Seems like you’ve decided but the Eagle Creek plus ourier bag combination works for me.

I’ve commuted for years on a singlespeed road bike and did my first century on one so I think they’re more versatile than others would have you believe :)

Yes, spacing the same. I like mine, no problems with it, or at least the only problems (like the one I’ll fix tonight) are due to my lack of ept!

I used mine on a hardtail with an EBB (it’s now on my road bike) so not a direct comparison but here’s my ha’pennyworth.

You probably can use on a full suss with a chain tensioner.

Again with a tensioner you could use your existing front rings but most people run them with a single ring because the large gaps between gears compared to a derailleur means the benefits are marginal. My Alfine 8 has a range of just over 300% (difference between top and bottom gears) which was equivalent to 27 of the 30 gears on my Shimano 105 road set. I’d imagine it’d be similar for a MTB setup.

@rickon this used to be the case but they now allow it subject to our carrier allowing it.

@Frankers tethering is using one device to connect to the Internet eg an iPhone, and then connecting another device, say an iPad to it to access the Internet.

Why would you want to be cured from the one true way? ;)

Did it last year, well organised event.

You should be fine on a hardtail, I did it on singlespeed, there’s a long flat stretch on the Downs Link in the middle where I suffered with a low gearing. It’s mainly gravelled paths with a few stretches of road and a couple of pieces of nice singletrack.

It may not be too bad, fit a longer stem and a layback post and you might have enough length. But ride it and see.

I’m OK, but thanks for the concern :)

Ended up rehanging a gate for my folks yesterday so didn’t make it out yesterday :(

Think I’ll give it time to dry out first ….

When I approached my LBS to build a frame I’d bought there were 2 options. They provide the parts at rrp and fit for free or I provide and they fit and I pay for labour. In the end they couldn’t match what I was getting my groupset for so I paid the labour

Yes try moving the brakes back to roughly where they were when you started.

It is as simple you suggest, unwrap the tape. I roll it up as I go and secure with some insulating tape. Move the brakes and retape.

Saw it in Smiths as well. If this isn’t enough to put you off:

The must-have guide for Urban cyclists – those who ride the city for the joy of it!

    Then how about this:

Get inside the scene – street riding from London to Los Angeles

Thanks, I’m actually at Goodworth Clatford and was on the bridleway West of the Longstock Road this morning, very rutted by MXers that in the ruts I was getting pedal strikes every stroke!

Is the bridleway to Wherwell the one that runs down the side of the golf club?

Yup he installed it wrong. Sounds like he installed it in the open position so that when he closed it it just tightened the cable more.

Don’t forget that you’ll have to pay tax on the rent you receive. That can make a dent in your income. You can offset items such as mortgage interest (but not capital) payments, wear and tear etc. though – check with an accountant rather than a random stranger on an mtb forum though!

Blah blah Olympics. Blah blah London. Maybe they should have a parliamentary debate about it?

You do realise the rest of the country don’t give a flying ****? We’re only paying for it. Suck it up and just think of that golden ‘legacy’

binners what makes you think us in London want it any more than you? Roads effectively closed, get off the tube and walk, all the development ‘benefits’ an hour away. Doesn’t do anything for me at all.

Bothy bikes in Aviemore have a demo pug, I’m avoiding it like the plague cos I dont want to know they’re as much fun as they look.

Don’t worry the Pugsley isn’t as much fun as it looks

I wish I’d listened to Mr Waits when he said “Never trust a man in a blue trench coat”. I didn’t and got shafted.

“noli illegitemi te carborundum” is always good advice as is “aut dure aut domum'”* which was mentioned upthread.

    * a motto’s no good if it’s not in an obscure, dead language. Which reminds of another good one: “latin’s an ancient language, as dead as dead can be. It killed the ancient Romans and now it’s killing me”

But my mantra is “It’s only impossible if you stop and think about it”

Great brakes! Got them on 2 of my bikes and the front of another. When my Julies need a service I may just replace them with another set of BB7s.

Make sure that before you torch his house with the flaming cat you wee in his shoes so that as he slips them on to escape he gets a nice warm, wet surprise.

No surprisingly easy in fact, that was my biggest surprise. For fun I commuted in on mine the other day:

A little slower than usual but more because the gearing I have is quite low (32:20) and I was spinning out at 13mph

Why the hell anyone uses Presta valves in the first place is beyond me.

As Paul D says. Drill it out. Although I can’t imagine it’s not already the right size anyway on a kids bike…..

What’s wrong with Presta? Work fine for me.

thanks for all your replies mmates! Can any kind soul enlighthen me.. Does wider tyres give you better “float” over all the mud, or does thinner tyres let you “cut” through all the mud, wet weather specifically?

Depends on the type of mud

If there’s a hard base underneath the thin tyres will cut through, on the other hand I’ve floated over mud on 4″ tyres that would have stopped me dead on thinner tyres.

Mine are 08 Toras and have never been serviced. As a basic coil fork I have never really considered it

Mine are the air model – does that mean they need a little more TLC?

Spend the money on a man’s fork. Sam does them for £70. In fact, didn’t your Swift come with a set…
Man up man. (Not literally though).

Actually got the rigid fork on at the moment and am strangely enjoying it….

If you like them, then spend as much time looking after them as you can/are prepared to.

might be worth do a service one year yourself and get in done by a shop the next to keep costs down.

Good advice – I think that’s what I’ll do. Next time round I should have a workshop so it’ll be easier

Nothing wrong with them at all, just felt it would be a good idea to have them serviced regularly.

Thanks for the link, the job doesn’t look too difficult but, as I said I don’t have a workshop space at the moment – hopefully in a couple of months once I move house! So I’m not looking to do it myself.
