Interesting thread, this.

Since this was posted, I’ve done some reading on the subject. I’ve had a stab at Marcus’ Meditations (although I found it a difficult read). I’m reading through Derren Brown’s latest book, which covers Stoicism quite a bit.

    Thanks for posting!

I just dug into a genre and pressed ‘>>’ on an individual artist. It opened my Spotify and opened their artist page.

    Bloody clever. Good find.

It’s just a load of sneering sarcasm about something it is virtually impossible not to be sneeringly sarcastic about.

Is that not exactly the point of sarcasm? To willfully make an obviously stupid statement, in the hope that the receiver will apply some level of scepticism and come to a more intellectually sound conclusion?

There are much better options within defence, I’d suggest. Either elsewhere in the RLC, or in the other services. In my (biased) opinion, obviously.

The Chef trades are not in a good place unfortunately, and over the last few years have been easy prey for contractors.

The only places safe from the contractors are the deployable roles.

I’ve always fancied a Crunch. Anyone use one?

I have one which stays in my work jacket pocket. It’s a bit chunky to carry around all the time, and there aren’t that many occasions when it gets used. Mostly comes out when I need to clamp something steel and bend it back into shape. It also doesn’t have a straight blade, only a serrated one, which may or may not be an issue for you.

    There’s only one replacement for a leatherman…

The Wave is meant to be the pick of the bunch, but personally i carry a Sideclip every day; it’s discontinued now, but I’ve had it 15+ years and use it all the time.

You can’t go wrong with a Wave. Or perhaps a Rebar might be ideal?

I started in a logistics role at 18 with zero qualifications and zero experience. I’m now (11 years on) in a management role, earning good money, getting loads of great experience, and working towards a Logistics Management BSc.

Every company anywhere in the world ( with a few possible exceptions in the service industry ) needs some kind of logistics function in order to work. It’s a huge field with loads of opportunities.
I take it you were using chalk as well…?
I’ve never tried chalk (although I’ve been meaning to), so I imagine it’s a similar result.

I’ve also been out of it for a couple of weeks, due to life and work getting in the way.

Had an epiphany at the gym this afternoon…

I’ve been struggling with grip strength on DL for a while now, and really don’t want to resort to wrist straps. Someone suggested wrapping a paper towel around the bar for a bit of extra grip.

Well, hallelujah! It was like taking 40kg off the bar. What an incredible difference.

You know that feeling, when you’re reading a book and turn over two pages at once…?

There’s a load of decent riding in the Mendips, but realistically you’d need a local with you to get the most out of it. The trails also suffer really badly in wet weather.

Worlebury Woods are on top of a hill right next to the town, and there are a couple of decent places to play in there, including a jumps area and pump track on the western end.

The car weighs just over a ton in road going form (If we assume it hasn’t been stripped). I don’t know what the weight distribution is, but it’ll clearly be well under 50:50.

It’s also at the end of a 2-metre lever.

She’s very quick to extend, and you’ll notice how her shoulders shrug at the top; you’d not be able to do that with a heavy load. I suspect she’s well inside own her capacity lifting that. It looks impressive (which is clearly the objective) but it’s pretty meaningless, in my opinion.

Seconded; thanks again for organising a great few hours riding! Lovely bunch of people, great weather, marching band, beautiful scenery… What more could anyone ask for?

Only failed to make one climb!

That’ll learn me for tempting fate.

Just got back from the hospital with my little girl. I suspect I won’t make it tomorrow.
Someone at work lent me a cd of a band called Avenged Sevenfold
How long ago was that?

Their latest album is called ‘The Stage’, and the first track is of the same name:

    Lovely, thank you.

I bought a whetstone the other day (because of a STW thread) so I’ve been enjoying sharpening all the kitchen knives / axes / chisels I can find…

Steels don’t sharpen knives, but you should have one.

    Please may you elaborate?

I’ve recently restored a huge clever which was in a bit of a state. Used it for some Chinese the other day; take a whole chicken and it glides straight down the middle (through bone and everyfink).

They don’t mek’ ‘um like they used to…

Get on gumtree and buy an old one. Record are a name to look for, as are Woden and Paramo. They cost very little, even for big ones.

You know how surnames were traditionally related to the person’s job… Mr Smith would be the blacksmith, Mr Baker would be a baker…

    What would Mr Dickinson do?

I’m not sure what the difference is betwixt Parsons- and non Parsons-Jack Russell, but our standard model is lovely. Soft, playful, intelligent, energetic, attentive… perfect little family dog.

We spent a lot of time doing training when she was little though. Puppy socialisation classes, and obedience classes. I’d definitely do the same with any dog we get in future.

don’t leave food lying around, problem solved?

I disagree; that’s not problem solved, that’s problem masked. And therein lies the issue. I can’t allow either dog to think that is acceptable behaviour.

If I tolerate this, then the children will be next. (I really like that… Perhaps I’ll write a song about it one day).

Currently reading Operation MINCEMEAT. Well recommended.

Also, for wartime aviation stuff try ‘Wings on my Sleeve’, ‘First Light’, and ‘Enemy Coast Ahead’.

Thick as a Brick and Aqualung are classics. I also spent some time listening to the Christmas album recently. I’m not sure why.

I think a 50% deload might be a bit much. See how you feel; I suspect you’ll be upping the weight pretty quickly.

Imagine setting up woodworking courses for students and apprentices building Mosquito airframes

With any luck, they’ll do a production run. Or perhaps they could sell a kit, like Caterham or Westfield do!

From Carterton. It all looks like country lanes on the map, and Google reckons it’ll be about a 90ish minutes ride (although i’m not sure what speed that is calculated on).

Mmm. Trying to decide if 20 miles each way is ‘riding distance’ for a chunky singlespeeder…
