Personally, i wouldn’t buy a Macbook, but that’s not to say you shouldn’t. That processor is a few generations old now, and the HDD will be pretty slow in comparison to the more recent SSDs.

That said, it’ll be plenty good enough for “general use”, assuming you mean internet surfing…

Edit – Dr Google reckons the processor might not be a few generations old…

20 posts, and no mention of the Sturmy Archer? An old 3 speed will cost you peanuts and will go for decades without a service.

Reverse-compatibility is prevented by architectural differences betwixt the platforms, not software (x86 vs PowerPC). Admittedly, the uninitiated would probably not know that…

There must be some kind of OS flash available…?

These are the genuine Military issue watches. Available new for muchly over budget, but usually available here for well within budget (in fact, they often sell them by the boxful).

edit – looks like the bog-o ones are available for about £130.

    Ah yes; Center Parcs…

To the uninitiated: the adverts you see to the right of your screen are determined by your previous internet activity.

Someone (i think it may have been Brant) once said that “the best bike in the world is the once you can jump on and ride right now”. Ultimately, the bike isn’t what’s important; the important thing is getting out into the wilderness and enjoying yourself; the bike is simply a tool.

Keep riding as you are, and don’t worry about the kit. Just laugh at the “all the gear, no idea” types on their £5k carbon machines, who you sail past on the climbs.

Oh, and convert your bike to SS (when your gears break, obviously).

What age kids? I only ask, as my 4- and 6-year olds can use Windows 7 for some basic things (playing flash games, searching for pictures of kittens, drawing pictures of “ultimate epic awesome power rangers”, etc.

If they can work W7 (with a little guidance initially), then they’ll be fine with Mint or similar.

He was doing some filming work at Manchester Veldrome last week. We’ve all been strictly forbidden from tweeting, Instagramming etc the stuff that he did but it was very impressive!

You’ve done well at keeping that a secret 😉

Any tips on polishing up crank arms? Just nitromorse (sp?) and elbow grease? I’ve got some old square tapered RaceFace cranks that’d look nice polished up…

Well it get a bit strange, but i enjoyed it. A normal (ish) chap, on normal trails on a normal bike.

Good to see the old 456 getting an outing, too!

They had to change the tubing slightly for the CEN regulations a couple of years ago; the newuns have a slightly larger top-tube, if i remember correctly.

If you can detect a difference in the ride quality betwixt them, then you’re a better rider than me!

You can’t go wrong with an Inbred, in my opinion.

I have the bogo non-paperwhite non-3g version. It’s about the best thing i own.

As above, plenty of scope for wifi access makes 3G superfluous. Especially if you also own a smartphone (which is pretty much everyone nowerdays).

Anyway, it seems some on STW don’t like fancy dress. My friends in the Fancy Dress media will be very interested in this…

Laughing at horrible stuff is what humour was invented for.

    Exactly.

^^^ Sorry, tried to say “from too tight to just right in a few hundred miles”

Perhaps a bit left field; have you tried using an old (stretched) chain? My magic ratio SS goes from too tight to too slack after a few hundred miles.

I started running this time last year. I’ve not lost the love for biking, but since moving to Cambs i’ve been running loads more than biking.

Took part in a road race leauge last year, and tne cross country season starts in a few weeks! If i lived near some proper hills, i’d be riding more, though.

I started running this time last year. I used to hate running, but since dedicating some time to learning how to do it properly, i’ve come to really enjoy it.

I started off hobbling my way around a 3k loop (running used to really aggravate my lower back until i looked at my technique properly), but before too long i could tick off a 10k without a second thought. I did 17 miles the other week; wearing boots, carrying a 35lb bergen and a rifle.

I’m by no means a good runner, i just enjoy it. I tend to just bumble along at 10:00ish/mi. In my eyes, if it feels like hard work, you’re working too hard!

And i agree about trail running. Save the roads for driving on, and get out into the hills for biking/running/playing!

I don’t think it’s meant to be a political commentary. And anyway, when did two vehicles and some Hesco count as “well equipped”?

Accept it for what it is – squaddie humor; it’s pretty accurate in that regard, too.

Make your way to The Crown at Churchill on a weekday evening, and there’s bound to be some local riders heading up into the hills. Or speak to Somerset Bikes in WsM, who arrange group rides (or at least used to).

There’s some great riding up on the Mendips, but it does suffer badly with the weather.

I never found the price to be excessive… It’s double the price of a “normal” magazine, but it’s more than double the content (and 5x the quality). And seeing as it was only released every-other-month, the subscription price works out to be pretty similar.

What shite news… What to subscribe to now, then? Has Singletrack changed much in recent years? I always thought it looked like someones A-Level photography coursework…

Nothing to contribute i’m afraid, other than to say i like your handiwork! I’d be interested to learn more about how it was made; did you use a jig?

Can you recommend any further reading for someone fancying having a bash?

One you enjoy riding. I’d spend a third of that on an Inbred, personally. Spend the change on Flumps.

That John Petrucci solo does nothing for me. He pretty much replicates the original, note for note, until it turns into pointless widdly noise at the end.

To be fair, that was the intention. They played a full set of their own stuff, and then casually rattled off the whole of Dark Side of the Moon by way of tribute. They did something similar with the Metallica’s Black album and Maiden’s Number of the Beast.

A lot of people don’t like Petrucci, but he’s one of my favorites.

Better still, take the mechs off altogether! Failing that, the suggestion above is correct. SLX is good quality gear, but so is Deore; functionally, they’ll be pretty much indistinguishable.

I’ll admit to never realising Prince was such a good guitarist…

I’ll see your Prince, and raise you a John Petrucci (i realise it’s a cover, but go with it):
