I live 10 mins away from Shotover too but only go up there late in the evening in summer or after dark in winter. It's a popular place for walkers with children and dogs so not worth it in daylight in my opinion. The two bridleways are not much cop if you want to stick to the proper rights of way and the cheeky stuff is best saved for night rides. You'd be much better off hitting the Chilterns that you'd pass through to get to Shotover. A similar distance from Reading is Badbury clumps (sp?) over near Faringdon. I've never been but I understand there's an agreement with the FC over there and some DH trails have been constructed?

    +1 for the Garmin forerunner.

It is relatively expensive but I use it on the bike as well. If training for a race you can download training schedules and follow those using the track your progress.

For some people it may be too much information but I like being able to compare times and HR from run to run and week to week. It doesn't have the option of mapping software but you can save routes and use it as a rudimentary navigation tool.

Can one of the members of the constabulary who have posted please be sure to update the rest of us when you finally catch up with our dear friend Moz. In the meantime I guess we'll have to make do with barnsleymitch's T-shirts to remind of this happy time. I suspect he'll now disappear until he gets another frame to peddle ('new' with paint chips and mud and without 'shocker' & bb). Unless he's enjoyed himself on here and wants to stick around and learn something about bikes?

Actually rather than buy one of your T-shirts I'll 'acquire' it and sell it on ebay claiming it's not stolen but refuse to reveal my sources.

Hold on before you finalise your design barnsleymitch, Moz is going to post a picture soon so we might have an image to include. I'll buy one though.

"What sort of bubble are London/uni people living in?"

If she was from Cambridge then why are you refering to 'London people'?

As for history degrees I couldn't agree more, load of old twaddle 😉 .

Speaking of Moz, where is he? He usually pops up around the same time as Jester? Let the good times roll……

Come on Moz, just make something up, but please tell us where all the stuff you sell on comes from? In this time of belt tightening it would be of interest to all us 'bike freaks'? You don't have to name names to us if you are worried it might [sharp intake of breath] be hooky?

Obviously Moz is innocent until proven guily in the STW court of law, he's just not helping himself. Can we get a crossover thread going and get the lawyer on the 'photo of a bike thief?' thread on here?

    Dr_Bakes

Moz: Rather than getting insulting 🙂 why don't you just elaborate on where the frames have come from, and how someone who admits he knows nothing about bikes comes to be selling them? At no stage have I actually said you've done anything wrong?

Lets face it if you had done something dodgy you would not be giving anything out but I'm sure you'd still denying it?

Can we assume you are indeed the ebayer/gumtree-er? You have so far implied that you bought the frame (you are now going to sell) from 'Morris in Leeds' like Lester and that it was posted to you (in spite of the ebayer doing local pick up only?).

So who wants to take a lie detector test…

Jeremy Kyle: "What is your name?"

    Chris Morris: "Chris"

    JK: "That is a lie"

CM: "Er, ok then its Moz"

    JK: "Wrong again"

    CM: "Erm, Morris?"

JK: "Nope, ok so where did these bike frames, laptops and cars you are selling come from…."

Not me but I'll be keeping my eyes peeled on ebay from now on. Personally I just hate bike thieves.

Moz (etc etc), your man is obviously all for full disclosure? Where did he get this frame from, and the other one(s?). Where do your cars and laptops that you have on ebay and gumtree come from while you're at it? I'm sure they're all above board but I'd be interested to know?

What has Chris Morris been up to recently? This might all be part of a satirical look at the society's inability to deal with bike crime in the 21st Century coming soon on Channel 4?

The problem is that these bikes so rarely seem to get recovered so that the thief, the seller (if not the same person) AND the purchaser all win. It's the victim, insurer and those of us whose premiums increase who lose?

    Dr_Bakes

This is hilarious. Moz (who likes cars, is a 'seller' and from Leeds; and incidentally spells atrociously) just bought his frame and is now selling it instantly, has checked it's not from Jungle to his satisfaction, and is generally convince the ebay seller is 'alright guvnor'?

I think my time buying on ebay may be coming to an end!

MTBfix, can you do the same for a 47. My email's in my profile if so as I'd be interested. Sorry I don't know which shop you run assuming you manage one but drop me details on how you'd want paying too?

Silverspeed. Email Mattie_H and he'll put you on our mailing list. We're actually riding to the west of Oxford tonight from the carpark by McDonalds on the Botley road at 7:30 if you can make it?

I ordered my DX bike specific light on the 15th Sept, it was listed as being sent from Hong Kong on the 2nd October and arrived this morning. Looking forward to giving it a go tonight but it looks good so far. I'll be using it on the bar with one of my P7 torches on my helmet….

Yeah it's a whip scorpion/spider as roper said. I saw one the size of a dinner plate on a night hike in Peru last year and nearly shat myself. I didn't think they were venomous either but may be wrong?

I went to Peru last year and managed to get on a bike twice. We hired in Cusco and Arequipa and went with a guide on tame-ish stuff. There is some great stuff there obviously (given the topography) but the bikes we had were shocking. Ancient death trap hardtails. They gave us the choice between ones with no brakes or no suspension! Given the altitude the modest routes we did were adventurous enough and I was just grateful to get out on a bike.

However, if you are going for biking (or indeed climbing/hiking) specifically I think the place to go would be the Haurascaran mountains. I emailed this guy[/url] and he sent some useful info back. The problem I had was that we were on a tour and the itinery wouldn't give us enough time to get up there and aclimatise to the altitude before moving on. Having said that we (two fairly fit early 30s) didn't suffer too much from altitude anywhere even when walking at 5000m plus. We were taking in the usual tourist attractions including Macchu Picchu etc which are further south. Of course altitude sickness and fitness are far from mutually exclusive. Hope that helps.

Duckers, I'm still planning on using one torch on the helmet so I'll probably keep the other as a 'spare'(especially given some peoples reliability concerns!).

Either way I'll wait and see what the bike light is like first. I'll give you first refusal if I do decide to get ride of the 5-mode torches in due course though.

I'd also always want two lights just incase. Even an Ay-Up or Maxx could 'die' if hitting a tree at speed for example? I like the head mounted support on twisty wooded singletrack for seeing what's coming too.

    ROFL snap on two counts.
    1) Kid due imminently (next week);
    2) Just bought a DX bike light.

I've been using two P7 torches, one on the bar and one on the helmet until now. On high they last an hour but I'd have thought on low (for a 2 mode) they'd last several hours. I'm sure I read it's 3 hours on medium (5 mode version) and I've had them last the duration of 2 hour rides when switching from med to high.

I've bought the bike specific light as I've started running them on high all the time as my mates have got brighter lights and I get shadows as a result! To be honest I could manage but I thought the 50 notes worth the risk to try out a more specific solution and give me a spare P7.

As for helmet mounting, I use one of these on my Bell Slant but it has horizontal 'bars' between vents on which to attach. It depends on the design of helmet as to whether you want one of these or the kind that theboatman uses.

Hopefully this setup will last the year (the P7's lasted all last winter with no problems). Next year maybe I'll get a troutlite? 😀

Just back from a night ride and watched Episode 1 of Series 2. We managed to get through Series 1 last week and this one is simering nicely like a dark soup liberally sprinkled with expletive croutons.

Put a link to multimap so we can see?

As has been said being rude will achieve nothing whether you're in the right or wrong and may brand all of us bikers (who no doubt look the same in a helmet etc) thugs? I worry misinformed people like this will end up booby trapping the ROWs with branches or worse and our options will get fewer.

    Commiserations! 😉

If it's markets you're after then that part of the island is probably not for you. That said we were there in the off-season and a lot of places were closed. I only briefly passed through Calgliari but my brother (who lives there) says a lot of good things about it. If I speak to him soon I'll ask and post anything of use.

I stayed here in April. Oligiastra is up on the east coast but not a million miles from Cagliari. It wasn't self catering but I think they also have an apartment which is? I think I'm safe to assume you're a biker (!) in which case there are many options, the website will tell you more. The MTB trails are a bit hit and miss but one descent to Cala Luna was awesome and all natural. This area is also great for hiking, climbing, sea kayaking and road biking and there is a frequent and pretty reliable bus service from Cagliari. I think it took about 3.5 hours.

Sounds like you'll need outer, liner and inner then? The inner is coated so I don't think 'normal inner' will run smoothly through the liner. Sounds like you'll need a whole new kit sorry? I'm happy to stand corrected?

I’ve got a Deuter Hydro EXP12 and it is brilliant. 3L bladder, three compartments and loads of pockets, expandable, rain cover, the list goes on. I got it for less than £40 online. Deuter packs are really well designed and I’d say it was well worth a look.

Domino, That seems to happen in many fields. I don’t stand a chance of getting training in my consultancy post but have a good list of courses I attended during my last public sector experience three years ago.

It’s all about the bottom line in the private sector which I totally understand, but sometimes better value for money can be generated through staff retention. I’ve lost count of the number of people that have passed through the seemeingly revolving doors while I’ve been here. You think they’d take the hint!?

On the other hand the public sector could learn a lot about efficiency from the private, and make better use of the public pound!
