of moving over permanently. Property now eyewateringly expensive – even now in Squamish – with crappy paid jobs.

Been trying to stay off sugar now for some time – or at least minimising it where ever possible. Another thing to try is large tablespoon full of organic cocunut oil and mix with near boiling water and lemon. Acts as a natural anti-biotic killing sugar/yeast overgrowth. Huge difference in weight and endurance in the gym.

Took some time to convince me but now try and get in daily.

Thanks for all the comments. Great to hear the comparison between the larger Nomad and Yeti. The Nomad seems way too much for me as my one bike with 165 travel.

If the Yeti pedals better than peoples old 5 inch trail bikes then I cant seem to go wrong.

I would also say that the SB6 and Bronson are not quite the same; SB6 is more like a Nomad, the Bronson more like a SB5. Both can charge down “enduro” tracks no worries though.

Thanks – re the above. The geometry and travel of the SB6C are pretty much on par with each other so why would the SB6C be more like the Nomad? I keep being told that the Bronson and the SB5C are more apples v apples.

Tom: Stunning bike btw. What you moving too?

Also Jim25 – what did you move from to get on the Yeti?

Thanks for the feedback – really useful.

Interesting to hear about the infinity link. I thought this was just one of those things that was used by non Yeti dealers. Each time i’v spoken to someone they highlight the weak link that is the infinity system and its longetivity. Good to hear from first hand experience that is actually a problem.

Any other views on the two bikes welcome.
