Don't go for the Lezyne loaded pack! I've returned 2 after a week each because the zips have failed

    2 thoughts:

    1. either the battery is very flat, in which case leave it overnight

    2. or the USB port is misbehaving on the computer in which case reboot and then try again

If it still doesn't work it could be a combination of 1 & 2 in which case the reboot leave it in overnight

    I love 'em.

Got a set on my singlespeed and just put some on my geared road bike. Never felt comfortable on the drops and bullhorns are great for city riding, plus the brakes are always in reach. Comfortable for long rides too, I've done 100 mile rides with no problems (at least due to the bars :) )

I bought a single-speed road bike last year because I didn't want to ship my good bike to the States. As city commuter, in flat places like London or New York at least, it's ideal and has become my winter bike of choice.

I find I work harder on it than a geared bike Do Gears Cause Laziness? and it probably kept me fitter but for longer distances I prefer a geared bike.

How this translates to the mtb road I don't know….

Just the opposite, returned to mountain biking this year and will choose mtb over the road bike most days.

@TandemJeremy I paid closer to £700 for it! It's currently on at £699 at Evans – feeling my way here a little, what would you say a fair price for a 6 month old lightly used bike would be?

@redted where did you find the Shimano spec? MY google-fu is weak today

Found this on a google search

The gear ratios for the Alfine 11 are listed to be as follows:
    1 0.527
    2 0.681
    3 0.77
    4 0.878
    5 0.995
    6 1.134
    7 1.292
    8 1.462
    9 1.667
    10 1.888
    11 2.153

Don't know how accurate it is though

How does that compare to the 8 speed?

More beards and sandals on an audax :)

More seriously there's lots of information here: Yacf: What's an Audax?

The key difference is that a Sportive is more organised: signs, marshalls etc. wheeras an Audax has a greater emphasis on self reliance.

Is a rough Rockshox hierarchy: Reba, Recon, Tora, Dart? Or is it more complicated so that some Toras may be better than some Recons for example?

Just tried to buy the Rebas from Jenson myself but no stock :(

Thanks for the replies so far. I should have been a little more specific  What 29er suspension fork do folks recommend?

Think that they both are! Apple's price new is £193 so their refurb price is reasonable. The Amazon is a very good price. As far as I know there isn't an older 160GB iPod.

I may be selling my 2010 Rockhopper in the next couple of weeks if you're interested.

So does this mean that if I sit on my 29er, and on my daughters Islabike, which is probably only 14er (?), the contact patch will be the same size (given equal tyre widths and pressures)?

I feel a late night, slightly drunk experiment coming on……

Yes (also assuming that the Islabike weighed the same as your 29er). Tyre width is irrelevant in terms of the size of the contact patch but will affect the shape.

Specialized Rockhopper. Humble compared with most machines listed but my first suspension bike. Re-awakened an interest in offroading :-)

Unfortunately also inspiring me to get something 'better'

Depending on how your work laptop is locked you may not be able to install programs on a USB drive, you may only be able to store files on it.

Thanks b r. Just checked and I do no need to 'lose' the shifter windows (which I don't look at!). Is it possible to get covers for Deore shifters without the window?

It's about what I paid to have a road bike built up last year with my parts. They'd have done it for free if I'd bought the parts from them but they couldn't match the prices that I was getting from Ribble so I was still better off buying online and giving them a box and frame.

Rode a 29er for the first time last week, it just felt better, rolled more easily over the bumps and definitely faster. Nothing empirical though, just my gut feel.

Topeak Road Morphe, maybe not the smallest pump but gets up to pressure quickly and it has a gauge

For some reason certain riders will ignore you if you're not part of their 'tribe'. There's a roadie I pass from day to day (white team kit  ) On my mountain bike I gave a cheery good morning and was ignored. The next day on my road bike he responded.

    Go figure
