Overpaid the mortgage for 15 years whilst we were trying for kids that never arrived. Now 42 and only working 3 days a week due to a really small mortgage. Would I have preferred to have had kids when we were trying? Yes. Would I choose to have some now? No.

As for getting looked after we’ve got pleny of younger cousins, neices and nephews and by the time we need it 2 houses to give away when we die.

Was an instructor for a while until the recession first started 7-8 years. Worked 6 & 1/2 days a week for less money than I got when I swapped to driving a bus for a living 5 days a week after free training by the company. Am now happily working 3 days a week until I fully retire in another 20 years or so.

Would I go back to being an ADI? Never in a million years. Loved the actual teaching, hated all the shit mentioned above that went with it.

Done it but it was in our old house. Fine for skirting semi hidden by sofas, bath, sink etc but might stick out a bit on an open wall.

You’re going to the wrong places.

If we went to the “right places” I couldn’t afford to pay the bill never mind a tip so there’s even more reason for the staff to be paid properly in the first place.

I agree wages should be higher but there are many other underpaid professions that don’t get the extra wage top-up. I just can’t see why waiting staff are more deserving.

That wouldn’t appear to be difficult.

    Not from a diners perspective.

Nearly dropped my coffee at that last reply binners. Think your onto something there.

This thread is about tipping in restaurants.

Oh I see, waiting staff are far more special than I thought.

    :)

I walk down and fetch it myself on the rare occasion we have takeaway. They normally knock a few quid off or add in some free extras on larger orders when you collect round here ;)

It seems the forum tightwads are on the defensive, scrabbling for the limited circumstances in which it’s not usual to tip

Nurses, bus drivers, shop assistants, police, ambulance crews, fire service, cabin crew etc. etc

You’ve just made my point for me binners.

They don’t even charge you to bring it to your house never mind a few yards from the kitchen! The delivery is included in the original price ;)

However I would suggest the quality of the cuisine would leave something to be desired which is something I do base where I’d like to eat and what I’m prepared to pay on.

You do know it’s not compulsory to go to restaurants with table service?

It’s also not illegal either, what’s your point?

    Doug

Isn’t that just called ‘staying at home’?

Staying at home is when you cook it yourself. I’m happy to pay someone for their skill and ability to produce food to a much higher standard than I am able.

Of course, if we lived in a society where waiting staff were valued, we’d all be happy to bung them a modest fee we could easily afford they would be paid properly in the first place.

Obviously you place a higher value on having your food and drinks brought to the table than I do. Being relatively low paid myself I’m quite happy to go to the bar for my drinks and I’d also be happy to serve myself and would also be happy to good to the kitchen to order and collect my food. 10% on a £50 food/drinks bill for a table of 4 people would, along with minimum wage would exceed my hourly pa by serving 1 table an hour. A high proportion of that would also be tax free. Hardly undervalued!

More like well done restaurant owners for perpetuating a system that enables them to pay lower wages to employees who, by the replies on this thread, are apparently happy to let it happen.

You do know without London you’d be in the shit up there in your woodburning room with a view, don’t you?

Can we have a trial run to see if we can get by without the SE sucking the rest of the nation dry, lasting say, forever!

Back to OP, I’d clear the mortgage, buy a motorhome and spend 6 months here and 6 months travelling with the interest on the remaining 900k providing 3 times my current salary.

Are you a waiter? If so, it’s the part you would normally expect to receive as a tip.

I’m not a waiter the rest of your statement is irrelevant as is your first reply seeing as you havnt a clue what I do for a living. No one in the customer service industry I work in expects to receive any part of their wages as a tip.

It’s all part of the price customers agree to pay. If the service is rubbish customers don’t return so we are given a proper wage to include doing our jobs properly in the first place. If we then don’t give good service we get the sack.

If a service charge is optional and not included in the up front price then so should be the service? If no one then used the service then what would an employee be getting paid for?

    Except when it isn’t.

Ok what part of my job isnt covered by my wages/contract of employment?

Would those that don’t tip refuse one if offered, pointing out that the service is part of the cost of whatever it is they are selling/doing?

    Yes, because it is.

Stem lengths are measured perpendicular to the steerer tube in a similar fashion to how you measure fork rake/front axle offset. A 70mm high rise stem can be used to put the bars in the same place as a 70mm flat stem mounted higher up the steerer.

OneUp 42t+16t was £57 ($90) posted using paypal.
RAD cage was an extra £22 ($35) when posted at the same time.

Shipped from the UK and arrived in 2 days.

I first bought the 42t+16t kit without the RAD cage and fitted them one by one going for a quick ride in between as I wanted to find out exactly what difference each part did. Fitted with new 30t Blackspire Mono Veloce chainring, SLX M675 medium cage mech, XT cassette, SRAM chain and Zee shifter (I like the clunky/positive Zee shifting) .

Compared to 2×10 I lost the top and bottom ratios. I can’t remember ever using the 36/11t in the Alps this year except on short downhill road linking sections so won’t miss it. Had to put the B screw on the limit to get it to shift up to the 42t which resulted in less than snappy shifts lower down the cassette. Noticed the big jump without the 16t pretty much straight away and for me it would get annoying after a while as with the 30t it’s right where I’d be on the flatter/slightly undulating pedally sections of trails.

If I’d just gone with the 42t I’d be pretty disappointing with the low down shifting.

The 16t solved pretty much solved the jump in gears although the 3t jumps rather than 2t are still noticeable but as mentioned by other forum users above doesnt quite shift as well as the shimano cogs it replaces. I took a 16t from and old ultegra cassette I had lying around and once that was fitted I couldnt tell the difference in shifts compared to the cogs either side performance wise although it was still a little sluggish due to the B screw.

The shifting performance was something I know would annoy me over time so I ordered the RAD cage to see what difference that made for myself.

Then fitted the RAD cage and re-adjusted the b-screw. The sluggishness was pretty much gone. Not completely but I’d say 80-90% back to how everything shifted with the original parts. The RAD cage is the missing link which makes everything work together pretty much as OEM.

I didnt try the Rad cage with the OneUp 16t cog. I think that would work a lot better that it did with the standard SLX cage as the OneUp 16t cogs shifting could only exacerbated the extra distance of the mechs top pulley from the cassette. With the mech closer to the cassette I reckon the shifting would be much better.

If I was doing it all again and didnt have the Ultegra cog what would I buy?

With hindsight I’d buy the 42t+16t kit along with the RAD cage at the same time. If my current mech wasnt a mid cage one I’d take it off (I used all the old drivetrain to upgrade my XC bike to 10sp) and keep it as a spare if I only had the one bike. Only then if I wasnt satisfied with the OneUp 16t shifting would I order a new Ultegra cog which is easily fitted afterwards rather than the more involved mech stripdown to fit the RAD cage.

    Hope this helps!

Jackfrags Budget Gaming PC Build. Use onboard graphics or drop the graphics card to something around like an AMD 6450 to bring it down close to the original budget. Add a more powerful card back in later along with an SSD if he gets into gaming more seriously.

Prefer KMC myself. Havnt had one snap and you know how much weight I can put on a pedal. Just linking to the XT’s as they were cheap even by CRC standards. Normally ~£20
