drofluf, photos are up on photos4all website.

Not up on Sussex Sport Photography website when I looked earlier. I imagine they were the bloke with all the flashes in the woods.

Got a link? Probably I’m being dumber than usual (which is most likely) but I can’t find them under events on photos4all.co.uk

lots of smiling faces this year!

Are they available to view anywhere?

Seemed to be lots more vocal encouragement from other riders for riding it solo – really helps!

And for those of us riding singlespeed – only saw one other! On my last lap, at about 730I put in a sprint from the 8 mile point. A real gent – thanks if you’re on here – heard my grunting behind him on one of the Singletrack sections and kindly pulled over. When he saw that I was on single singlespeed was really encouraging thanks again, that really lifted me! :)

Stayed dry but flippin’ cold! Trail improved as the event went on. Our first time so made some basic newbie mistakes: not taking changes of clothing, thinking we could stay warm in the catering tent overnight. Hoem now but still not warm!

But at the end of the day, or rather, night we had a great time.

Gave it a longer test at Dusk ’til Dawn. The second setting from the bottom was perfectly fine for there – fairly flat but twisty single track interspersed with fire roads and double track. Four laps in about 4 hours (yes I was that slow!) moved the battery gauge into the blue or middle segment so I’d think 8 hours realistic at that setting.

And hi to the guys I was briefly chatting to about the light and my stem captain!

I started with singlespeed as a stopgap until the Alfine 11 hubs arrived in the UK. THat was 2 years ago and I’m still on single speed.

When I first changed I could get up most stuff that I could on my geared bike. Now I still push the odd hill but am as faster if not faster than geared bikes. Real upside is the lack of maintenance compared to gears. Downside? on the flat or gentle descents I get left behind as I ‘spin out’ at about 16mph.

Give it a try! All you have to lose are your gears :)

Don’t let them worry you with all that, just remember that there’s nothing out there at night that’s not there in the day.

Just at night it’s awake and hungry

Used mine for the first time last night, first or second setting fine for going on the flat the flat or climbing. Full beam as much as I need for descending. Was comfortable descending at 35mph on a gravelly, potholed road, not much slower than my daytime speed.

Wasn’t out for long enough to check battery life, that will have to wait for Dusk ’til Dawn.

My only niggle is that as you cycle between the settings it goes off between highest and lowest. I’d prefer it to do something like cycle through with a single click and require a long click to turn it off. Other than that very happy so far.

All depends on who you ride with. If they are rocking daylight setups then you’ll need to too unless you want to be looking at your own shadow all the time.

    ^this

Was fine with my Lumicycle Halide plus Joystick combination until the guy behind me put his 1500 lumen on full and was riding in shadow. Got my Lumenator last week so I’ve upped the stakes a little

You need a Two Fish Bottle cage. Like a regular cage but uses a velcro strap to fit to your frame

Don’t know either tyre but any speed differences are more likely to be due to tread pattern, rubber compound and pressure than width. And of course as Gatorskins are known to be vulnerable to punctures (lights blue touch paper and runs away :)) if they have a speed gain it will be lost by time spent fixing flats :D

I’m using a Shimano 105 triple, which was fine, now just running the middle ring for an Alfine on the same cranks/bb

i like simple plain looking steel frames. no over design.

also, a frame that could use rigid or suspension forks

Singular Swift fits that bill perfectly

I’ll try to post one tomorrow as I’m at work today, but it’s roughly ‘fat wallet sized’ = 4″ x 4″ x 1.5″

Thanks – saves me posting to ask how I can use the light with Mary bars*!

*Where I want to put the light is on the sweep so it points out to one side

I got mine today. The head unit is nice and small and everything seems very well built. It’s certainly bright enough!

I managed to fit a Hope Universal Light Mount on it to attach it to the bars. It’s straight forward to do but you need a bolt that’s slightly longer than the original one supplied with the light and not as big a diameter as the one for the Hope mount. Luckily, I had some spare pins for my Nano Thru Pin pedals and that bolt was the perfect size. Yippee!

Is that like the one that comes with a Vision 1? Is it just a matter of unbolting the mount on the Lumenator and bolting on the Hope with a longer bolt?

Mines just arrived, on a ‘look directly in the beam test’ it gets a rating of “That was a pretty stupid thing to do” Better test when it gets dark!

I have no problem at all with road discs and would love to [ad probably will] have them.
But ….. given that Colnago have said that their disc braked C59’s stopping distance is 52% less than the rim braked model, I’d be a bit worried in group rides with that sort of disparity – if indeed it is an accurate figure.

Accepting that 52% for the moment (and I’m not sure that I believe it) I’d expect a similar variance between well set up and poorly adjusted rim brakes

Go fat, you won’t look back.

Some places you’ll be slower, others you’ll be slower, the rest the same. But you’ll have a bigger smile on your face.

The Chrome one works for me, can fit laptop, change of clothes, lock etc. in comfortably and it fits snugly to the back. The quick release on the strap is great and will give hours of amusement to your colleagues as they try to make your bag fall off whe walking into the office.

Very nice, I’d be tempted if the consequences of buying another bike weren’t quite so severe.

I trained as a navigator in the R.A.F. where we were taught navigation from the basics, the idea was to use the best (combination of most accurate and easiest to use) kit available but always be able to fall back on first principles as/when/if the kit failed. In training they progressively turned off the ‘good’ kit to make us less reliant on it.

I was able to put this to good use when sailing the North Sea and our Decca (pre-cursor to GPS for you youngsters :-)) failed and took a ‘running fix’. When the Decca came back online we were within 1/2 a mile of where the Decca put us which, given that I was using a hand bearing compass from a yacht and Decca in that area was accurate to +/- 1/4 mile wasn’t too bad.

Nowadays I use GPS so I can enjoy where I am without having to concentrate on the navigation but carry a map and compass as a fallback.

Why are they good? Why would I want one? How are they different?

I ride one because it makes my arse look smaller :D

Could it be horse riders? Was talking to a woman in the office who rides, she said they put them there, not to upset cyclists, but to make their ride more interesting, like a little jump or something

This method is dumb (and so is avid for suggesting it). It does not align the calipers properly for many reasons. Align them by eye and ear.

Why’s that? I’ve used the Avid method successfully on a number of bikes. Genuinely want to know if I could do it better.

One caliper size then different adaptors (spacers) according to rotor size. The Superstar website has a good page to help you choose the right adaptor.

Sorry but what is a ‘magic ratio’ …….!????

It’s a specific combination of chainring, sprocket and frame size (specifically chain stay length) that means you can run singlespeed without a tensioner.

Until, of course, your chain stretches :D

Because the ones on routes near me are filled with pedestrians and broken glass or poorly designed. Where they cross a side road the markings indicate that the cyclist has to give way to vehicles turning into that road whereas vehicles on the road rather than the parallel cycle lane have priority.
