I’ve got a couple of the Rumpus 27.5+ wheelsets, they don’t feel particularly heavy when riding. Can be a really tight fit for some tyres though!

Spookily I was just reading this morning about this issue in a behavioural economics context.

@nickc, yup, that’s the situation (sorry, pic doesn’t appear to be showing) – it was running from RH lever in front of the headset, then round the back and out again to the front before going into the guide on the LH side of the crown. Never seen that before!

Another vote for great service and comms by Alpkit, lots of items bought over the years and all good. For bike kit they were very accommodating on sorting a dynamo hubbed Plus wheelset – and when they sent a SRAM driver rear wheel (no one’s fault, just a wrong assumption) they provided a replacement Shimano at no cost and said to keep the SRAM. Two wheel sets going strong after several years of use.

Something rigid and Plus may be a good option, the Ramen 3+ mentioned above being great value, as are Alpkit’s Frontier etc.

Personally I managed to bodge 650b+ into my Salsa 2011 El Mariach(ubb)i and I love it, albeit need to take care with clearance (Rocket Ron 2.8” fits, G-One 2.8” doesn’t…- both on Alpkit Rumpus 50mm rims). The 2016 El Mar frame doesn’t cope with a 2.8”.

For that reason I’m now building up a 2017 Fargo frame as it’s intended to take 650b+, 29er and 29+ options. So far, mid build, it looks great!

Haldon Forest has some built trails – light blue, dark blue, red and a short black add-on to the red. Dark blue is really good fun, the red is not a great deal harder and also fun.

Woodbury Common has some fun natural trails you can stitch together, plus some built ones tucked away.

If you want some smooth off road there’s a disused railway trail all the way from the centre of Exeter to Lyme Regis which is pleasant if the weather has soaked the trails.

marcus – useful summary of the causative mechanisms behind mains bursts in this recent UKWIR (UK Water Industry Research) 2017 report:

    (hope the link works…)

Suggest you might want to check out bottom of page 12, 3d+e on page 13 and 3.2.3 on page 18 which all point to it being changes in the temperature of the water conveyed and the resultant longitudinal contraction/expansion being an isssue at joints (for cast iron and to some extent ductile iron mains).

+1 for philjunior and martymac. Spookily I was just thinking of getting a new Giro helmet as they fit me very well. Mine are seriously old (so fall outside the current ownership, as with my venerable M.U.L.E.) and in need of replacing!

I’ve found that Bontrager and some Spesh also fit my head shape too so will be opting for them for the foreseeable. Osprey also front runner anyway as I think they’ve got the best packs these days.

Agree with ferrals’ observation, tend to bring my wheels and tyres indoors to warm up in winter, or leave in the sun in the summer before trying. Seems to help me anyway (and more pleasant!).

Likewise, flange – I’d hoped to do it this year, but the training isn’t happening for various reasons and it’s not something I’d undertake lightly / unless I felt I was prepared both physically and mentally.

I did 1,200km on the Camino de Santiago from Alicante to Santiago de Compostela last year (I stitched together 4 Caminos) with a good friend. We did it in 11 days, and even with company that was mentally very hard, so doing twice that distance each day, for twice as long, and (probably) on your own would be a great achievement.

Chapeau to the folks doing it, I’m envious!

A few years ago I had similar stock control headaches with them, to the point where I’d email them before ordering asking “is this item *really* in stock”? but then all went well. Shame if the glitch has resurfaced.

My Peugeot 307 diesel estate is a 1.6. It’s an ’06 plate, has just tripped 205k miles. Takes 3 bikes inside with front wheels only off, 3 people (driver and 2 passengers) and all their kit for a long weekend. but not a van! :-)

Remembering the 2008 experience and the tractoring of vehicles. We were the mob in the converted mobile library that managed to block the way in when the motor burned out

The guy who was driving just about managed to sort things before flaking out with the flu, so our quad went down from 4 to 3 before even starting. Then our uber fit team member got a spectacular stomach bug a few hours in. And then the other quad team member’s lights died. Impromptu quasi solo for me! :D

Great memories – peeing on the rear mech to unfreeze it: also realising the next morning that I had a huge haematoma on my ribs from interacting with a tree stump at speed. Loved it. Can’t imagine why I’ve not been back!

I’ve done the WotR twice and it’s a lovely route (I’ve done the Walney-Whitby and, just last week, the Hadrian’s Wall routes, and it’s the best of those IMO).

First time was with an unfit riding partner, carrying off-the-bike gear staying in BnBs, and the second time was with a group of mixed experience/ability with a support vehicle carrying kit.

Both were done over 3 days, and they all managed the ride fine. I’d’ve loved to do it in two days, it’s very doable. The toughest section for me was from Appletreewick through to Brimham Rocks.

After Ripon it’s nearasdammit flat so you’ll have got the hard work out of the way if you aim for there as your stop after doing Day 1.

One of these might help with your gear carrying?

Worth having a look at Ofcom’s summary of complaints performance for the telecoms providers here.

Some clear graphs to show relative performance for landline, broadband and contract mobile. Runs up to Q4 2013 so there’ll be one for Q1 of 2014 imminently.

3 seem to have pulled their socks up from a couple of years ago when their complaints rate was very high compared to others (and I can confirm they were truly awful).
