You could pick up a Canon S95 cheap (ish) now the S100 is out. Ticks all your boxes.
dr_deathFree MemberI’ve needed to have the volume on my Squeezebox Touch almost at max to get the same results as the TV/Bluray/Other stuff out of my amp, leaving that on the same volume setting.
So, no, not just you.
dr_deathFree MemberTBH as an A&E doc we rarely find these things useful.
Most of the time you are either so unwell/broken that we fix what is in front of us and worry about your past medical history at some later stage, or you are awake enough to tell us anything important.
If you are diabetic…. I will check the BM of every trauma patient that comes through the door so don’t worry.
If you need blood…. I can’t give it to you without sending a crossmatch sample to the lab so I don’t care what your blood group is, nor will me knowing alter the fact that I still have to send a sample to the lab.
If I need to find your next of kin…. I have the police for that. They are quite good at it. As long as we know your name, we’ll find someone. So, have something on you with your name (and date of birth if possible) with you and you’ll be fine.
dr_deathFree MemberGood spot Jon, I had just been wondering about this the other day. A mate has been picked to represent GBR at triathalon in his age group and was wondering about scientific training methods VO2 etc….
SBZ – what makes you say that??
dr_deathFree MemberAlso, you can buy them Network unlocked so you are not tied to 3
dr_deathFree MemberI still recall his end of year awards were Allanis Morrisette won ‘Shrieking Goat Faced Harridan of the Year’.
Still makes me smile now….
dr_deathFree MemberSeen these being talked about a bit… I’m sure Apple either helped fund it or (more likely) are umming and ahhing about buying the company.
dr_deathFree MemberCan take ages (months). The more you work at getting it going again, the quicker it gets better. Analgesia and physio might help with this….
(There are papers if you can be arsed to look, but this is the gist)dr_deathFree MemberI’ve found about half a dozen papers without even trying…. One of which is a meta-analysis of all the others so will have loads of references in its references….
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20818864
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21273279
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20924010
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21093974
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20951422 (the meta-analysis from the lancet)
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21879215
3/4 is just not really trying very hard!
dr_deathFree MemberMake sure it the correct little blue pills that you buy, otherwise you will be up all night!!
(Thankyouverymuch)
dr_deathFree MemberA screenshot from my home computer…. Not on the Uni network (still),
(Why does no-one on this place ever believe you….)
dr_deathFree Memberdepends which “Apple store for education” you log on to. There are three each one giving differing levels of discount. The top one you are only supposed to be able to log onto from your uni network…
dr_deathFree MemberWhy would I be bothered if a drunk person is a bit dehydrated? All rehydrating them would do is lessen their hangover, and that’s definitely not what I get paid for. The thought has always been that the quicker we can sober them up the quicker we can check them over for any other medical complaints and get them out of the department.
@Paul – not really as we are doing it on volunteers first. You have to come and sit in a room in my hospital and get drunk and then we measure your blood alcohol levels while you sober up. You then come back two weeks later, get equally as drunk but this time we give you two litres of IV fluid and then measure you blood alcohol levels while you sober up. Then we give you £50 of M&S vouchers. I don’t think we will find that it makes a clinical relevant difference, fun study to do though and should save the NHS a bit of cash. (Couldn’t get them to fund the **** thing though).
dr_deathFree Member@chrisdw – thats funny coz i’ve bought loads of apple stuff from home through the education store link and my home computer isn’t on the university network…. (to the best of my knowledge)
dr_deathFree Member@thepurist – http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22124355
Seems to try and answer your question. Not published yet so haven’t had chance to read the full thing…..
dr_deathFree Memberhttp://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8897392
Original paper (well the abstract) for those that are interested….
dr_deathFree MemberThey ever ask for much proof about whether you are a student or not to shop on the online apple store for education. You just need the special URL……
(email in profile 😉 )
dr_deathFree MemberOh, and p.s I am organising a study at the moment that I think will show that IV fluids has no effect on drunk peoples blood alcohol levels so shouldn’t be given. That’ll save us a bit of time and cash. I’ll let you know when I publish the results. You can all buy a copy of the journal….
dr_deathFree MemberWe sometimes put nasopharangeal airways in Paul…. Seems to have a very sobering effect.
Didn’t see him this afternoon Drac, I was on a 5-12 shift, hence I’m on here now (they don’t tend to let me meet people like that, I tend to ask awkward questions like ‘You know your health and social care bill is not supported by the majority of NHS workers, only by the majority of MPs that have shares/positions on the board of private health insurers’ or ‘When can we vote on your pension’).
dr_deathFree MemberNorth East
(it seems to be shite though, the locals are taking grammes at a time so it is probably mostly baking powder)
dr_deathFree MemberEmsz – because it is negatively impacting on the rest of society?
(Some parts of it directly [police, ambulance staff, hospital staff, people who live/work in town centers] and some indirectly [alleged cost of£90 to every taxpayer])
dr_deathFree MemberPrezet – Thanks, nice to be appreciated occasionally (rather than the usual ignored or being told to **** off, or that “I pay your wages’ – really that one never gets old and actually I think you’ll find that it’s me that pays your benefits)
allthepies – red – Coz’ red ones go faster (well known FACT)
dr_deathFree MemberHarmony One is the one for you (b’dum tsh).
I had the same issue with TV, PS3, Mutliroom sound sytem, Amp. Harmony controls them all (and I may even change my light switches to radio controlled ones just to add to the coolness factor…..)
dr_deathFree MemberAs an A&E doctor who still occasionally rides an MTB I probably have the right to an opinion on this….
I don’t mind treating anyone who turns up, it’s kinda what I get paid for. However it annoys me having to treat people who turn up for no other reason than they are absolutely wasted. I don’t mind if you have had a few drinks and fallen over, it happens to the best of us, but if your only complaint is that you have got so drunk that you’ve shit yourself I’m not entirely sure how that suddenly becomes my problem.
With regard to the ‘people injure themselves getting fit’ argument I disagree. People don’t go out on their bikes with the express intent of injuring themselves, these are called accidents; people do go out on a night out with the express intent of getting so wasted they can no longer stand/getting into a fight.
Minimum pricing – this, I think, would be a good idea. There are bars in the city where I work where you can get a treble and a mixer for under £2. This, plus other ‘Happy Hour’ type drinks promotions, encourages people to drink far more than is sensible, in too short a period of time. I accept that there is an argument for peoples liberty to do as they please, as put forward by Emsz above, but a large proportion of society have repeatedly shown that they will not take responsibility for their own actions, and this is where the government has to step in. Minimum pricing would not affect most peoples drinking but it would mean that a subsection of our society would be able to afford either less shots on a night out, or less nights out; both of these are good things.
Cynic-al – drugs are on the whole very cheap. Cheaper than a night on the lash. Ecstasy currently retails at a fiver for two pills in my neck of the woods and heroin is down to around four quid a wrap, cocaine is around £20 a gramme. It is being addicted and requiring ever increasing doses and not having a job that makes it seem expensive. (FWIW I wish the government would get around to legalising and controlling ecstasy as I very rarely see anyone who has taken too many E’s and got in a fight/fallen over and shit themselves.)
As for the costs…. It’s not just the alleged £90 per taxpayer, which must include chronic alcohol related problems as most of the inebriated I see don’t actually require anything doing other than paring in a wheelchair and keeping an eye on until they are sober enough to clean up their own vomit/poo (yes, we do make them). However, it’s not just the monetary costs, I do have to spend some time making sure that these people are actually just drunk and not injured/hypoglycaemic etc. This time could be better spent doing something more useful, like looking after your gran in cubicle seven while she has a heart attack……
Anyway, enough prattling on from me…. Any questions?
dr_deathFree MemberAhhh, paracetamol, codeine and brufen. The holy trinity of pain relief…..
Take two paracetamol every 4 hours, take 400mg of brufen every 4 hours (four times a day, not three like it says on the box); alternate them so you are taking something every two hours. Codeine on top if you have been prescribed it.
Don’t take aspirin and brufen as they are both NSAIDs and it will do nothing extra other than give you gut rot and if you’re lucky make you go deaf.
(obviously this is what I would do and not advice I would give to someone I have never met over the internet without knowing why they wanted to take so many painkillers/their medical history, allergies, other meds etc)
p.s. that’s free NHS advice. If the Godforsaken Tory Health Bill gets through you can just owe me the £50
dr_deathFree MemberPaul…. Nowt that shouldn’t fix if you stop taking it.
(I still think you should just MTFU though…. ;-))
dr_deathFree MemberThey will fall off, they may break something, we can more than likely fix whatever they break as most injuries seem to be elbows and wrists, they will have fun.
They are unlikely to do any serious damage to themselves.

dr_deathFree MemberIf you get one of these widgets you can connect via usb or just stick the card in…. £6.49 and more functionality then the official (£25) apple doodad. I think mine was from somewhere different and cost a tenner but you get the point.
dr_deathFree MemberTetanus booster in the last ten years = covered
Five tetanus boosters in your life = covered(bearing in mind that you should have had five as a kid [2,3 and 4 months, 4 years and 14 years ish] then as long as you were born after 1961 [when they introduced the routine stabbing of kids], and got all your jabs then you should be alright)
dr_deathFree MemberWhisky is, on the whole, awesome and a drink to be savored and enjoyed.
Laphroig however, tastes like dead people. FACT
dr_deathFree MemberGot one on the spur of the moment from the cash and carry. Felt nice and seemed to ease the tension til it packed in after a fortnight…. Took it back and didn’t bother replacing it TBH. Keep thinking I might though, although I would go for a better model. Let us know your experiences if you decide to go for it.
dr_deathFree MemberTo be fair Paul I did say it was probably a post viral thing (which it was) and that it would get better with time (which it did) and that you should pop along to A&E if it got worse (which it did and you did).

Although in the back of my mind I was thinking GB syndrome but didn’t want to worry you so just told you to go to A&E if it got worse….
