The Ridgeway’s not far away, plenty of stuff off there

I’d be tempted if I needed one! But I’ve got a bullet cam that I rarely use.

Even if quality isn’t up to GoPro standard I’d guess that picture quality would be fine, your only concern would be longevity and robustness, But probably a good ‘starter kit’ to work out if you were interested in a video camera.

What njee said – I used to live round there and either Richmond Park or down to the Surrey Hills

Lots of great stuff off the Ridgeway, not the most technical perhaps. Just grab a map and plan a loop!

About 5 naked sunbathers on the beach today.

All male and all over 70.

The next naked septuagenarian that I see had better be my reflection!!!

Head for the Hills did one for me a couple of years ago. Really pleased with it, great guys to deal with.

It’s a few quid for a tin and it lasts ages. I bought my tin 4 years ago and still have half left and that’s for 5 saddles!

But rub the proofride into the leather – don’t forget to do underneath. Let it dry, buff it off and ride.

I run 34:18 but as njee20 says it’s an easier ratio than 33:16 so I’m not sure how I can help

In the spirit compromise how about greasing the drive side and leaving the non-drive side ungreased? Surely that would make everybody happy….

    @OCB

Thanks, so I guess a Peregrine, Gryphon and Swift would be overkill? :)

When I move my legs they help make the wheels turn, just like my XT ones did.

But I think that they look better

@OCB How does the Gryphon compare with the Peregrine in terms of handling and ride?

I’ve got the 2009 version* and it’s the best value bike I’ve owned! Did my first 100 mile ride on it.

*Technically it’s the Bikes Direct, Dawes SST but same frame, kit etc. but just a different paint job and half the price

Get the right adapter for your calliper. Trust me on this one, my rear ceased to function as soon as the unworn parts of the pads managed to meet above the rotor.

Moving the washers has brought the calliper sufficiently close I think!

Convex/concave washers should be between bolt head and caliper, not between adaptor and caliper.

Thanks – looks like that’s what my problem was.

Maybe I’m more deserving of your username than you are? :D

DogCam Bullet ~ £100. Resolution good enough to read number plates – given the reason that you want it that should be a key factor in making your choice. Apparently not all cheap cameras are good enough quality

Haven’t tried it myself but on the MTBR forum someone recommended using a swimming pool ‘noodle’ as a tyre liner.

I did it on a singlespeed and really suffered on the long flat Downs Link section. Only big climb (big=I had to walk”) was coming into Brighton

If VAG spaff (stop tittering at the back) is the same as Ford spaff, then it’s a lot more viscous, don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing though

Depending on the bike and conditions I find that the sweet spot is somewhere between 8 and 100psi.

    Hope this helps :)

Today i took in some nice Ridgeway and the hills before hitting the road section. Managed the commute in a good time of just about 1hr 15 which gave me a 15.91mph average… Nice….

Which bit of the Ridgeway are you on? When I’m working from home my pre-work ‘virtual commute’ sometimes takes me up there – Wantage area

I’d get it renewed, some countries insist on it being valid for at least six months. Also check what the airline that you’re using (assuming that you’re flying) says. If they have a similar policy they won’t even let you board whatever the rules of the country you’re flying to.

Don’t know the Goldtec hub but I wouldn’t expect a track hub to be well sealed so I think you’ve done well getting that long on it given how you’ve used it!

If you have to ask then you’re not tough enough :o

Seriously though if I can manage it then anyone can. Start with 32:16 unless you’re somewhere really flat or really hilly and take it from there.

I never thought about the chainline until I saw your post.

I’ve had Alfines on 3 different bikes and just fitted it with the parts that were already on the bike. Chainline looks OK, not perfect but no issues.

Running one 32:20 (MTB) and the other 46:20 (road)

    @clubber

Moved away from the area last summer and some of the emptiers were often very vocal about where you should and shouldn’t cycle. Fair enough as I was in the wrong, hence I tended to go out early of late when they weren’t about. The rangers are a little stricter than in your time as well even on the bigger paths. Again fair play as I shoudn’t have been there.

Even on the legitimate stuff the emptiers were not so friendly, walking 3 or 4 abreast across the path, dog on long lead across the path. Vast contrast to where I am now where they’re, without exception, very friendly, making space and keeping the dogs controlled.

Wimbledon common will be good for the cx bike

The legitimate stuff there is a bit limited: the gravel road that runs North-South, a path from Parkside, a track down to Kingston and that’s about it. Also gets very busy with walkers during the day. There’s some cheeky stuff there as well but best to go early before the dog emptiers arrive.

Like GHill and tonyd I’ve used REI with no problems.
