Website has been down today, hope you guys get it fixed.

Slight concern about the downhill start, how about making it up the track to the carpark, and turn left and left again to go down the singletrack for the start loop?

The SCX start in 2007 was chaos, with a fair few riders coming a cropper at the bottom of the descent. Would be a bit nasty to have someone’s season ruined if they were involved in a pileup on the start of the first race!

certainly more cx bikes now than when i started racing the scottish series (2001?). been a while since someone’s one on a proper mtb though (dan’s flat barred things don’t count…)?

best thing season has been seeing kids on proper cx bikes of various sizes.

Ross C won Mugdock on an MTB in the 2008 series.

Everyone should try CX, it’s the dogs knickers.

As for those mocking XC courses, please get yourself north for an SXC this year, you will not be disappointed. Well, you might be if you prefer riding round fields.

in all my years of cx racing i have never seen someone win on an mtb.
    Just an observation.

Up until the last few years plenty of the Scottish races were won on MTBs. More recently people have been moving to CX bikes (they’re faster), but it can still be done by the right rider/conditions.

TJ – I’m sure no-one would object to a tandem. Stairs and hurdles might be interesting on it though, need some good teamwork.

    Not technical, rough!!

Tight singletrack is also proper hard on a CX bike, courses like Mugdock show this where MTBs regularly win.

Chipps – You were getting beaten by Davie Graham!

Dan W was riding a Merida of some sort. Hill runner, has always favoured flat bars for some reason.

TandemJeremy, how come you’ve never been to a Scottish CX Series race? I think you would be shocked at how much faster a CX bike is on those sorts of courses. Only times an mtb is faster than a CX bike is on real rough stuff (think Glentress Black or Inners – Yes, I know you can do them on a CX bike, just slower) and when big climbs are involved.

You should come along, MTBs welcome at all rounds. Starts October, see you there.

Maybe it’s time for a re-visit. Looking at my photos the last time I rode there was 2006, so maybe they nukes some of the ‘forestry road’ with replacement singletrack.

Will be there twice this year for racing anyway, will maybe ride the black on the Sunday after 10@K.

I thought the black was a bit over-hyped. Basically the (awesome) red with lots of fire-road to get to the frankfully very un-exciting slickrock.

No need. You’ll probably have trouble getting tyres on and off if you do put rimtape on.

According to the Bob Parkin book, ‘A Dog in a Hat’ (real amusing read btw), Kimmage was as up to the eyeballs as the rest of the 80s peleton.

I would *really* like to think that Armstrong is clean, and since the tests are the best proof we have either way, I have to assume he is. Unfortunately many of my heroes have been tainted, but I still enjoy the spectacle of racing.

Run both, a lot easier to inflate with the strips, but no other discernible difference.

Is good fun. A little frustrating at first until you learn to run away from fights.

If it were easy to do everything, then no-one would make any money doing it. There has to be a line somewhere, buttons are it in this case. You have to get off your backside and learn it, or else pay someone to do it.

    Very poor rant.

iPhone G3 will be out June or July, if Apple keep the same release schedule as many people believe they will.

I have a 1G, camera is pretty crap in all but perfect conditions. Love the phone otherwise, has stood up to a lot of abuse in the last 16 months and is a pleasure to use.

Never heard of this until the STW article, and neither has anyone else I’ve spoken to. I’d take it as hearsay tbh.

M970 is interchangable with M770, marginally different bearing quality.
M960 is marginally narrower than above, so they tend to need a small spacer behind one cup to stop the crank preload bottoming out.

The chances of someone taking you down with them when they touch your back wheel is pretty small, I’ve been there lots of times and not hit the ground when they have.

The other option is just to not let it happen. With decent stretches between lights you can slowly up the pace until you see them dropping off, slow down a little and do the same again. They’ll soon suffer. Hills help obviously. Makes for a good interval session too.

Have an 11yo ESS. Still mental, helped of course by a little bit of arthritis medication. Super keen to please well behaved, and loves the pats! Good with kids, the only time he ever gets the slightest bit aggressive is when other dogs try to steal his toys.

During the night he comes up to check we’re OK, then pads back downstairs to his basket. He woke his previous owners up when there was a fire in the house by dragging them out of bed.

I sort of got him a bit obsessed with the Christmas tree, he would just sit and stare at it for ages:

    £500 would seem pretty reasonable.
