Ok so the Bird is shorter on the front, longer chain stays? Bird more middle of the road?

What about trek stache? Where does that lie in this scheme of things?

    Thanks for the suggestions.
Can you describe what a “long front centre” means? I haven’t really understood that one.

    Thanks
Yes it was just stack I was concerned with so I can get the right frame size, ballpark hand position, and then use different stem or bars to adjust in more detail.
    Not worried about bb height
    Appreciate all the replies. Thanks!

    Cool thanks for tips..
Will think about it, maybe I'm going to make it too similar to my other bike with Kenda Small Block 8 on. Which wouldnt make sense. Might opt for something smoother.

Why? For riding roads, canal paths, gravel tracks. something nippy, that doesnt require an off road "mountain bike" tyre. Thought it'd be a good idea to have something narrower higher pressure… ?? just exploring the options, thanks for suggestions!

So Lock-on grips and regular slide on grips can just be trimmed? sounds simple.

Are "normal" length grips too long for gripshift normally, or is the length not really a problem…?

I want to replace my grips next to old gripshifters, and was wondering if a long grip is actually beneficial to prevent accidentally twisting the shifter? Have others found that is the case or not?

Great tyre, great in dry stuff, predictable slides when its loose n dusty. Brill on tarmac when pumped up high. When its wet they still work, except when particularly muddy.

Something via Bergen-Oslo train line might be good, can use the train to hop less interesting or less accessible sections east-to-west or west-to-east, maybe.

40K isnt an awful lot in Norway.
I earnt a bit less than that when I worked there for 4 years and paid 36% tax (which is a very normal tax rate there). You will pay a bit more. Your first 6 months of work are charged only 15% tax though, think that is still the case. Dunno about yuour PhD situation though, the institution will have that info for you.

Standard of living is high, but so is the cost of EVERYTHING so dont kid yourself, you wont be buying up luxury goods!

I found I learnt to spend less whimsically but bought what I needed and spent wisely on great quality stuff, especially cycling and skiing gear. You have to eat though so make it good food.

People have lots of nice stuff there cos they dont just mortgage houses, they have hefty loans for big cars and goodness what else you care to mention. money does go around there, but it doesnt come back at you!

Beautiful country and I'd recommend anyone to take a chance such as yours to live there. Nice folk, if conservative and over democratic, but they love a good old time.

    GO FOR IT!

maybe its not an accessible sport for many, but it sure is great to watch! I think skiing is great.

Maybe Ski Sunday should have a Summer alternative, ie. cycling.

Use fur, its dead. and keeps you warm.

Particularly if its a hand me down, use it, its recycling which is apparently a good habit.

    If you slide,
    DONT brake
DONT stamp your foot on the clutch.
    DONT touch the clutch!!

DO steer in the direction of the slide, little by little to encourage the car to regain traction forwardsm it doesnt take that much to get it back on straight. Dont over-do turning into a slide, or you'll just end up spinning the other way, which is even more dangerous.

DO ease off the accelerator, but dont come off it completely.
DO keep the engine turning with the accelerator so when/IF grip returns you move do actually go forwards.

REMEMBER your tyres are not good in the snow and ice (unless you have winter tyres) and that it takes very little to slide, eg turning slowly on a reverse camber can start a slide very easily even if you think you are being cautious.

HIGHER gears are better than low gears.

    LOW revs are better.

If you cant move off without spinning, use 2nd gear.

LEAVE lots of space between you and other cars, particularly if you suspect someone is being a bit to cavalier in their attitude to the snow and ice.

Its worth having a go at sliding on an empty safe corner or empty car park or something, if you get the chance. Just to see what its like when your car slides, eg once a heavy car starts to slide there may be a point of no return!!! and practice turning gently LITTLE BY LITTLE into the slide to feel the car try to right itself back to a straight drive.

OR DONT DRIVE, get the bus. or build igloos!

I trialled the Bose Wave while ago, wasnt impressed. I wasnt expecting it to be super hifi quality sound, and I'm not being "elitist", snobby or techy about it, it just didnt impress me. Sound seemed to lack a lot of presence, considering what they charge for them!

Price vs. sound. vs. convenience… not an easy balance.

In my opinion paying a lot for convenience is a waste, better of using a higher price to get a sound you are happier with.

Suppose its kind of about feeling welcome as cyclists or not.

When I do the "Scuse me" call to warn when i'm approaching, i'm probably knackered so it doesnt sound as polite as it's meant to sound. So i do have a bell, a wee ping or too hasnt raised any adverse reactions from walkers.

Though I'd agree that "pinging" your way along the trails does feel rude and presumptious, like pumping the car horn at every junction! But, the walkers dont seem to mind, bike bells have been around for years and years, older walkers maybe appreciate it because thats what they had "in their day"!

I suppose if I'm walking though, it doesnt matter, bell or a polite shout is better than flying past with no warning at all and catching you unawares.

Re. the forum rules, I have no problem with that, thanks for pointing out the rules. I wasn't looking for a method of removing ads. I was looking for ways of making firefox run better, to cope with the ads as my computer is jamming up on this website. I dont know how Flash works, I was curious if there are ways of making it run more economically for the sake of the CPU. I did not intend to bring to the fore a discussion on un-doing the good work of the website and the means by which it is funded, I do understand why ads are there. If I could earn money displaying advertising on me, maybe I could afford a new pc and not need to have asked in the first place!!

    Yup I need more RAM.
    end of discussion really.

Thanks for replies, apologies for confusion re steel whatever… mishap when making the original post.

I have a nondescript alu frame that works and I like riding but I would like to replace sometime in the future because it was second hand and am prepared for it to crack (I dont know its previous history, it looks a bit beat up) and also becuase its extremely rigid and would prefer something a bit comfier that'll last. Not doing any jumps or anything but normal XC type of riding, but would like something strong and comfy, hence I asked on steel and had for examples Inbred and Blue Pig that dont break the bank.

    Thanks

I like the Orange, Blue and Silver, striking and subtle class.
Not a fan of the RS spacer on the steerer, (the carbon look doesnt really suit the rest of the bike in my opinion).
All in all, its a well smart bike!! Quality.
