I have a custom steel frame with a cerekote finish. I think it’s slightly less durable than a paint finish – probably lighter in weight though.

Damn, I’ve not had much luck with the organic Shimano L03A. Tempted to try sintered though and interested to hear about ceramic.

I also ordered some rubber washers to fit somewhere on my callipers/bolts – will I die?!

Sorry to bring up an old thread. I thought about creating a new one but found this one in a search.

    @yohandsome
how did you get on with your sintered pads?

I’ve been dreading this time of year after riding through last winter on my first bike with hydraulic disc brakes. All through winter my brakes were honking in the wet (and sometimes in the dry), it was embarrassing! I live in Leicestershire where it’s pretty flat, so there’s not a lot of braking. So coming to a stop in a quiet village on an early morning winter ride was painful.

I’ve tried all sorts of remedies, different pads, different rotors, sanding, baking, alignment, bleeding, bedding in, regular isoprop cleaning, even switched to Hope RX4s with their own 160mm rotors. Actually I even swapped my semi-custom built frame for a Condor Fratello in the hope it was the resonant frequency of my old frame – no luck as I discovered yesterday.

I built up the Condor this summer, sold the RX4s and switched back to my Ultegra calipers, and bought some 140mm Galfer road rotors. Throughout the summer they’ve been great, no noise at all in the dry – and I had high hopes for riding in the wet.

Well I went on the club ride yesterday morning – it was dry on the way out but I had to leave my mates at the cafe as I needed to get home. It pissed it down all the way home and it was rather cold. My brakes were absolutely awful, honking so loud. Braking performance was there, but definitely diminished. If I braked pretty hard it would stop the honking until next time. But by the time the honking goes away I’m already slowed down enough to not need to brake silently!

Surely brake squeal is low on their list of priorities.

I’ve read so many of these threads and I always skip the posts that say something about ignoring the noise, or using it to warn others of your presence. Because IT IS important. I consider myself a considerate road user, and I was faced with a pretty awkward situation yesterday on my way home. I was riding down a steep hill, with 2 people leading 4 horses down it in the same side of the road as me. Either I try to slow down to pass considerately, but honking all the way, or just speed past without any brakes. I did a bit of both a profusely apologised as the horses spooked to the honks.

My friend has some new L03A pads for me to try – in case mine are just too contaminated. Otherwise I’d be interested in trying sintered although it seems completely counter intuitive – but I can’t face another winter of wet rides!

Got my Argos DFF today so I did 2 chains in the garage. This stuff is sticky, I couldn’t remember how people were decanting it so I got 2 tablespoons out of the kitchen drawer and spooned half the tin into the DFF. Stuck it at 130° and dunked a chain in for a few minutes and closed the lid, absolutely stinks compared to MSW.

First chain I just put in the basket, made it a bit tricky to get it out, so used some paper towels to grab it and wipe it down. 2nd chain I used my swisher (bit of coat hanger) from the MSW, which made it easier to get the chain out to wipe down.

Looking forward to trying it out this weekend.

I returned the WTB Sendero and Resolute combo due to leaky sidewalls, I was using Stans. They were a pain to seat too. Bought less gnarly Hutchinson Touaregs instead which seated easily and are still inflated with no leaking.

So now I’ve destroyed my slow cooker, can anyone definitively recommend a fryer over a new slow cooker for putoline?

It’s not messy, if you’re referring to the splashes on the side of the pot, that’s just from me swishing the chain around. I’d say that wax has probably done about 25 chain dunks so far and I don’t intend on throwing that away either.

In terms of how long it lasts on a chain, in dry conditions 3 or 4 long road rides (so ~400km). In horrible winter, wet road conditions, 1 ride, maybe 2. I went for a road ride on Saturday and it was relatively dry conditions but with some very wet and muddy patches, I took the chain off when I got home and cleaned the bike, thinking I’d have to put another chain on, but actually twisting the chain it felt like there was still wax in the rollers so it will go back on for another ride or 2.

I hoped MSW would be my permanent solution to chain lube, but it just doesn’t last long enough in the wet of winter. So going to try putoline next.

Thought this evening was the perfect time to boil the MSW off my chains and get the block of MSW out of the slow cooker ready for putoline. Didn’t quite go to plan but at least I have a nice block of MSW. Now I have to buy a new slow cooker or deep fat fryer, I could have just left the MSW in this one ffs.

Yeah the pads do sit really close. I’ve managed to get the alignment just right, wheels were spinning freely. I went for a ride yesterday morning and they performed well. But when I got back noticed one pad slightly touching the rotor front and rear. Maybe the rotor is not perfectly centered?

Just took the plunge and ordered a tin of putoline. I’m currently using molten speed wax on my mtb and road bike. I have 4 chains in rotation on my road bike and it’s been a bit of a faff this winter, since MSW doesn’t seem to last more than a couple of rides on a chain and often I’m left with a rusty cassette and chain links after wet/damp rides.

I’ll just put the chains in boiling water to clean them and then replace the MSW in my slow cooker with the putoline.

Do many others use putoline on their road bikes? Get any rust, or just wipe down with a GT85 rag?

Can anyone confirm if the rear flat mount caliper will also fit the front with an adaptor or do I need the front and rear specific calipers?

Yeah you need specific front and rear.

I’ve just fitted rx4s on my bike and having a nightmare with “lazy” pistons, where one side comes out more than the other, meaning the rotor gets pushed. I tried lubricating the pistons and pushing them in and out a bit so I’ll see how that goes at the weekend.

Resolute and Sendero fitted to my Genesis Day One, wheel rebuilt to 27.5 just last week, so I’ve never ridden this size wheel before.

Despite knowing the widths of the tyres, I was expecting them to be much more voluminous/bulbous. For example my 700c gravel king slicks are fat and round, these just seem skinny, but I’ll see how they go in the mud.

Loads of clearance on the frame and forks for slightly wider tyres in the future.

That cassette looks enormous! Thanks, I’ve just pulled the trigger on SG2 Sendero and Resolute. I don’t think my Genesis Day One would comfortably fit the 47c Sendero on the rear anyway. I really hate tyre shopping, glad that’s over with.

@rOcKeTdOg how are you getting on with that combo, I’m thinking of doing the same thing for winter slop, but the sg2 versions. Is there a big difference in diameter between sendero and resolute, since I think the sendero is “road plus” but the resolute isn’t?

Cheers @b33k34 that’s a good read. I completely agree with it that to use 160mm rotors with Shimano calipers you should use an adapter since the Shimano calipers are for 140mm rotors. However, the Hope flat-mount calipers are 160 only, and it appears the offset required for standard rear mounts is built into the caliper.

I could be completely wrong about this.

Interesting @carlos, just concerned moving further away from the axle, the pads may not make full contact with the rotor. I’ve emailed hope about it I’ll see what they say and update here.

This is flat mount, 160 only

Thanks @b33k34, but I don’t think there’s any post mount involved here, unless I’m missing something.

I found these black metal 5mm spacers that came with the frame, that my frame builder assured me are for the forks, but seem to be the perfect size. Just need to hack saw hope’s bolts down now!

Are these spacers a bit janky?

Considering I was running 140mm rotors with Ultegra calipers previously, and if the adapter is effectively built into the RX4 flat mount, so that it’s only compatible with 160mm rotors, I don’t understand why it doesn’t fit. It’s a custom frame, maybe the mount wasn’t positioned correctly?

I’m thinking if I add an adapter, it might take it too far in the opposite direction.

    ductions

although Hope state 160mm rotors only for that caliper so I presumed they’d effectively built an adaptor into it but clearly not

Yeah it looks like the caliper is designed to compensate for the larger rotor, but it’s just a little bit off.

What happened ductions is that they’ve now got matching build kits.

Hmm, you mean they offer it as a complete bike too? They did last year as well. I don’t understand how they can justify the massive price increase over the year for the frame alone. Wouldn’t you rather buy a Cotic frame or something for that kinda money?

£700 for the scandal frame? Wasn’t it about £200 this time last year, what happened?

I did a 45km ride 2 days ago taking me to about 470km all outside. I thought I’d finish it off that evening after work and did “Qatch quest” on Zwift to take me over the line. First time I’ve climbed Alpe du Zwift, and it was probably a bad idea in hindsight. Did 70 minutes up it, not bad for my first attempt, off the back of 500km in 6 days.

Hi Simon, I know it’s only been a week or so but how are you getting on with the frame? I’m thinking of getting an airwolf rigid 29er, non boost with pf30, as I have some bits laying around.

How long did it take it arrive? It certainly looks good in gloss. Are there decals on the frame or is it just a reflection? If so can you remove them?

I had a fleeting idea to dip the hub in MSW… I think that would end badly.

I serviced it just a few weeks ago, tried using grease instead of the ATF bath method, in an attempt at preventing the rotor and nicely waxed chain getting coated in ATF.

I’m using molten speed wax on my hardtail and my Genesis Day One with Alfine 8. On the mountain bike it’s super smooth and quiet. I’m yet to ride that bike in wet conditions, however I have a bikepacking trip planned in August and I’m a bit nervous about running MSW – definitely need a test wet ride. Bit of a dilemma really, do I take some Squirt to top the MSW if the weather is bad? Or do I just sack it off and go back to traditional wet lube?

On the Genesis, the chain seems to be a bit squeaky, but the Alfine hub is so damn loud it’s hard to tell where it’s coming from.

And yes I do quite enjoy the waxing process!

I just rode my Solaris max in red dwarf today, after waiting for some parts for a few months. When I bought it I was in two minds about the colour, but in person it’s fantastic, it’s like an orangey-red colour in the sunshine. Photos on cotics website don’t do it justice, I’m very glad I chose this colour now!

Thanks for the suggestions, I’ve started making a rough itinerary.

We got here today and starting to realise I’ve been to lots of places before! Drove down winnet’s pass which I’ve ridden up before, never realised it was next to Castleton.

I’ve been to Arkwrights mill with my dad a few years ago and we’ve actually arranged to meet at the Scarthin bookshop cafe this week.

I’m determined to drag my other half round some bike shops.

Any idea why the XL bootzipper is so much more expensive that the other sizes? More metal?! Was so tempted to pull the trigger until I saw the price. 189cm tall so I think XL is my size anyway.

Nope, not BB30, it’s threaded as you say. Not sure where your confusion came from! It has a threaded Hope 30mm (inner diameter) BB installed.

I could look at Shimano chainsets, I’ll have a right mix of SRAM/Shimano though! Running XT brakes.

I had the same issue getting my SRAM 1×11 chainset (previous generation) off my bike. Could not undo the drive side with an 8mm hex, so I had to precariously position the bike frame so that I could use my body weight to undo it. Like others have said it sounded a bit like a gunshot when it finally budged. So I don’t think this is exclusive to DUB.

I’m after a new chainset for my SolarisMax which I already spec’d with a 30mm Hope BB. Was thinking of getting a SRAM SX Dub chainset for about £50 and the Hope DUB conversion kit.

Or spend even more money on the GX groupset (and still buy the Hope adapter).

Or either of those options, but switch to a DUB BB (and buy the BB tool), sell the Hope BB.

Unless there are better Boost 30mm chainsets that anyone could recommend under £100?

Sorry to hijack but I’m also going to the peaks with my wife mid Feb and it saves me opening a new thread.

We’re staying in Foolow for a few days and I was hoping to find some nice easy trails for us both, and maybe some longer ones for myself. I’ve tried creating some routes from Foolow on trail forks and komoot but I’ve not really done very well. Is it better just to look at bridle ways on an OS map?
