Glad you’re enjoying your new ‘uns! I use a pair of Merrell Trail Gloves myself:

I really like them, although there’re really designed for use in drier climes – they were pretty well useless in last winters’ Cross Country season, especially considering that the rest of the field were all using spikes or fell shoes! They get used for all my running, both road and trail. In fact, my old ‘conventional’ trainers really hurt the outsides of my feet now, so i can’t run in them.

4 pages of (mostly) toy aircraft, and now we’re getting to the decent ones!

The C130J is about as good as they come!

Shirley, even without the native support you can just export the .gpx files manually?

From the DC Rainmaker site that Jamie linked to earlier:

The Garmin FR220 does not contain a cycling function, nor any way to connect to speed/cadence sensors while cycling. It does however contain the ability to switch the display metric from pace (usually displayed as minutes/mile or minutes/kilometer) to speed (i.e. MPH/KPH). You can do this via the the Settings > Activity Settings > Data Screens menu, and then within one of your data pages you can select the data field you want to change and change it to Speed.

At this point the unit will display speed (MPH or KPH depending on your preferences) as one of the data fields.

The only challenge with this particular workaround though is that by default the workout will still be uploaded to Garmin Connect as a ‘Run’, rather than a ‘Bike’ workout, which means that it’ll incorrectly trigger both PR’s on the unit (i.e. fastest 5KM) as well as incorrectly triggering those on Garmin Connect.

On the Garmin Connect side however you can go ahead and modify the workout type to be ‘Cycling’ which will then address the issue there. On a subsequent synchronization it’ll pull that PR information back down to the watch.

Unfortunately, the FR220 is priced too close to the Ambit 2R for my liking. Unless there’s some good deals out there that i don’t know about? They are both about £210 on Amazon.

Jamie – I do like the look of the Fenix, but it’s priced closer to £300 when you factor in the HRM.

You’ll be lucky to get any Sturmey Archer hubs at the minute; they’re not making any more until after the war:

(Joke borrowed from a fellow STWer on another thread)

Brookes also make their gear in the UK, so that’s saddle and grips sorted.

In my experience, you can save a lot of money by building it yourself. By buying one already built, you are simply employing someone to build it for you. They only take a couple of hours to build (there’s only really eight or so main components), require no specialist tools and will give you the skills required to tinker with it, if needed.

That said, i built my last one two whole years ago, so it’s perhaps all changed since then!

I can’t comment on the UE, but we have the Bose and it’s awesome.

Great sound, plenty loud enough, plenty of battery life, and a really robust feeling piece of kit. Well recommended.

Bose do a 30-day no question return if you’re not sure.

Can you translate that into English please?

i suspect the problem might be that this chap has been sold a keyboard with no punctuation on it this is quite clearly a very serious problem that makes it very difficult to understand what is being said i propose we all club together and begin a petition what say you

Also, taking the kids bivving sounds like a great idea! I’ve been collecting some extra gear recently with an eye on taking my 6-year-old out, sometime this summer. I doubt you’ll have much luck buying a small bivvi bag, but perhaps you could tailor a larger one?

    Good luck!

if you buy it from qvc they let you try it out for 30 days and send it back for full refund if you’re not happy with it.

You get that from the main dealers.

Mrs D got one a few weeks ago. I think it’s great! There’s plenty of rich sound to fill a moderate indoor space. It usually sounds best atop something that will help generate sound; the bread bin works well!

After the advent of the highly useful, and I imagine wildly successful, share function. Imagine there are many new exciting features coming to STW. As a result, I was thinking about the features other forums have, that would be genuinely useful on STW.

    In no particular order:

    1. PM Functions – Would allow easy communications between members, particularly in the classifieds, and would negate the need for paging threads, obfuscated email addresses in profiles, and also may help mods/admins contact users if they have out of date email addresses.

Obviously, it also gets around the issue of some members not having emails in profile, which is not always the case that the member doesn’t want to be contacted. They may have just forgotten, or assumed their account email is used.

    2. The option to have absolute dates, rather than relative – When searching through old threads, it would be handy to know when information was posted. As, for example, any thread posted 12-24 months ago, is simply logged as ‘posted one year ago’

    3. Being able to quote a users posts via 1 button – Anyone who says its the most efficient way to quote a users post, has never been on any other web forum. It would totes amazeballz to just be able to have a ‘reply” button on every post. You could have it next to the share one.

….I know none of the above will happen, but the thread kills a few mins while I wait for the washing machine to finish.

P.S Oh, and animated avatars, and sigs, of course.

    POSTED 4 MINUTES AGO # REPORT-POST

The problem with the ‘Quote’ idea is that people tend to re-quote huge reams of text and/or images.

    Good ideas otherwise.

Brant – do you have any of the old carbon 29er forks kicking around in the warehouse anywhere? The website suggests you have the 26″ ones, but i’m after a 29″.

Fair point, Northwind. You’re right, it does work better as you describe.

There’s an NPC in the town of Kalm (i think) who advises you to get a Chocobo to cross the marshland in which the Zolm lives. Actually, there’s a brilliant enemy-skill to be learned from it.

We got a Lisa and a Krusty the other day. The staff at the Lego shops can often discern them just by feeling the packets… Might be worth a trip to your local one if you’re after a specific character?

‘Allyness’ is best described as military fashion sense, i.e. wearing various non-issue items, or modifying issue clothing or equipment in order to look subtly different from one’s peers. This can cause chaos when the entire battalion is trying to do the same thing: ‘Oh my God! ‘He’s wearing the same smock as me!’

I was about to suggest the Fixie, but that’s been going on for years now…

I’ve also had problems with Handbrake (the picture comes out in green horizontal lines). I used a free trial of DVDFab, and it worked a treat. It also made much better use of my graphics processor, so it was ripping films in around 10% of the time it took Handbrake.

I agree about the over-restoration. All that history was lost under a coat of green.

As for Glenister, i thought he was alright. Without a comedy bellend character, you just have some boring old men talking about how ‘they just don’t make them like this anymore’. Great if you’re an enthusiast, but it doesn’t make for very good TV.

I came from a situation very similar to yours, all of 10 years ago. I failed completely at school (i’m not going to try and make excuses, i just wasn’t interested). At the age of 16, i got a job working in a dark, smelly factory for £3/hr.

At the age of 18, i joined the Forces. I’m now earning £30k, with a great work/life balance and loads of experience in a widely employed field. I was recently given the opportunity to earn a degree (a proper BSc, from a proper University) for the princely sum of about £400. Unfortunately, i didn’t meet the prerequisites; GCSEs. So here i am, 10 years later, studying for the exams i should have done at your age (the Forces are paying for much of that, too).

I would seriously recommend looking into the Forces (Note the word ‘Forces’, not ‘Army’ – there’s a whole lot on offer from all three Services).

    Regards,

    War Machine Bellend.

Brilliant. Great to see old bikes given a new lease of life. If i ever move back to the Bristol area, i’ll be sure to get involved with the project!

I do some work with the Princes Trust, so i know how these projects help young people.
