He has, should recover in time for Giro.

Just bend the non-bent tab a tiny bit, work fine for me. Certain hub/fork combos cause the rivets to touch the bottom of the post mount, but a file soon sorts that. Marzocchi Corsa had these issues, Reba and SID are fine.

The secret to going fast is going slow. Train easy, if you feel you’re trying, it’s too fast. Roadies have the worst training regimes ever. The 18mph average will come, but I wouldn’t get fixated on it.

Be prepared for your wallet to take a battering though – prices for the MTB ones are over £400, road ones go up to £650 or so!

I think you’re talking about the cranks rather than the rings on their own.

Is £165 according to the velotech site: http://www.velotechservices.co.uk/acatalog/MTB_&_XTR_Q-Rings.html

Shimano got the oval the wrong way, they should have turned it by 90degrees. Rotor rings are adjustable though, so you can set them how you like. Sauser etc will be setting them up to give max power at a given heartrate, measured in a range of positions.

Great bikes, the blue/white one has now been demoted to a training bike, still spankingly light though.

Do Rocky Mountain have some sort of deal for the cover pic? I’m sure it’s the second one in several issues.

Good looking issue though, might be hard to top the last issue, which IMO was the best ever.

Top guy – He’s volunteered to drive a van down to UK bikepark for the Edinburgh Uni squad. Also marshalled today at Inners, putting the sport before his own participation.

    Cracking day out!

I did note multiple photographers on the way round, links to galleries are very much appreciated, so post if you see some.

I read the first post as ‘cow’, rather than ‘crow’. I was having great difficulty understanding how you let it out the rooflight.

I stopped using peaks a long time ago, found them of no benefit apart from fashion.

    i’ve been 86.5 km/h offroad (54mph)

and about the same on road.

Poland? I really wish I had a speedometer on for that race.

Got a long pressure-drive to carry in my pockets on the road bike. Great little pump, easily gets 100psi without all the usual sweating and discomfort of a regular minipump.

Have a look at Islabikes: http://www.islabikes.co.uk/bike_pages/beinn24.html

They’ll even buy the bike back when you move to a bigger one.

Course for this is sweet. If you normally ride Glentress or Inners on a Sunday, consider riding this event to experience some of the brilliant non-waymarked trails.

+1 for the Olympics. 2 years on mine only have a few scratches on them. Mate has a set of 4.2s, they seem rather cheese like in comparison and are about to be replaced after an almost identical purchase date to my olympics.

Pushloc has one push button that does both. Poploc has two buttons, one on, one off. Poploc can also adjust just how ‘locked-out’ the fork gets.

Been dumping it down in North Queensferry for several hours now, only lying on the beach though.

One snowflake fell in London, all buses, trains and tube trains are off due to dangerous conditions, and an entire city of bankers are stuck in their offices with extra time to contemplate how many zeros should be on their bonus cheque.

Wear a mask, us a grit-edged blade as suggested above.

Highly recommend a carbocut blade, as this cuts through fibres rather than tearing at them.

The epoxy is pretty expensive, probably best just to bin it.

New SIDs, totally awesome forks. As reliable as Rebas and as stiff as Foxes.

World Cups won’t be worth the money till later this year when the carbon crown/steerer is released. For the moment I’d go for either of the other two.

I’ve been running a set of Olympic rims for two years almost full time. Apart from a few scratches there is very little damage to them compared to my other wheels with 717s. The low rim-height means they are better protected by the tyre.

Awesome rims, highly recommended. A review I wrote: http://douglasfshearer.com/blog/wheel-review-stans-ztr-olympic-rim-american-classic-hubs

Totally cracking course, really hoping for more racing there this year.

Sorry to hear someone came off badly, I hope they are well soon.

    Whatever, don’t get XTR cassettes.
The ti spider (freehub interface) wears out before the cog teeth, which is pretty bloody ridiculous.

The spider is made of alloy, just like the XT. Sounds like poor mechanics, those parts should never wear.

Things like rear mech, cassettes and chainrings can wear out quickly and the difference in replacing these particular parts with xt and xtr is huge and in my opinion doesn’t outweigh the marginal benefits…make sense?

Yeah, totally. XTR cassettes do last quite a bit longer than XT (especially for people who don’t use the smaller cogs), but it’s nowhere near the 3x price difference.

no significant difference in shifting quality or weight.

Anyone who thinks that XT shifts as good as XTR is kidding themselves. The cassette makes no difference as someone has pointed out above, but XTR shifters, mechs, chainsets and cables are so smooth it’s almost zero effort. Oh, and over 400g in weight is considered a significant weight saving on a trail bike.

XTR is more expensive, that’s the only excuse anyone needs to plump for the exceptionally good XT.

My preference? XTR on the race bike, and a mix of XT and XTR hand-me-downs on the trail bike.

Did a few laps this afternoon. What can I say, the course is so good. Not worth running mud tyres, could probably get away with old-school semi-slicks if you don’t mind sliding on roots. The flowy rooty singletrack is great, should make for some fun racing.

    Bring on Sunday.

You’d need to use a Hutchinson Fusion 2 tyre, as it’s bead is strengthened to bear the extra load incurred. The bead on standard tyres will break at road pressures.

Ideally use Mavic Ksyrium or Shimano Dura-Ace wheels which have no spoke holes in the rim bed. A tubeless valve and you’ll be good to go.

I bought a pair of Ksyrium Elite last year. Awesome wheels, strong and great value for money.
