I got some esi copies off eBay to try for a couple of quid, so far so good.. search for “silicone bike grips” and order by cheapest.

Checked all of the above, chain is the correct length, freehub spinning freely when the wheel is fitted and fully tightened in the frame but with no chain on, torqued up the derailleur clutch.  I’m thinking I’ll regrease it all again put it back together one final time and run it for a while to see what happens, other than that I’ll go to a bike shop and try the same thing in a new bike and if that’s the same so be it, if not I’ll replace the chain, cassette, chainring, jockeys.

Maybe my expectations of 12 speed performing better than 10 or 11 are a just bit misplaced.

I’m planning to check the torque on the rear mech later tonight and check for play in the derailleur mount when on the smallest sprocket….

I’m still scratching my head over the inertia thing as I have a 10+42 1x 12 on a gravel bike that’s fine, I wonder if I can try that wheel…

Noeffsgiven – I did take the derailleur off and check that little b-screw tab was correctly oriented, and it was,  I also recently stripped and serviced the derailleur completely so it’s silky smooth and clean as a whistle.

Interesting point on the large cassette inertia, that seems like a design flaw as this issue/chain suck in general  increases the risk of the chain being pulled off the sprockets and.on the bottom one jamming between the frame and cassette.

That’s a good point and something I haven’t tried. I’ll measure the chain this evening and try that also.

    Thanks for the responses!

It’s a hard tail so no worn Sus bits.

No play in the wheel bearings at all.ajd they’re not fitted too tight.

New freehub does exactly the same thing so I’ve ruled that out.

I’ll definitely measure the chain later using the Shimano method though it’s the one that came with the bike so I’d assume it’s correct.

I’ve stripped cleaned and regressed the whole thing so it’s totally clean including the chain, cassette, and i don’t think it’s cassette inertia as I wouldn’t expect that.

I don’t have another 12 speed boost wheel to try or get would be doing that next to rule the wheel out.

It’s a syncros hub (formula) with an FH904 freehub, which is brand new OEM from syncros themselves (I bought the full rear hub service kit). Spins totally freely,. Spinning the wheel it just keeps going with the freehub clicking away nicely with no rumbles or roughness in the bearings at all.

I bought the new freehub as I tried changing the old freehub cartridge bearings and still having the same issue.

It’s got me totally beat other than charging everything in the drivetrain as the next step!

Apparently 8100’s use the same pads as 785’s, and it turns out I had 4 pairs of race matrix in an envelope in my old spares box with 785 written on it….

Should have specified – mostly dry to damp cross country, nothing dangerous or dirty.

I’d say shoo-goo will do the job, it’s pretty strong and flexible. You can also get proper seam glue for goretex jackets though I’ve never used that.

This is interesting – I use virgin mobile 4g and it’s been terrible for about 3-4 weeks. I was hoping it was a local blip and would correct itself but this article has me believing otherwise. Hmmmmm….

Works well, iirc you get so many free translations and you can translate dynamically using the API or statically and drop the content into a resource file.
How you implement the translation on your site depends on the site and coding language.

Infinite route to be honest depending where you want to start and what terrain you want to include.
Rosedale railway route is a cracker, you could start at Great ayton or guisborough and take in captain cooks, kildale, ingleby incline, Rosedale railway, Rosedale chimney, Danby, Whitby, cinder track to Scarborough, or so a coastal based route.
Loads of MTB tracks, loads of gravel type riding.

Have a look on sportpursuit, they always have lots of well reduced waterproofs, easy enough to order a few and send back what you don’t want.

I picked up and binned quite a large collection of discarded dog poo bags while walking on the NY moors yesterday, I was most impressed by the one with used toilet paper sticking out – that’s one very flexible and clever f’ing dog!

Both bikes have a small seat pack with
    Standard puncture kit
    Tubeless repair kit
    Chain tool + links
    Gear cable
    Allen keys
Spare tube strapped to top tube
    Pump clipped to bottle cage
    Phone
Cash + snacks on bigger rides

This means they’re always ready to go with minimum faff.

I’ve had no issues with my Xiaomi phones, also check out the Poco X3 and M3 as Poco was a sub brand of Xiaomi but is now a standalone spinoff, though still uses the same OS and miui (for now at least).
Motorola G’s will offer an experience much closer to “stock” android with very few UI mods and very little bloatware. There are some good deals on G9 play, Vodafone are doing it for £130 including a £10 top-up and after a month they’ll unlock it free for any network.

The realme 7 and 7i were well regarded budget phones but hard to source.
    https://www.techradar.com/uk/reviews/realme-7-review

Some of the cheaper brands/models are built for the Indian or Chinese markets where the buyers are a bit more tech and price savvy than the western consumer; I’ve been using various cheap eastern phones a long time now with no issue and less worry of trashing a £150 phone, however, the 5g models are still a bit expensive so I’m sticking with 4g for the next 12 months while the UK rollout happens and I’m WFH anyway.

I love that picture, it reminds me so much of my favourite part of the NY moors (looking from great Broughton to Carlton), and the fact you can define time and life in a 3-point sign post.

Ah that’s good to know, thanks!
I’ve got a plan that when the tyre is ready to be replaced I’ll top it up and take a screwdriver to it just to see how good it actually is.

By residue I mean future seepage from the places that have sealed, if that makes sense?

    duckers

I’ve been using magic milk for a while now and it seems ok – cheapish, doesn’t dry out too quickly, seems to seal ok as I’ve pulled a few large thorns out and there are other spots of latex in the outside occasionally. I’ve also fixed one larger puncture with a bacon strip plug and it’s holding air fine.
Two questions – there always seems to be some residue on the outside of the tyre where it’s sealed, is this normal?
Also, do we consider plugs a permanent or temp fix? I thought maybe stick some shoe goo on the outside of it to make it a bit more solid?

I find these types of patches are the best as they seem to stick much better and can be cut to fit… + Fill the hole and surrounding area from the outside with something like shoogoo or whatever you have once the patch inside has cured properly.

I bought a used boardman SLS disk a few years ago for practically nothing and it was an amazing bike – fast, stiff (a bit harsh in fact!), and I also sold it for nothing a few years later.
Moral of the story – great bike, great price (not as cheap as they used to be), probably won’t hold its value, eBay them and check out sale prices so you don’t lose a massive lump just in case you don’t like it or fancy something else sooner rather than later.

Sounds like my gear changes are not as delicate as I delicate and as I thought if I’m going through cables that frequently – although a years riding is anywhere between 2,000 and 6,000 miles though…

I just change them when they snap or suspect they’re frayed, maybe once a year max. The outers are full length from shifter to derailleur so not really possible to re-lube after fitting?

Hmmmm this is interesting stuff, I’ve just swapped the pads in my SRAM Force 1 for racematrix and the back are squeezing like a pig in a slaughter house on long hard descents. I’ve had no trouble using them on Shimano brakes at all for years but I’m going to check the pad spring now….

Yes, You can replace that bit and IMO XTR is too good to be dumping over something so trivial, so it could be worth putting a wtd add for an old SPD or for that bit only and the retention strength screw. Actually I might have a a pair of broken 540’s I could post you a plate off if you like, drop me a message if so. If not I may be interested in them for the right price :-)

And also yes, IIRC the hardest bit is getting the spring, that plate, and the retainer screw back together – It’s not impossible and I used a strong screwdriver between the spring and that plate to lever the plate into position and get the retention screw back in.
