I heard something similar put forward as to why there was never a military version of Concorde – if they’d fitted machine guns it would have ended up flying into it’s own bullets as it would be flying faster than they did.

I am struggling to think of a scenario when you’d want machine guns on the leading edge of a large passenger jet…

If you’re overly bothered about weight, then i’d suggest you’re looking at the wrong frame.

Clearcoat it. All the rust / scratches just detail it’s history, and unless it’s been stored in the sea, then that rust will only be cosmetic.

I only managed about 60 seconds… Shame, as i’m sure that, given the chance, Hannah Whatsherface could make some really interesting documentaries.

I had some hi-tec Magnums at work for a while. They are comfy and light, but not very hard wearing. Can’t speak for the rest of the range, though. Also, vibram soles are excellent.

I also remember hi-tec being a real no-no at school, along with the tesco “no frills” range!

A bearing hammered into the hinge bolt works very well

Speaking from bitter experience there? Out of interest, how might one then remove the door? Drill the bearing out?

I’m not suggesting the FB were in the wrong, i’m suggesting the driver / passenger of the truck should have waded out through the ankle-deep water. I’d be embarrassed to have been “rescued” from there.

Nothing in particular i want to know, just trying to do some research and inform decisions in the future. Dr Google either sends me to The Guardian or the National Union of Teachers (which reads like a Labour press release).

AA – You mention that free schools are outside of Local Authority control. Please excuse my ignorance; what does the Local Authority control in a “conventional” state school?

May be of interest to some; a book on the same subject, currently going for one of your English Pounds.

    I’m not sure that’s genuine…

    Anyway, strictly speaking it’s a C47, not a DC3. 😉

The Gradwell piece was phenomenal. And, as above, “then we started to die”. Unbelievable.

Incredible people, from an incredible time.

I’mm be watching this evening. Many thanks for the pointer!

I’m always fascinated at how gentlemanly the u-boat war began. For example, U-48 (the most successful u-boat of the war) sank SS Firby on 11 Sep 39, and broadcast a message saying:

“I have sunk the British steamer Firby. Posit 59°40’N 13°50’W. Save the crew if you please. German submarine”

I really want to like BG, but i can’t. I’ve been wondering why this is, and i think i’ve come up with the answer; i’m just too old. He’s like the Radio 1 of survivalists, with Ray Mears being Radio 2.

Really admire the stuff he does with various youth organisations, but his TV stuff is generally unwatchable.

I must be the only R4 listener who can’t stand Just a Minute.

Nope, you’re not. I hate it.

Some to get you going. Unless you need power / expansion or can repair your own machine / plan on upgrading I’d always go for a laptop over a desktop these days

I’m going to respectfully disagree, for the following reasons:

Firstly, a PC will give you much more performance for the same money (or alternatively the same performance for less money). Secondly, a PC will be much more future proof than a laptop, since you can upgrade HDDs, optical drives, memory, et cetera (or replace them if they break). Thirdly (and anecdotaly), in my experience laptops can often become unreliable over time, notably at the hinge.

In summary, if you don’t need mobility, then a PC wins every time in my opinion.

To the OP – you’ll get a decent PC for much less than £600. Try here for starters.

    What made it so reliable?

Wrecker is probably best to answer this one than me… i had a quick fam on one of these a few years ago. They’re reliable because they’re so simple. There’s not really even a proper safety catch, you just wedge the change lever in behind the bolt carrier.

They are pretty heavy though, and not very accurate (in my hands, at least).

Eh ? When you boot into Linux then you’re running Linux not Windows so who cares what state your Windows install is in.

You are, of course, quite right. However, you’d still have to live with the comedy way Windows manages files.

I can understand why people like to dual boot, but unless you need a specific application professionally, then it’s a bit half cocked in my opinion.

To the OP – i can’t comment on Memory Map, but there are plenty of itunes equivalents out there. Also, you don’t need to worry about antiviruses.

A quick google will reveal loads of walkthroughs of a clean install. You’ll need to create a boot disk (either on a DVD or USB stick) and tinker with the BIOS to let the computer know where you want to boot from. Google will reveal all; it really is much simpler than it sounds.

Linux Mint fan, here – although i’ve not had cause to use any version newer than 13.

Glad you’re getting on with your xubuntu install. I’d definately recommend a clean install, though. When you dual boot with a windows install, you also carry over all the bugs. You’ll get a much better experience if you back up all your files and do a clean install (wipe your hard drive (windows and all) and install Linux onto an otherwise blank drive).

    flexy non heel strike type

If there’s no padding/support in them, then there’s nothing to wear out, Shirley? Unless the tread is worn through, then they’re still serviceable. The only reason they suggest you should change “normal” trainers regularly is because the support wears out and changes your gait.

Personally, i’d look elsewhere. I don’t think the trainers are the problem here.

I hate to say it, but 200 quid is not enough for a decent PC. You’ll be looking closer to 500 as an entry level.

As much as i love my PC, i’ll have to recommend an Xbox or similar.

She’s got that spacious 109″ S11A but she still puts the valuable bike ON THE ROOF?

I suspect it’s probably more secure up there than inside!

Enjoyable video, but no soft-focus toytown effects. Or shots of dew drops. Unforgivable ommittions, in my opinion.

Perhaps a little late to this party…

I am almost exactly 5’11″ish, and ride an 18″ 456. It’s been great for me, but in retrospect i should have probably bought a 20″.

    20″ gets my vote.

    Freshly pressed shoes

Not one i’d go for, but perhaps it’s all the rage these days…?

As above, i’d just go in a suit. You can’t go wrong by dressing too smartly, in my opinion. Unless perhaps you turn up with a bowler hat.

Personally, i wouldn’t recommend trying to clone the existing drive, as you’ll just carry over everything; data, settings, bugs, registry errors, driver faults, et cetera… As above, assuming your copy of Windows was above board (and you can prove it), then MS will help you out when you need to re-install.

    That said, i’d install Linux!

I’ve got… the old pike…Happy to give it a new home for very sensible money

    There’s your answer!

The old Pikes were fantastic forks. Not light or fancy, but just honest, robust kit. Pretty much like your 456, to be fair.

An excellent free to play game is team fortress 2,you’ll have to download steam first but that’s free too

Agreed. CoD is for kids who take it far too seriously. TF2 is bloody good, ridiculous, fun. Also, it’s a completely even playing field, so if you’re getting beaten, it’s not because someone else has paid for better stuff than you.

I’ve not had a proper ganders at the MTP stuff though.

Imagine CS95 but with layers of pockets upon useless pockets, which makes even the “hot weather” one too heavy for temperate use, and also makes it impossible to iron properly. Then add loads of velcro, to ensure that you become stuck to your mates when sat next to them in a vehicle. Then add some more velcro, so everything sticks to it inside your washing machine. Then move the pen-holder to the wrong side.

    Otherwise, brilliant.

You’re assuming that the Military always want to remain hidden. How would that translate to an overt peacekeeping scenario like ISAF? When the professionals want to remain unseen, they will do.
