There are leaders and there are followers – some people prefer the followers.

No, there are no leaders without followers

Another vote for the Jurassic Coast, I would choose Lyme Regis – you can find fossils a few mins walk from the town, if you get the right time for the tide and good for a wander around.

Hexham I would also second, good for a couple of hours and cup of tea, we went there this year and then visited nearby Vindolanda by Hadrian’s wall, amazing to walk down the same streets on the same flagstones as people did 2,000 years ago.

In both cases reasonable weather helps!

If you go to London, IMHO it’s well worth doing one of the tourist bus rides.

At least that’s my idea of a good time…

TBH, I’m not sure I’d wait until Monday, especially if its causing you pain. NHS24

I second this strongly, especially if you have stiff joints.

Do some prep before the ride

Did similar a few years ago but without the prep – it does cloud the day from about mid-afternoon once you start being pre-occupied about whether or not you’ll find somewhere to stay and/or eat.

Before your trip, I would suggest compiling a list of places in the approximate areas where you think you might stop, then ringing to book early on the corresponding day of your ride, then you can be more carefree.

Have also booked places all in advance, but that takes away your choices and I think it’s a bit less enjoyable.

Brooess – Crystal Palace TV towers

Ah, that reminded me of somewhere I loved going:

My grandad lived behind the towers on Wells Park Road in that building which was council flats at the time. It’s an old railway station (can’t quite remember the name, think it may have been Upper Sydenham). There was a tunnel entrance right next to the building, fenced up, and every evening hundreds and hundreds of bats would fly out in the Sydenham sunset. I used to wonder if they picked up the TV from the towers as bats had radar and everything…

Been in a similar position, didn’t like it but took it. Not because of I felt any shame claiming benefit, not because I was grateful not to be living in a developing nation, not because I wanted to be a double-hard cycle commuter. It’s just I was told it’s always better to have a job on your CV than periods of no job at all. So it could be better for your long-run prospects.

    Good luck whatever you choose.

to be honest i have limited sympathy simply because if you can’t work on your own brakes you shouldn’t really be out there. What happends if you’re in a forest or on the side of a mountain and they fail ? you just hope for the best ?

I can understand people not being able to ‘face’ a frame. But to not be able to replace their own pads is just poor.

That’s irrelevant, isn’t it. The bike shop should be able to do the job they are paid for.

the words “fat” and “bike” should never even be used in the same sentence

THe King’s Speech – once they’d found out after 20 mins that they could cure his radio stutter by making him wear headphones, why did the film go on for another hour?

And I know for a fact that Deckard was NOT an android.

Two words I only ever see on this forum:
    1. Tosh
    2. Pish

They both seem full of impotent indignant suppressed rage – words you expect a bald man in a cardigan to use at a public meeting about the rubbish collection rota.

All this ‘training for something’ baffles me. If you are out on your bike, enjoying being in the moment, grateful to be experiencing the world around you, maybe catch yourself singing, then that’s the point.

I’ve lived in the area most of my life and these discussions about cyclists/motorcyclists/people coming in cars/day visitors in general have always been there.

I think it’s one of those strange things about the North Downs and Greensand Ridge. Excellent walks/rides so loads of trippers but locations catering for those trippers are far and few between – so the places that do provide something get really crowded, they always used to be called the ‘honeypot’ locations. The place does not really make the most of its tourist potential, could have more campsites for example.

“Peaslake 2004” comment haha – actually I remember it back in 2003 before all the newcomers moved in with their 4x4s – yep, everyone used to get around by bike back then.

I had an inbred 29er with slot dropouts, 160mm rotor. I did what you mentioned, tensioned the arm forward a bit, and that was all that was needed. Sorry no pic as I no longer have it.

is it any better in the stadium than it is on TV?

Yes! Went to the new Wembley for the first time last night and it is magnificent – very inspiring and a proper temple of football. £25 for a seat in the top tier. Well worth going at least once!

And, seeing the match was so completely once-sided as to have no actual football tension, the atmosphere was good.

I recommend getting a free Surrey Cycleway leaflet. It’s a long circular route that has links so you can make smaller circuits. It’s all signposted and I’ve really enjoyed the bits I’ve ridden (ie all of it).

For a while I had an 1980-ish frame for 27″ wheels with horizontal dropouts 126mm OLN, put 700c wheels in it, got some deep drop calipers (later had a 700c fork with shorter reach brakes). There was plenty of space for wider tyres on the back. No sloping top tube though!

So if you enjoy a good cheap bodge and aren’t trying to impress anyone, that’s one option.

I used to have one, been thinking about it again (not for off-road though!). If you get a reasonably heavy-duty one it doesn’t flap about. The nice things were that you stayed relatively unsweaty and it kept your trousers dry too, so you didn’t have to spend time swapping a complete set of clothes if going to work for example. On windy days it was harder in one direction but easier in the other! Saw these[/url] but have no idea how much they cost.

Thanks, I see what you mean about recovery – the commentators were also saying how tired the racers looked today.

Found average speeds here – don’t seem to have come down very much, “other things being equal”

I watched the interview with Jens Voigt saying how he was sure it was a ‘clean’ race this year. Assuming that to be true, is that showing up in slower average speeds or lack of outrageous attacks or something – logically it should, shouldn’t it?

    (Genuine question!)

England-France wasn’t boring for me, I was so expecting us to get a good tonking the tension was almost too much.

As it was, an impressive defensive display. I enjoy that aspect of a team a lot, whether it’s England or the great masters of Italy. I don’t why people think that somehow “isn’t proper football”.

I think I am the only person on this forum who has achieved the right balance between bike cost and skill.

I have a 10 year-old rigid bike (yes my only bike) and, whilst getting ready for a ride one morning last year I fell down the stairs and broke my ankle…

Shame this thread got so polarised and personal.

I can understand what SiB was saying in respect of drivers not understanding why cyclists may want to take the lane. They should understand, but they don’t. No-one’s told them about Cyclecraft* (read only by committed assertive cyclists?) or Bikeability. “Central government” moved the goalposts when they legitimized primary position etc – but they haven’t told the great driving public yet …..

But a problem with the Franklin view of the world is that effectively marginalises those who feel comfortable near the kerb – the shoppers and kids trundling along at 8mph – why shouldn’t they be able to do that?

    *yep I’ve read it.

Are you meant to have ‘sum Col A’ in the first formula – as this has nothing to do with your calculation?

It’s the column I’ve headed col A rather than the sheet col A, if that’s what you mean?
