How is Brant coming along with his “damage limitation rear-end” design?

South to North. It would hardly seem like an achievement to “arrive” in Glasgow.

Anything is doable on a rigid geared bike. Front suspension might be appreciated for comfort and for bits like the Devils Staircase descent.

Some folk are doing it one (long) day, so 2 seems like it would be enough.

Google for the West Highland Way

    Luggage?

The most difficult riding will be the section up Lomondside after Rowardennan as this will definitely involve some carrying. The rest is mostly on good, made path.

You might want to skip some small sections across fields and the like and just use the road (e.g. from Kinghouse to the DS).

    >What about that 2nd softail you were putting together for me to have on long term loan?

But that cost £10,000. I thought I said already [;-)]

    Ah – but with 75% discount, I’m saving a whole £7,500. That’s a bargain!

I have a Topeak Super Tourist DX on my Ti hardtail. Clearance is huge, so I can’t imagine it being a problem on a 456.

I’ll see if I can find a pic for you.

I’d put discs on my roadie, if the products were available, no question. I don’t accept for a second the argument that road bikes don’t need them.

Bike design and uptake moves slowly, that’s just the way it is. And roadies are conservative types at heart. Until the hardware is available and of a decent spec then it’s difficult to make the shift. But it will happen.

LOL. Remind me again – which discipline of cycle sport banned skinsuits because they didn’t fit in with the “image” despite their performance advantage?

Kids, in general, need waaaaaay more sleep than ‘grown ups’ and it is usual to need less and less as you age.

    Sleep? What’s that?

I’ll second the request for a PM facility – I thought that was what this thread was about, and that we weren’t supposed to discuss that for a minute

A sticky about using the mailto: tag in the website address field would be a good start?

Here’s one to try if you have a radio-signal remote for your car.

Walk slowly away from the car, locking and unlocking it, until you’re just out of range.

Now take your mobile phone, and press it to your temple or forehead so that it’s parallel to the ground.

Now try locking or unlocking your car..

You should find that it starts working again. Seems the phone acts as some sort of radio amplifier???

How many more times do we have to see that picture druidh? I wish I had a quid for everytime I had seen it, could probably afford to buy you a proper road bike with the proceeds

    I have others. . . .

General forum question – you’re back up to 80% of previous traffic, but (AFAIK) there have been no forum slow-downs. Have you employed new super-fit hamsters, or are they now using Ti and Carbon wheels?

I suspect I’m more of a mountain biker than most of the so-called thrill-seekers who seem content to circulate the same bit of spruce monoculture.

But thing is, Druidh Your bike has drop bars, but is that Kona a proper road frame or a CX frame? XT on rear as well. Just some roadies would not qualify it as a 100% road bike.

But if I had a bike like a tourer/commuter with ability to put panniers wider tyres, than to stop all the extra weight I think I would like to have discs as well.

It also has a triple chainset – to most roadies, that’s also against the rules :-) But your thinking is the same as mine – added weight deserves better breaking. And for those that want to start on about “lack of modulation” / “disk brakes locking up too easily”, then I’d just suggest you’re a bit ham-fisted. You need the hands of a lover, not a fighter.

Yes, I didn’t need to bleed the first time but this time I think the line is too short.

Then you’ll need to fit a longer hose and bleed it anyway??

I’ve driven in Scotland for over 25 years, all through some serious winters and on various ungritted roads. I’ve never once considered “winter” tyres.

Nah – I disconnected the lever end. After fitting new olives and tightening them up, any small air bubble will be at the top of the brake pipe and will just pop out into the reservoir with a wee tap and a couple of squeezes of the lever.

If you’re careful, you’ll not need to bleed the brakes (I didn’t when I fitted brakes to an Inbred).
