Plenty of them, NYC’s a big place!

Sid’s Bike shop on E34th was my LBS when I lived there, Conrad’s on Tudor City Place always had nice stuff hanging up in the window but I never went in for some reason or another.

Midtown on W47th was quite eclectic in the stuff they had then other interesting ones were Gotham Bikes, Zen Bikes, C&M.

Anyone got a recommendations on really thick (to increase diameter) semi-slick MTB tyres?

Schwalbe Big Apples? I’ve got a set (in 700c) and really rate them, comfortable, reasonably fast rolling.

Edit: BTW there is now a shifter which attaches to your seatpost. Ideal for singlespeeders who don’t like cables dangling all over their bikes. (SLS30-P or HSJ993, 27.2mm post)

    :D 8O

But then it wouldn’t be singlespeed :D 8O

But I get what you mean

How far from sw london to these trails you speak of?

SW London’s a big place :) but I used to reckon 45 minutes drive from SW19

Good grief that was boring! I may have dozed off for a while around the middle, did we ever get to the bottom of the menacing saab driver?

No before we got to bottoms we got sidetracked into eating beaver.

Like steve_b77 says will depend on the width. I bought an Alfine on eBay with an Alex rim and it was quite a narrow rim, wouldn’t have been happy putting an MTB tyre on it. Not a problem for me as I just wanted the hub

    I am not a lawyer but…

Just to be clear you want to move the gate so that it opens on ‘his’ section of the path rather than ‘yours’ ?

I think that the piece that you quoted gives you access of his part of the path – although it seems that you have to carry your bike!

To be safe I’d get a lawyer’s view – whilst you and your neighbour may come to an amicable solution, things may change or he could move and the new neighbour may not be so forthcoming. Also conveyancing solicitors are getting more fussy these days so it may make things easier (and cheaper) when you come to sell if you have something formal in place.

The Ridgeway? Great views, not too technical and relatively uncrowded

I’m pleased with the wheel that Bike Zone built me at he end of last year. They’re on St Michael Street so pretty central

Have you found you are more attractive to women when riding the 29er?

He’ll need to singlespeed it as well for that to happen :D

Surely MTFU and ride it as is :) Seriously though, can’t you change the ratios to something more SS friendly?

Failing that I’d put an Alfine on it – I picked up a complete wheel and shifters on eBay for around £100 and you could either put the shifters on a bar extender or get a set of Versa shifters.

I run Alfine + Versa on my Peregrine and it’s a great combination. As the gaps between gears on an Alfine are quite large you could easily get away with the shifters on a bar extender and see how you get along?

The fairest way is to saw the bars in half so they each get a piece and remiburse both half their money

At last, a voice of reason!

Do it, put some Big Apples on my Peregrine in place of the 32mm tyres it had before and it transformed the ride. No slower but vastly more comfortable on what passes for roads round here.

Just tested it! Worked a treat!

Does anyone else think that the inboard pad adjuster is ridiculously stiff?

The silver bit in the centre will accept a Torx bit

Road BB7s are a bit susceptible to slack cable so make sure that you have as little cable flapping around as you can reasonably manage

I think he was probably recommending the surly one?

Anyway, i dont think there are any on the market that met you use the anti-turn washer with the tug, there was a post on MTBR that showed a simple modification of an on-one tug that looked the best solution…

    HERE

    Thanks!

Like unklehomered I bought several sets of pads form them in the expectation that they’d wear out quickly or self destruct but they haven’t they keep going and going. I mean do they really expect me to store stuff for them.

And the layback seatpost I bought from them is bent!!! I was hoping for something that would make me cooler and more laid back and what do I get? A kinky seatpost.

And don’t get me started about the prices. My wife can’t believe how little they charge and how much you get for your money. She keeps nagging me to get them to sell shoes and handbags. At least then I’d get a little peace

You’ll need to carry a spanner. More importantly, given that the spanner you carry will be shorter than the ones that you have in your workshop so make sure that you use the shorter spanner when fitting the wheel at home. You don’t want to tighten the nuts as hard as you can with a big spanner and then try to loosen them with a small one. DAHIKT :)

Just read this thread after posting about Bell Laps. The reason I like the flared drops is that they are more comfortable which lets me ride on the drops longer and go faster. More confidence for me lets me descend faster – even better!
I am sure if I had stuck with conventional road bars I would have got used to them eventually but frankly I like riding my bikes not adhering slavishly to the ‘rules’ . Equally you might think they’re rubbish.
Back to the OP – in my experience being comfortable on the bike is the single most important thing – ignore advice to ‘slam’ your stem for example (unless it makes you more comfortable of course).

    ^^This

Exactly what I found with flared bars (Midge Bars in my case). Ride what makes you feel comfortable, not what the ‘rules’ or fashion dictate. You’ll ride further, faster and have more fun. No downside.

Got Midge’s on my Peregrine. The only drop bar that I’ve got on with – although I’ve only tried various different flavours of ‘normal’ drops so not comparing with Woodchippers etc.. They’re obviously wider than regular drops – the first time that I saw a pair ‘in the wild’ the owner admitted they weren’t ideal for London commuting – but out of town the width is right for me. I find I’m spending most of the time on the drops whereas before I’d get uncomfortable after about 10-15 minutes or so. For descents they’re great, really confidence inspiring

Not a lot in London itself – although it depends where in South London you are :) Some cheeky stuff on Wimbledon Common, not worth a journey but when I lived there it was on my doorstep… A little further afield you have Swinley and the Surrey Hills

Squirt some decent grease into the ports once in a while and you’ll be fine
