For info, I’ve had DT710s on order for 2 months now and still no sign of them turning up. Seems that DT Swiss have changed from Silverfish to Madison as their distributor and that this has completely disrupted the supply chain.

Madison less than helpful and the date on the computer keeps getting put back month-by-month with staff no idea if that date is achievable.

Personal preference, but DT swiss is a good durable hub, easy to maintain, quieter and you can upgrade star drives to get higher engagement hub if that’s a factor. On their 350 range, there’s a limited interchangeability of end caps, none at all on the front.

Hope is very popular and excellent build quality, but you pay for that.

Novatec are good hubs and have a nice feel, but I’ve no idea on durability.

Superstar is cheap and comes with a good warranty but two friends that went down this route had to use that earlier than I would have expected.

35 miles do still only do one way but cycle paths most of it and the fatty has priced to be just as adept as a Hardtail Wanga on slicks.
But i tend to do it when it’s dry and an easterly wind!

    So cheating basically…

Needs better photography, music, and slow mo and they’d be there, but ended up being lame and trying too hard for the challenge features, which is just a re-hash of old TG.

As for’stars’, Ramsay had no personality and rally cross needs 600+ bhp not just a mini with fogs.

not looking promising but will give it one more go.

The rider makes a bigger difference than any wheel size.

As has been said, if it can take a tapered steerer you will have enough fork choice to make a very good bike. That’s been the only limitation I’ve seen; tyres and rims are in plentiful supply.

Had similar issues with mine. Didn’t matter which way adjuster was turned or whether the button was above or below the seat post.

Not sure which end you cut it but mine i had to route part through to tube and turned out the barb at the seatpost had a tiny weep. Would hold for about 1 ride but then the return would slow down gradually and stop working.

I’d suggest a new barb or, at handlebar end, recut 3cm off the hose and screw back in keeping a firm pressure on the trigger whilst it cuts the thread into the hose.

Mildly disappointed at the lack of tool porn content 🙂

Power connection sounds like the biggest unknown or the potential to cost more than anticipated. Check with power company and add 50%

Thanks – will pass that on. I’m now missing it due to a ruptured knee ligament so no longer have the quandry between fat bike and full suss. 🙁

Three things that spring to mind are wheel dish, disc spacing or hub width. But someone with more knowledge should be along to tell you how to eliminate smt of these options.

Great for boiling water, not great for cooking. But the Alpkit one is well designed and less dosh than the Jetboil.

There are other stoves available but never had the need or the faff to do anything other than boil water, rehydrate food packs so can’t really give much context.

That’s the problem with this place. The OP gets so much flack and derision for asking a reaonable question rather than just an answer.

    Not exactly encouraging community spirit.

This has become the more ironic thread in the history of STW!

Prefer not to have a deafening noise while freewheeling and would go DT Swiss. Rachet hubs capable of upgrade to have even more engagement and are really quiet.

    The Enduro one arrived today.

Quite a big shell, but I’ve got a small noggin so doesn’t take much. Fits well with the adjuster and as good as the Catlike i was using. More coverage on the back of the head but might be the wrong time of year as it doesn’t seem quite as well vented.

Out the box the chin strap is in the wrong place so takes a bit of fiddling to get it less stangulating. But at the same time, it is a light, good coverage lid for £20 and can’t really argue with that. Might have been a £35 to £40 lid but as previously mentioned I would not have paid, and doubt it worth, £50 MRP.

Watching with interest. Struggling to get BR710 rim to hold a seal despite lots of careful taping with gorilla tape and about 150ml of stans.

Would a 20 inch fatbike tyre be any wider?

Friend has SS wheels and if you keep the boxes they do a free truing service. If the wheels have issues, that’s a good price and if they are still offering that service you have a back up.

37 miles by road, 34 by cycle routes. Occasionally do the way home taking the bike in by train. Enormous bore I know, but did it on the fat bike on Friday. Well there was actually snow over the forth road bridge so it almost felt in its element… Same time as my time on a hardtail with road tyres so went not bad and will do it again 🙂

I’ve not had great experiences on clay type mud with a fatty despite it being surpisingly adept on other terrain. It could be a feature of the tyres (on one floaters) but held a lot of mud. But could also be the ground was quite churned up by horses. Thinner mud seems ok 🙂

You could legitimately remove the word ‘biking’ fromm the title too.

Let me know how you get on – very interested in your progress. I’ve only built three wheels (no it wasn’t a trickle) and the spoke offset of these rims And the dish needed have confused the crap out of me. Two local wheel builders have declined to do it but think i have found one in Larbert, but considering giving it a go. Same rim but El Guapo 170 hub.

Fatbike ownership seems to turn the owner into an insufferable bore who must mention the thing at every possible opportunity.

Surprising that, especially since the OP created a thread was looking for some balanced views on the subject rather irrelevant sniping…

Back on topic, I did find there to be a bit of an annoying bob when running lower tyre pressures but this has been remedied by an oval chainring. No difference really to modifying any other bike to suit riding style and feedback.

nedrapier nailed it. Give it a try and leave the polarised opinions alone and reach your own conclusions. If it doesn’t work there are lots of people looking to give it a go so you should move it on.

I tried and I’ve been bitten. It’s a different sort of riding and I found it dull on sand. Grip uphill is good and floats through mud easier. More spray and muck from larger tyres. Rolls nicely on natural stuff. Taken it to the red at Glentress and Innerleithen reds and Spooky Wood had me giggling like a 5 year old but the next trail down was really harsh. Inners just about gave me carpal tunnel syndrome. But berms are a whole lot faster!

Depending on the bike, you can get a little or a lot more weight but I reckoned it would help get fitness better quicker. However, I’ve already buckled and am going Bluto fork and drilled wheels to take a bit of the aches and pains off my old body.

Kamakazie – C&B seen do a 3 x Cree light and good after sales support for less than an Aldi unbranded light. They’ve replaced a battery for me no quibble and sent the replacement out before I returned the faulty item. Think you’re indirectly paying for that 3 year warranty IMHO

M-Wave worked quite well as the ‘stays’ can widen to accommodate a variety of sizes. Fairly budget (got them on sale at £55) but did the job on four wheels that are amazingly still intact and true-ish

I regularly get issues at work using IE9 and the ads will not close but re-direct. Not knowing how all this works I thought it was the ads being sneaky to generate more hits rather than anything STW related, and thought this accounted for why Audia and Maserati believed they were getting so many hits from STW!

Using IE9, in Edinburgh and I dont have any screen grabs but last week when I was there it was the car banners at the top that were redirecting.

I always think that super-injuction is either the perserve of the super-rich and sensitive, or that there is something that needs covered up.

Not actually all that interesting but funny all the same.

The torque needed for cycling use shouldn’t present too much of an issue. But ones with handles will make life easier. Spent 25 on a t handle sealey set that worked well on motorbike but lacked reach. Picked up a set from aldi for a tenner that have been surprisingly robust despite lots of ham fisted treatment over three years on bike and motorbike.

These look very similar (comes with torx too) but could not vouch got these specific ones

    similar ones

It’s a pain, but not a disaster – we have a floor of IT people who think it’s ok to CTW and not shower at all. Sometimes they use meeting rooms and they need fumigated afterwards.

I’ve got the lower level/budget 350 hubs and really pleased with them. A lot quieter than the clicky Hopes and you can get the star ratchets with 36 teeth that gives a really quick engagement. They are an expensive upgrade at RRP but got mine from Poland on ebay and they arrived very quickly.

Agree with the above. Jelly mould cbr6 was rare as hen’s teeth for parts and the large expanses of plastics took widespread and varied damage even on minor offs. I’d imagine the thou suffered the same issue compounded by riders tending to ride bigger mileage.

I’m lost now. So is a sausage roll a pie? Surely not as it has open ends, but I could almost buy the beef wellington pie idea.

Surely some element of gravy/sauce is required for a pie.

An open end might disqualify the hairy pie on the same grounds as sausage roll though…
