Agree with (most) of the above.

Mallet deformity, fairly common mechanism of injury putting your hand in your pocket. Six weeks in a mallet splint (see pic above) which you MUST wear if you want it to heal. Don’t be tempted to take it off after a couple of weeks and give it an experimental bend to see whether it’s healed. It hasn’t.
When you need to clean your rank finger, put your hand flat on a table and slide the splint off, clean finger with babywipe or similar and slide splint back on, re-tape in position.
After 6 weeks of constant wearing, during which time you will wish they had just chopped the inconvenient finger off, you will get to wear it for a further two weeks whilst doing anything that might injure it…
Then comes the big reveal….. anythin less than 15degrees of bend is considered a success, anything more = operation ( and another 6 weeks in a splint)

Happy to help. (I have about 6 degrees bend in my right little finger after falling off my MTB)

forgot to say.. pop to your local minor injuries or walk-in or A&E (whichever is handiest) as it will need an x-ray to see if it is the bone or the tendon….. hope it’s the bone.

Thanks for all the suggestions… Northern quarter sounds worth a visit, I’ll pack my best NHS specs.

Cloud 23 had been recommended by a mate so good to see it seconded.

MOSI sounds right up my street… Less so for Mrs Dr_Death (and is her birthday).

Thanks again, and if anyone else has any other suggestions, feel free to pitch in.

    What Lemonysam said…

Plus I’d also add 21, cafe Vivo, Bridge inn, electric east. All in the town centre. Train in, taxi home, job done.

When are you going to be there?

Some great recommendations on here so far, and I agree with almost all of them…

Broad Chare – agreed, great ‘pub grub’
Lane 7 – It only opened a 4 weeks ago so they are still finding their feet, but the burgers are amazeballs, and you can bowl afterwards and a great selection of beers.
    Sachins – great Indian
Cafe 21 – my fave restaurant in Newcastle…. Love it, a lot
Caffe Vivo – Also owned by Terry Laybourne, also awesome
The Bridge Tavern – New place down on the quayside, not been yet but the food is meant to be ace…. Mostly coz they knicked the head chef from the Broad Chare…

If you are back up anytime next year from about february/march, there is a great new place going to be opening on Collingwood Street called two/fifths….. It will be ace (Disclaimer: I own a bit of it….)

I’ve got one of iZettle’s card readers for my card transactions and been pretty impressed… Nothing to compare it too obviously, but I’ve had no problems so far and found it easy to use and set up. Just download the companion app fro iphone/ipad.

If its folding back on itself, something is definitely wrong… I would say PCL, poss ACL, needs a proper look at.
Back to the GPs I’m afraid. Be persuasive

We had one of these… up at 6 every morning without fail.

We bought a Gro-clock and started it at 6:10 and then slowly moved the time forward to a more normal 7 o’clock. He now knows that he is not allowed to come wake mummy and daddy up until the sun comes up on his clock….

Bit of perseverance, but worth it.

Got myself sorted out as the only Botox provider in Morpeth, added a clinic at a beauty salon in Northumberland Park, meeting with a guy setting up a new business doing mens accessories that I may be investing in, sorted out two nights out for the guys and gals at work. Interesting meeting with a guy that owns his own bowling alley.

Not bad for a day off…..

Oh, and I suppose I should cover the A&E/GP/Minor injuries bit as well:

A lot of minor injuries units will not do chest injuries as they don’t do chest/heads/some other stuff that can potentially kill you.

GP is a good bet as they can have a listen to your chest and punt you up to us for an X-ray if they think it is required.

A&E: We’ll turn our hands to almost anything, but bring a book if you ain’t dying…. (early mornings are quietest).

OK, I’m an A&E doc so I suppose I should wade in to this with some sort of answer:

Rib fractures/breaks/cracks/damage to the bony bits/whatever you want to call it:

Nothing we can do to fix the broken bones/nothing needs doing to fix the broken bones, therefore firing masses of radiation at your chest is a bad thing. We will probably give you some decent painkillers (if you have been polite and not an arsehole).
Will take about 4-6 weeks to get better, probably get a bit worse before getting better and will occasionally get worse during the healing process when you sneeze/turn a bit quick.

Bruised chest wall/bruised ribs/whatever you want to call it:

As above, no treatment to fix it, no x-ray required, decent analgesia. May get a bit worse before it gets better, will take 3-4 weeks to get better.

    Mutliple rib fractures (>4ish):

May well require some time in hospital as it will be **** painful and we might ask the nice anaesthetic doctors to put in some sort of nerve block.

    Punctured lung/pneumothorax:

Will leave you short of breath, will get an x-ray if we suspect it after looking/listening to you, and will probably require me to stick a great big drain in your chest to fix it (my fave ever procedure).

I think that about covers it….

At 4 months from previous injury it’s still healing, the metal work is not as strong as bone so it will bend. Just bad luck chief.

Try and avoid falling on it for a while and it’ll be fine….. All that stainless ain’t cheap!

Inspiring stuff Matt, well done for getting back out there.

That right wrist is/was (in my humble, technical medical opinion; based on a dozen years in practice) “A bit ****”.

I picked up an iZettle machine-widget on offer. I use it for any card transactions for my business. 2.75% charge per transaction and you can e-mail a receipt direct from within the app.

It’s pretty good, you can set up a catalogue within the app, or on the website and apply discounts and suchlike as you go along.

It’s worked out pretty well as a lot of my customers don’t like carrying the amount of cash my services cost…

Agree with CaptFlash (and the rest). We had the angelcare with motion sensor and it’s been good. Motion sensor was a little bit fiddly to get positioned right at first as JrDrDeath is a wriggler and would just roll off it, but once that was sorted we were away.
Reasonably tough as well, montior has been dropped down the stairs at least twice and still works fine (slight crack in the protective screen).
The motion sensors need to be mounted on something flat. I didn’t realise this until it came to set it up so just used a piece of thickish cardboard I found lying around and this worked fine.

    Further north than that Niall.

I think what tobago was trying to say was that people in the trade always think you make yourself look like a right dick when you go on the telly. The general public probably don’t pick up on the subtle mistakes/stupidity etc. Same for every busmans holiday type show I would expect….

Not a thread Organic, simple and obvious.

The the are filed in the bin, solo artists under their surname, numbers before all the letters and compilations are all at the end in the compilations section, also in alphabetical order.

There’s rumour afoot that they are going to move 24 hours in A&E to my department….. I will not be amused. Already appeared on the first series of Junior doctors and wasn’t very happy about that.

As a general rule, any doc that wants to appear on telly, probably shouldn’t be on telly.

Agreed, seen plenty come through my front doors and they always seem to be little old ladies. Can’t recall ever seeing it in anyone under 70 odd and I’m sure they would stick out as they would be so rare.

Don’t let it put you off, this has made the papers as it is vanishingly rare.

We’ve done similar before… a couple of years back. Flew into Boston, stayed there a couple of days, then hired a car and headed for the coast, drove up to Salem and then down through Plymouth, cape cod, Marthas Vineyard, Newport. Got the ferry across to Long island (don’t tell the rental company) and then dropped the car off at JFK and got a taxi to Manhattan. Stayed there for 4-5 days then flew out of JFK.

Also been to Washington DC and Philly and they are also worth seeing.

Don’t think you’ll go far wrong whatever you plan, just look at the map and plan before you go and see what looks feasible.

If you want any more info, just ask…

Mrs Toast… I’m not going to name it after a pun, just that this forum is usually good for a laugh. I was after some serious suggestions too, but also after a laugh.

Best so far from other friends are ‘whay eye brow’ and ‘Newcastle frown ale’
