Going off track doesn’t break the rules so long as you rejoin in the place you left it, and all under your own steam

Thought that would be the case

I’ll ask the wife when she’s finished cleaning :)

Youth Hostel at Wantage is only a couple of hundred yards off route if you need water. When you hit the A338, head North and it’s on the first junction on the left.

If heading East rather than retrace your steps take the track heading East directly opposite which takes you back to The Ridgeway – unless, of course, going off-route will break the rules! You can pick up that track on teh way West as well but it’s less obvious

Sorry, meant to add that I looked at cheaper alternatives, but none of them seemed to get consistently good reviews or lack a companion app.

Just been down a similar route for my (non-cycling) wife and in the end decided on a FitBit. What it doesn’t do is distance – but can estimate from the number of steps and estimated stride length. Will record heart rate, steps and on the app provides an estimate of calories etc..

But, I can’t see how, other than measuring effort, it will add much to being on a bike. But if she has an iPhone she could use a Strava or other app for distance/speed/elevation?

But playing Devil’s Advocate on the original question, how do you know that your calorie count isn’t the one that’s inaccurate? I see these devices as fine for comparing your own day to day effort, but not for comparing with someone else unless you both have the same devices

What’s she comparing the Strava calorie results with? Anything she gets will have its own model and inherent faults unless she uses a power meter

    Thanks all.

@Yak it happened because I’m a dumbass who doesn’t look what I’m doing

@aracer think I’d prefer the front to be going faster than the back. Got messy last time I tried it the other way

@Normal Man. My inner racing legend is a fairy tale

@Rusty Spanner. Mine have a big helpful arrow that I chose to ignore

In the end I remembered what happened. It was a real sod to get seated and when it finally did I realised that it was the wrong way round and left it. Couldn’t face that again so put on a spare wheel this afternoon. Unfortunately that’s the one with the single speed hub….

The front is similarly afflicted but I don’t have an excuse for that but when I switched it I found the sealant had dried out and my stock had gone off so cue a rush to the LBS at 520, mainly so they could laugh at me as well but also for some new sealant.

I use the threaded axle approach and use the old bearings to press the new ones in to avoid pressing on the seals

Thanks all, looks like I’ll go for one unless someone can recommend a slide hammer blind bearing puller set with a decent range of MTB bearing sizes for less than say £40?

Your wish :) I’ve got a similar set which is great for hubs and bottom bracket bearings.

If it’s in a bag then it is luggage
Luggage is not allowed in the bike stand carriage
Just squeeze it on and ignore the tuts

Think that you might struggle to get it into the luggage space in the carriages – they’re about 1m wide and deep and, whilst they’re the full height of the carriage they have a shelf at about waist height

I lived in New York for a year, probably a better place to cycle in than London. Just beware of the steel sheets they use to cover potholes when it’s wet.

But depends what you want to do, as a tourist id walk or use public transport. For fitness early morning laps of Central or Prospect Park are great although if the local clubs are having a race watch out as they take themselves a little to seriously.

Cheers drofluf, does it alter/improve performance?

Nothing empirical that I could back it up with except to say that it felt better.

Can someone (tazzy) tell me more about oval chainrings on an SS? I’ve ridden SS for a long time but never even considered oval rings

I’m not tazzy (I think, but I’m not sure) but I was really sceptical at first but found it really made a difference. Felt odd to begin with but soon felt natural.

It’s under warranty still I assume. Send it back.

What HJ lenses are you after?

Not sure! Until I went to find replacements I didn’t realise that there was so much choice! Do you have some spares? Or access to some?

I logged a support ticket with Wahoo.. A prompt reply back saying that its a known fault and will be fixed in the next software release.
    Nice work Wahoo..

That’s my experience with them too. An update of the Wahoo app broke something, I can’t remember what now, I logged it and they sent me instructions to download an old version until it was patched

What map were you trying to download? If it’s one of the pre-defined countries then you can just download it straight away, if you want a custom map you need to check “enable manual tile selection” when you select or deselect “tiles” (regions on the map) then the email box will appear

    Hope this helps

Depends on your skill level. For me a set of Blutos has given me more confidence, and that’s just for riding the Ridgeway

Definitely get some bearing pullers, used mine in anger for the first time yesterday and it made getting bottom bracket bearings out way easier (and less likely to cause damage) than a hammer

I’ve got the Wiggle one as well – one word of warning when using it: it doesn’t “break” when you reach the required torque like other ones I’ve used in the past. Instead there’s a very subtle give and then it carries on so it’s possible to overtighten if you don’t pay attention.

I’ve got an Open Pro rim on a disc hub and a Cotic Roadhog fork sitting idle that I may be persuaded to part with

    drofluf

Some years ago since I did mine but I had to drill the rims. I assume because the valve didn’t fit otherwise.

A “friend” used to ride the cheeky trails early in the morning or after dark I he rarely got hassle except from the occasional dog walker. Not very challenging but it was on the doorstep and not worth a special trip
