£800? Was that a full packing and unpacking service?

    Packing only.

I think we were charged about £800 for three guys and a truck for the day on a 30 mile move. We actually paid about half of that after refusing to pay the original invoice because they were the most useless bunch of incompetent half-wits I have ever encountered. If you’re looking for a firm in Edinburgh there’s one I can definitely not recommend.

I don’t think it’s a serious attempt to live a self-sufficient lifestyle. The premise is to make good TV and get enough material for a book. It’ll be the media component that makes him money – not the mackerel.

    Good entertainment though.

You don’t have to have a religious service at a crematorium. You can organise whoever you want. At my Mother’s service two family members and a family friend spoke. It wasn’t in any way religious. Of course you rely on family and friends being up to the job – I wasn’t in a state to speak.

One unsupported anecdote does not make for any useful sort of evidence. But here’s mine anyway …

I met a guy and his wife at a party last month. The chap was in a wheelchair. He had some use of his arms but certainly not full use. He had plastic “splints” strapped to his arms to give him more support. He had no use of his legs.

His wife told me he had been a roadie. He fell on a corner (nobody else involved). He was wearing a helmet. His head hit the ground and twisted and he broke his neck. His wife thought that if he hadn’t been wearing a helmet he wouldn’t have broken his neck.

    It was quiet drive home.

Inheritance tax planning? Mortage provisions? Maintaining insurance cover. Are the titles to both houses properly registered already? Capital gains tax?

I’m sure a lawyer could think of a few more.

For God’s sake get a lawyer involved.

Please. Otherwise it’ll all end in tears.

I make that about a 3% annual return.
Plus you may be liable for capital gains tax.

Doesn’t sound like a huge return to me.

How is the housing market going to get going again (all be it never at the ridiculous pace that it was) if the initial deposits for first time buyers is going to be so high?

Perhaps by prices dropping so far that first time buyers will be able to afford a reasonable deposit?

I do not see what his being “educated” or not has to do with anything. The OP states that he is ignorant of Sri Lankan politics. Presumably this chap wasn’t, and felt strongly about it. Presumably, apparently unlike the OP, he was also familiar with the example of buddhist self-immolation protests against the Vietnam war.

And this chap was clearly aware of the fact that self-immolation protest against the Vietnam war was famously by a Buddhist monk and that he feels that by repeating the act he makes a similar and unmistakable point to the Buddhist Sinhalese majority in Sri Lanka.

You might find the D300 getting more affordable if a replacement is announced in the next few months :-)

Lorax if you haven’t read Thom Hogan’s reviews of both cameras then you should. It’ll take a few hours mind.

    D90
    D300

“D90 Metering and focus not state-of-the-art. A step forward from the D80 in both regards, but the D300 is better at both.”

    donald

    I have experience of neither!

But the D90 shares the same sensor as the D300 so it should have pretty much the same image quality. It probably has better JPGs straight from camera as Nikon will have tweaked the image processing algorithms in the time between launch. Anyway there’ll be nothing significant in it.

So the big difference will be in usability. It’s up to you to decide whether the price difference is worth it.

Personally I wouldn’t upgrade at all. There’s no way I’m forking out to upgrade every generation of DSLR. I’m still on the D70 and waiting another generation at least before I change it. I’m interested to see what the successor to the D300 is like though.

Parents at 13 and 15. What a ridiculous situation to be in.

I suspect that if you look at the entire history of human existence, 15 would be a fairly average age to have ones first child.

13 is a bit precocious though, I don’t think I could talk to girls at that age.
