Yes, it’s horrible – after using Ubuntu for a three years it made me look around at other distros. Now I’m using KDE with opensuse, had to swap the system fonts which were a bit yukky but now please I’ve done it.

“Phoney” pedestrian phases at traffic signals are quite common – pressing the button doesn’t speed anything up for you if you are walking.

The worst thing is the bogus argument that is engaged – “if we cause queueing then cars will jump lights and that will cause a road safety issue”. Then if you say pedestrians won’t use it properly if they have to wait too long, the engineer will say they should obey the lights ….

There is a solution which is to have single-stage pedestrian crossing and install a red-light violation camera at the site – according to this there’s one of these cameras in Foregate Street Worcester for example. That will prevent the problem arising.

But going by the arrogant, dismissive response you received, I’d guess you will need to mount a campaign and have support from other people.

That’s an interesting explanation. I thought the construction (3mm-to-dust on type 1?) would be reagrded as an unbound construction, not impervious. When we used to lay them, the limestone ones anyway, we’d actually water the top layer to re-attach the lime that was unattached from the quarry. Ie the water would help it to harden very quickly.

just finished a similar thing myself with an early 80’s frame. It did not accommodate the recessed allen bolts for modern brakes and the collar on the steerer is of just a slightly greater diameter than more modern bikes (so I kept the old headset after going cross-eyed trying to fit my 105 crown race!)

    north of the border (Watford)

I grew up in Brixton and was always taught that the border was the River Thames. Now I’m not sure you’re authentic.

Sorry if this has been posted before, I don’t make it through most of the helmet threads.

I think this TRL research is pretty even-handed and thorough. If you’ve got time to read it, it’s free but you have to login. It’s “in favour” of helmets.

I read a few things after reading a thread here a few months ago that had some thoughtful posts by LHS amongst others.

From what I can gather, there’s still a a good deal of research being undertaken about the long-term impact of ‘minor’ concussion – the type that a cycle helmet might prevent.

Seeing all the wrongly-sized, ill-adjusted helmets being worn by children I wonder to what extent they are actually protected.

I think there’s a whole area of promoting parental responsibility here rather than compulsion. Cycle more often and wear helmet!

Don’t press one of those cappuccino frothers against your nose to see what it feels like.

On your first choice you are much more likely to pick a goat. Therefore conclude that you have. So when they show where the other goat is, it’s much more likely that the car is behind the remaining unopened door.

    Easy!

What I don’t understand is this: in the last episode of Star Trek Voyager, which I only watched last week, Voyager is heading towards the exit of the transwarp hub but is being chased by a Borg sphere. Voyager’s shields are down and Tuvok says ‘the only exit is back the way we came’. Cut to next scene, the sphere exits the hub near earth and is blown up by other starships, and after that out comes Voyager! WTF?

    Hi

I use a Hope Vision 1 for my country lanes commuting, I’m very pleased with it. It has flashing/low/med/high settings and I have yet to bother with high. Takes 4AA batteries so it’s not too much of a pain to take some spares. More of a narrow beam than a flood which is great for potholes on roads (useless for twisty bridleways though)

    Hi

if you made it as far as Leatherhead then you’d already made it as far as one of the branches Surrey Cycleway which is basically a 100-mile circular route with shortcuts and branches out to eg Epsom. It’s worth getting a leaflet or one of the Cycle Guides (though it looks as if a few are out of stock), the guides are good street maps in their own right.

I’ve cycled most of, but wouldn’t depend on the signs alone. It doesn’t shy away from the hills either!

It sounds like depression is a very distinct possibility. Any other changes to the way she behaves apart from how she relates to you?

If it’s that, your decision becomes different – whether you want to commit to supporting someone who is ill.

Think professional help – with no guaranteed outcome. You could visit your GP, by yourself if necessary, as a starting point.

    Good luck to you both.

I used to have one and quite liked it. Highpath Engineering[/url] make them. It’s worth reading his explanation of how they work – I don’t think he makes any extravagant claims.

I appreciated them most when lugging uphill: a sort of halfway house to a fixed gear; you still had a dead spot but got through it quicker! But wasn’t really ‘life-changing’ tbh.

I had a friend who was a cowboy and used to walk around completely wrapped in brown wrapping paper, although I haven’t seen him since he was jailed for rustling.

If you are thinking of 45 mins train travel then you could even start thinking of places such as Haslemere – countless bridleways on your doorstep and just a tiny bit less expensive than Dorking. Also, from villages such as Send you could have quite a nice ride into work along the Wey. Good luck anyway!

In addition to the above, you might want to start by casting your net even wider – a year and a bit ago we looked around a line between Guildford-Dorking-Reigate. Everywhere around there gives you access to the coutryside. But find somewhere to your specs I think you’re going to have to be prepared to be flexible on the location.

The javelin story is the first time a forum post has actually made me “LOL” – superb! Can I ask why the school let you take it home – were you going to practice in the park?

School keep clear markings are advisory unless they have been made mandatory using a Traffic Regulation Order. If the latter, then there should be a sign explaining the parking prohibition.

Even if advisory, the police could still arrest you for obstructing the highway – fine up to £1000 – although you'd be pretty unlucky to experience that in the school holidays!

If you have the time and inclination to look over a map, there are quite a few xc bridleway loops you can access, leaving and rejoining the Downs Link to connect them together without using the main road. That's how I use it.

As mentioned earlier, from Guildford station you can use the Wey towpath to reach it. But you don't need to turn off at Broadford Road as a couple of years ago the route was extended on the other side of the A281, including a bridge over the Navigation which you can access directly from the towpath.
