Why do you need a tapered steerer – does that just not narrow the choice down or the resale ablilty – you can get a spaced headset to cope with a normal steerer tube.

Well, presumably there’s some advantage to a tapered steerer unless it’s all manufacturer’s guff, which it quite possibly is but then I won’t know unless I try. Dammit.

Get some Fox ones with the bling tastic kasima coating. Mmmmm.

Not really within my budget at the moment.

‘White’ – that will look so wrong on your new stealth carbon frame.

I’m not taking advice on my frame from someone who wear socks and sandles 😉

I can probably live without a black fork and that sounds a good deal

Your OP isn’t clear on the colour!

Sorry my mistake, I wanted white, but can live with black! They’ll do the job.

Does that one you’ve linked to come with Poploc as well only I can’t see mention of it?

Yeah the u-turn never seems to get used on my older Revs to be honest. I can probably live without a black fork and that sounds a good deal.

p.s. Good to know you’ve had no wear in a year and proves they’ve got it right. I found on my old Trance the top bushing would wear out first and started using the upgrade kits from TFT.

I’ve just got a new Trance X now with this design and I guess it might save a marginal amount of weight but will also save some cash in the long run!

I saw this recently on the same subject. It seems it is not necessary due to the design?

If it turns out to be screwed let me know as I have a one just back and untocuhed from a service where it also had a new shaft and air canister. Mine was seriously messed up so I had it rebuilt only to be tempted by a new frame while it was away!

I was planning on selling the old frame (Trance 2006/7) with the shock but could be tempted to part with the shock separately. It’s a 165 x 37mm Float r so may not fit the newer model?

I bought some of the Jagwire ones from Taiwan on ebay as I couldn’t find them cheaper in the UK. JE James had some of the silver clamping ones but I specifically wanted them in black. Worked out at less than £12 for four and came in less than a week iirc.

Drilling out the stops loooked like it would be a nightmare on my frame given the positions in relation to the headtube and seatube.

I’d been the picture of health all year until last week then wham!

Good job I sent my suspension off for a service so I don’t feel I’m missing out too much. I’m crawling off home to bed now.

    Me too.

I’ve got just those symptoms and am glad to read you’ve only had it for 24-36 hours suggesting I’m nearly done. Currently feeling awful and woke up intermittently with sweats and shivers throughout the night. This is the latest in a line of colds and sickness I’ve had in the last two weeks each with a few days off inbetween!

Trimix, I’ve heard you can take a Hammerschmidt apart in a lunch hour?

Now putting it back together again, that’s a whole other issue!

We’ve got a Chariot CX1 which is the same as the Cougar but with a hand brake for using it while running.

It is brilliant and Dr_Bakes jnr seems to love it, even when we did the Great Glen Way over two days. Suspension probably isn’t necessary but it certainly improves the ride and probably makes it easier to tow if you are riding rough stuff. It copes admirably with roots, pot holes and kerbs. They are superbly deisgned and even fold up pretty small.

However, we bought ours second hand and I’d expect to recoup a fair bit of that when we sell it on. I believe there are retailers in europe via ebay that can save a fair bit on the UK RRP depending on the exchange rates.

Ayups are great. As mentioned they have low and high settings now and a flashing mode too.

The adventure set comes with everything you could possibly want (and more) including: the gecko mounts and a petzl style head strap, two sets of lights, two 3 hr and one 6hr battery and chargers (car and mains). They even have the saxon caps which converts them into a rear facing bright red light for on the road.

I’ve run mine for 5 months and they’ve been faultless. The cables have been no problem whatsoever. The only slight downside with the system is them being difficult to transfer from helmet to helmet as you need to apply velcro dots to attach to.

All for roughly the price of one Maxx D.

I’ve got the rubber clamp 305 mount. You don’t need to use the cable ties on 31.8mm bars as it tightens up with the unit’s strap anyway. It might be a little loose with ties on 25.4mm bars unless you’re careful but I haven’t had any problems with either.

It’s a bit cheaper than the velcro one but I must admit a bit of pipe lagging would probably do the job just as well!

You should get away with bending it back the once. i did the same on my old LX and it was good as new. Do it again and the metal will probably fatigue and then you’ll be in trouble!

This thread came up last year.

I see from Facebook that Jim has been doing a lot of work on the downhill trails on Monchique. Lagos is a nice place to be based too.

I’ve never had that problem and can’t see why it would, unlike GT85 liberally sprayed around?

Could the loss of braking power be related to a post-Xmas increase in weight rather than pad contamination 😉

To be honest I think it was more of wrench for me when we dropped our son off for the first time *sniff*.

I think it was a week or so before he stopped crying when we left him but the staff were excellent and would distract him as best they could. We were told he soon settled after we had left. After a few weeks he would start to jig and wiggle (clear signs of a happy boy!?) as we approached the nursery!

In my opinion I think being at nursery has made him much less clingy than the children of friends who’ve not been.

We recently had a similar dispute with M&S over jewellery using their “Gem Card”. We had to accept a cash settlement 20% less than the value of the item if buying anything from a shop other than those linked to the Gem Card (mostly chains such as F Hinds, Goldsmiths, Beaverbrooks, H Samuels etc) and only had 12 months to replace the jewellery which my wife had collected over 20 odd years.

Apparently their original valuation of our loss took the discounts they get via this Gem Card arrangement with the retailers into account. I have to admit the original valuation was more than we had expected (especially given the somewhat vague descriptions we had of the more unusual items) so it may be so. We still have a lot to spend, which may result in jewellery being a popular Xmas gift to our family this year to get it spent before 12 months is up!

We also had a few conversations in which I explained that their suggested replacements were nothing like the stolen item, but in each case they then agreed on my explanation and alternative. Fortunately the bikes were the only thing of value the thieving scum left behind so I’ve no experience with Wheelies other than a replacement pump, tube, and puncture repair kit which were dealt with pretty easily.

Really nice. I like the camera positioning giving a combination of some long views and low perspectives on corners where appropriate. Autumn is perfect for this kind of footage with the leaves still settling long after you are out of shot. Did you use a tripod for that and what editing software was it if you don’t mind me asking? Did you remember to go back and get your camelbac as you appear to have lost it halfway through 😉 ?

Nice, but you’d better tie it down in this weather or it’ll blow away Ben! I’m going to strap 9lbs of lead on it next time to even things up!

fatmutha, I did the same using the middle from my triple but I took two links out of the chain. It will probably make quite a difference to the tension and help keep that chain on,

I’ve ordered a singlespeed chain ring with deeper teeth now I know that 1×9 is good for me, so that should help even more.

Superstar do a chain guide or tensioner for £17 or a guide and tensioner for £35. I’ve been using the basic guide for a few weeks now with a standard ramped chain ring and am yet to loose the chain, even on two laps of Cwmcarn yesterday.

Trimix on here runs 800mm bars on his custom Transition Covert used mostly for XC. He’s not the incredible hulk.

Yup, been there, done that during afternoon naps.

The job would invariably be interupted by the waking child, requiring a mad rush inside, frantic wash of the hands and run upstairs before social services are alerted! His mum would come home and question me over how he got the oily marks on his face later that day!

Hi there Peter. Looks like the training is paying dividends and you’ve clearly caught the MTB bug!

I bet you’ll find things easier to roll on the new bike than you did on the hardtail. If nothing else you’ll get less battered and remain in control without feeling as though your arms are about to drop off! That Canyon is ‘more bike’ than we took out there two years ago but there are certainly trails to warrant it. From the videos it looks like you’re uncovering more and more routes each week, I’m very jealous of the playground you have on your doorstep!

You wouldn’t see it if you go for a 40T chainring at the front 😆

    Tom dB – web monkey

is it just me or does that bit that sticks out the top on the SS/E13/MRP et al guide look really fugly.

I might saw that bit off as well now that it’s in the right position.

I thought about doing the same but was concerned it might weaken it and if the chain did snag cause more trouble than it’s worth. Tbh I think I can live with it and it’s less fugly than a front mech. I agree that Paul’s ‘Paul’ is a more elegant solution.

They haven’t got the little chainring size guide on them but it’s not too tricky to set up anyway. Like I said, so far so good on mine and this is my first attempt at 1×9.

swoosh, I’m just using an SLX triple chainset minus big ring and the granny. I’ve got a 32T Salsa singlespeed ring (big teeth) on order from Charlie the BM but the royal mail have conveniently lost it en route, however so far the chain has stayed in place.

    Dr_Bakes

I’ve been experimenting with 1×9 this last week using a 32T chainring and 11-32 cassette and one of Superstar’s XCR £17 chain devices.

It looks much the same as Sir HC’s E13 and futon river crossing’s mrp above.

Initial impressions are very good. After a bit of fettling with BB spacers to get the device in line with the chainline I’ve been loving it. In four rides I’ve not lost the chain and there’s only a tiny bit of rub on the device when I’m in the 11T at the back that I will try eradicate when I can be bothered.

I’ve been to Lagos (Algarve) with Jim at the Mountain Bike Adventure too. It was a couple of years ago and they’ve been adding trails since then I believe.

Jim is an ex-downhiller but the riding varies from some really nice local scenic coastal rides to uplifts on the extinct Monchique volcano. We rode from the top of Monchique (900m odd) all the way back down to sea level on one day on a combination of goat tracks, rocky singletrack and fireroad.

I did it when the exchange rate was more in our favour but it was a good deal with pick up from the airport, accomodation and biking all thrown in at the time.

Good advice fatboyslo, it's been a bad enough experience already without needing to hit a brick wall with the insurance company.

jlc, I like the idea and I'll give it a go for some of the easier items, in particular cameras. the downside is it'll string things out and some of these things are needed in the not too distant future. I guess, how protracted to make this is partly my decision to make.

Quirrel, it'll depend on your insurance and whether it includes accidental damage? An old friend of mine managed to drop hers out of a third floor window (I have no idea how exactly) and claimed for that. Personally I think such stupidity should be exempt but I don't make the rules!
