I use the method shown in the video to centralise my calipers so you should be fine.

Nice, hoping to get the Pugsley down to the beach this year.

But you could surely apply the same logic to suitcases and other bulky pieces of luggage.

Far better would have been to have done some capacity planning ahead of time, say before we actually bid for the Olympics to establish whether our infrastructure could cope. One by one the providers (TfL, TOCs) are putting their hands up and saying they’ll be unable to meet the demand. Instead the politicians got seduced by a vainglorious notion ignoring the practicality and affordability. The ‘Olympic Legacy’ will consist of some admittedly great sporting facilities accessible by only the people in the area of those facilities and huge debts.

And TfL are encouraging people to use alternative routes including cycling during the Olympics because the network won’t be able to cope.

    Joined up thinking?

I’d put the one with the best grip on at the front, which, other things being equal, will probably be the widest.

Worth spending some time in St Loius Obisbo too.

Probably too late but if you can drive from North to South your views are less obscured by cars and it’s easier to get in/out of the viewing areas

Does it still happen if you stand up and pedal? If so then you can eliminate seatpost/saddle related issues

Know nothing about Lefty’s but there’s a guy on mtbr.com, mendoncyclesmith who seems to be a bit of Lefty guru

Respect to the guy for doing this. I tried it one way last year and bailed after 14 hours

Think that you need something on it. Mine seized after a year, nothing serious than a light tap with a rubber mallet couldn’t sort but the grease that was there had dried up.

Just don’t get anything too heavy! I bought my 7 year old a gas pipe special from an online dealer which turned out to be heavier than my bikes! Seriously it was over 25lbs! He hardly rode it. Eventually the wife* noticed how heavy it was and asked if we could get something lighter. Got him an Islabike which we can’t get him off!

Alternatively you could buy the gas pipe special from me :)

*The same wife who said it’s not worth spending on an Islabike as he’ll grow out of it! I eventually won that argument but the expensive way!

I had keyhole in January, op at 10, home by 7. Took it easy for a week and was back on the bike in 4 weeks. My surgeon was a cyclist so understood the cycling implications.

I’m thinking of getting a set for my Peregrine which has an Alfine with Versa shifters.

On the 7s you can adjust both the inner and outer pads independently. On the 5s just the (I think) outer.

maybe this is a good time to ask…

    what are fat bikes for?

i rode one the other day briefly. it weighed about 17 tonnes, and wouldnt turn. like literally wouldnt turn.

    i dont get it.

    so… serious question:

    what are they for?

I think you could extend that question to all mountain bikes.

At the end of the day most people’s rides involve riding in circles, getting covered in mud, getting tired, maybe injured and breaking expensive parts. That’s essentially what I do on myfat bike. Pretty pointless really isn’t it?

But it’s fun! You just need to open your mind a little and accept that different people enjoy themselves in different ways.

    And I promised myself that I wouldn’t get involved…..

    34:18 for me.

If you go for a cheaper freewheel steer clear of the Dicta ones. Mine self destructed the first time that it got wet, after 80 miles!

If you’re not convinced look at Park Tools removal method – not for the mechanically sensitive.

My understanding was that all parts are replacable.

This video shows how to disassemble

It certainly looks as if you can change the cog separately

Think that it would work but:

    – your chainline would be a little off in one or maybe both of the gears depending how you set them up. I’m assuming you’re using a geared hub with spacers.

    – 18 to 19 isn’t that much of a gap so there might not be much benefit.

An alternative would be to fit say 42T and 40T chainrings up front and 18T and 20T at the back. Also would allow you to change gear on the road

The cycle parking at work is in the loading bay under the building, to go down there we have to be escorted by one of the facilities team in hi-viz because of the vehicles that may be manouvering. When I pointed out that if the drivers couldn’t see a cyclist then they had no right to be on the road let alone in out loading bay it didn’t go down well :)

Irony is we’re allowed to leave alone we just can’t go in by ourselves!

I think that I paid £120 3 years ago to have a bike built up from the frame and box of bits I brought in. Would have been free if they’d supplied the parts…

Perhaps the cable has stretched? Or the cable settled properly into the external part of the hub.

This is what I do for my Alfine 8 speed.

    1. Remove cable from hub.

    2. Set barrel adjuster on the lever to the middle of its range

    3. Measure how far the nut on the cable that engages with the hub is and ensure that it is the correct distance. From memory it’s 102mm on the 8 speed, but I cold be wrong and it’s probably different for the 11 speed but the same principle should apply.

    4. Adjust nut position if necessary.

    5. Re-engage nut and select the correct gear for aligning the dots (it’s 4th on the 8 speed, don’t know what it is on the 11). The dots should be pretty close if you’ve selected the right gear.

    6. Fine tune as required using the barrel adjuster

Citizen Chain on Brannan (?) have some lovely bikes, really friendly too. Was in there and they invited me to the Critical Mass that night. Even offered to lend me a bike for it.

    Not a groupset but…

Bought some BB7s from China a few weeks back. Half the price of Chainreaction etc.. Ariived in 2 1/2 weeks compared to their quote of 6.

No packaging or instructions but otherwise complete.

Try Moose in Tooting. Good people.

They are but they were pretty scathing about 29ers when I spoke to them so I don’t know what stock they’s have.

I bought my Swift from Head for the Hills in Dorking, they should be able to help you out

As above, although I wouldn’t go for a Surly cog, nice as they are until you know what ratio you want. I started at 32:16, flirted with 32:18 before settling on 34:18. Then you can buy he nice cogs, or even stump for a bling freewheel.

How slack is your chain? I work on being able to lift it 1/2-3/4″. Any more than that then tighten up your ebb
