Update from Queens: area surrounding us is pretty much fine, high winds, but nothing more than a bad autumn UK storm. I suppose the main difference is the sustained nature of the high winds, been going on for about 8 hrs now. Low lying coastal areas are **** though.

It’s getting mighty windy here in Queens – nothing too bad yet a few branches down here and there.

Went out on Patrol this morning, a few shops still open, some power-walkers and the occasional taxi.

I think the real problems are going to be water-related, right on the coast, low-lying NJ and Long Island communities.

Please see crap video from recce.

Will update STWers as the thing progresses.

Only benefit I can see is blanket coverage of storm means no election shite on TV.

Got Shimano Deore from Rosebikes for 70 quid last year and they’ve been flawless, ime truly fit and forget.

Used hope/avid/formula before and was always having to adjust/fix something or other.

Lovely, thanks for the quick response – I was just concerned that the diameter of the dropout wouldn’t be sufficient to fit a 10mm axle. Ta

I agree, though only use one on the back, tubeless on stan’s crest. Well grippy and roll not too badly.

It’s like, how much more black could this be? and the answer is none. None more black.

    That’s very nice indeed.

Am I right in thinking that the setup you have would be perfect for snow?

Note to self, don’t use that 2l tesco plastic milk carton again. 40 psi and BANG!

I’m wondering whether the cage would offer any discernible difference when it comes to comfort and foot-spread.

I’m in Liverpool, and I’m an Evertonian – next season will be the one where we’ll either all explodes or finish in the top 4.

Loads of biking around, some clubs, Dolan for road, Woolybacks for MTB, ect.

I commute every day and do see a fair few, but nothing like some other cities Edinburgh/Bristol/Londinium. Bike lanes are few and far between, there is the Loop line, though I wouldn’t go on that after dark!

Liverpool isn’t half as bad as people make out, if you do get attacked at least you might hear a joke or two during the melee.

Why the BBC insist in just interviewing the riders and not the horses is beyond me. They should at least be given a medal.

Look ok to me, however they seem to have forgotten to install brakes.

In case anyone’s interested I’ve located the source of my grinding/vibrating drivetrain problem. A very worn rear cog.

Was working ok-ish prior to putting on a new chain and adjusting chainline, must have put the cog back on the other way round – causing all manner of noises.

So, now got a Shimano HG-53 chain with 44t Middleburn std chainring and superstar 18t rear cog, it’s now almost silent and smooth.

Am I right in thinking that the Kaffenback shares the same geometry and tubes as the Pompino? And that the only difference is the ability to run gears on the Kback?

My Pompino has taken on many forms over the years, it’s extremely versatile – and comfortable, however I can’t help feeling that it feels kind of sluggish at times, although I’ve nothing to compare it to as I’ve never ridden any other type of ‘road’ bike before, and to be honest it’s more likely to be my lack of fitness.

In my experience having the chain line dead on is vital for non slippage, maybe invest in some narrow spacers from velosolo or the like. Good luck

bristolbiker, are they 23 or 25 gp4000s? interested to know what the difference would be.

I use gp4000s 25mm on planet x model c wheelies. The roll nicely, however I can’t help feeling that they squirm all over the place – I pump them up to 110-115, but they still seem to move around. Maybe its the narrow rims, I may try 23s next time.

You can get Vittoria zaffiro pros for about 11 quid, not used them but must be worth a punt.

Just wondering where my pompino would fit in on the road bike steel qualityspectrum. I imagine 4130 is somewhere in the middle, it’s butted according to the blurb. However when it comes to the ‘ping’ test using the fingernail it sounds nice on the downtube.

Sam2391 – I ended up just taking the wheel into my LBS, I didn’t feel confident changing the bearings myself, I could see things going horribly wrong and the whole thing becoming an expensive mess.

I did do a bit of research though, it seems that unless you’re able to manually pull the bearings out with your fingers, or drift the bearings out using a screwdriver (by tapping gently around the edges so that it slowly comes out – the only other option would be to use a specific bearing drifting tool. I found a youtube video shows the different methods.

Mmmmmm….. might not be worth all the hassle. I really don’t fancy a downhill blowout in traffic at 30 mph.

Alternatively I’ve heard good things about the ride quality of Velocity A23s, 426g and nice and wide, maybe I’ll get them built up to the hubs off the model Cs and use some nice 25mm tyres.

Parents are from the same town on the Wirral.

Grandparents from West Derby, Wirral and Norfolk.

GG from Dublin, Mannheim, Lancashire and Norfolk. Further back from that is unknown.

I’ve been SS for years now and an scared of going back to gears. I’ve never had a geared road bike though.

If the Cannondale was fast, light and comfortable then I think I’d go for it, it’d be used for commuting and longer rides at the weekends. I’d also SS it.

Monksie – how’s that cannondale? I’m thinking of getting one on cycle to work.
