    Sounds plausible, thanks.

Swelling is usually a sign of injury or infection. Swelling causes a lack of oxygen to local tissues which creates cellular damage.

Why does the body do it then?

finbar was clearly not slowed down by his enormous manhood.

Most normal people would struggle to get ready in time. You run the risk of injury IMO.

One thing I’ve never understood that maybe someone can help with.

Swelling is part of your body’s defence response to injury. As a machine tuned by millions of years of evolution it probably knows what it’s doing and swelling must be part of the natural healing process. Why do we attempt to artificially reduce swelling?

4 times. Twice skiing, once falling off “The Cobbler” and once falling off a chair

The longer the rest you give it (i.e. several months) the better the chance of it healing properly and not becoming a recurring problem.

If it does become a recurring problem then surgery is the only option – but it is usually quite successful.

You should get medical advice about this.

Stoner is correct. You have no Capital Gains liability. You may have to do some paperwork to prove this if you fill out a tax return.

    Quite bad.

But if it’s sunny and/or windy then it won’t be bad.

Mains gas is always the cheapest.

LPG is almost always the most expensive.

    We’re on LPG :( and wood :-)

Electricity is more expensive than gas and there’s more to do than just replacing a boiler

I’d recommend going to a sports injuries clinic for a diagnosis. They are usually very good at this sort of thing.

To pre-empt the helmet debate it sounds like it might have been a pre-existing condition. If that’s the case then a helmet might have postponed the problem but it would likely have made itself known in due course.

I go through an insurance broker.

It doesn’t seem to be a problem getting insurance for a listed building.

However we have problems getting quotes because of the subsidence/underpinning that was done before we bought it.

what are the bad points to wearing a helmet

There is a school of thought that they can cause a broken neck, in an otherwise unremarkable accident.

My government isn’t. Mind you, they’re suggesting a slightly lower tariff or around 40p.

Excellent – I’m going to open an offie in Gretna.

I use a £40 electric one from Aldi for chopping up firewood. If it’s occasional use round a garden then that’s probably all you need.

On a safety note the electric cable makes them really awkward to juggle with.

Donald, how exactly can you guarantee that they did?

Do you honestly think they didn’t? How could you be involved in something like that and having a few spare quid in your pocket not chip in. If they were the type of person to do that then they wouldn’t be there in the first place. Of course if they state the fact that they give to charity then someone will rip into them for advertising their selflessness.

To be honest Donald I’d be more worried about how the child was feeling than the Celeb.

As would I. But I wouldn’t class either as “fun”.

Why not sponsor them to stay on and help in the hospital for a week rather than bogging off up a mountain?

OK Here’s how it works. The people who are good at saving babies work in the hospitals. The people who are good at raising money raise money. Making documentaries to demonstrate the suffering in Africa is very worthy but how much money will it raise? Chris Moyles can do ten times more good by climbing a hill than he can by working in a hospital.

You call watching a child die in a hospital and vomiting through your nose fun?

What makes you think they didn’t put their hands in their pockets anyway. I can guarantee they all did.

WOW – sudden flashback to childhood holidays. Why do they have such a distinctive smell? Some unhealthy plasticiser no doubt.

Good effort. It’s not easy to do and for all of them to get to the top in 7 days was remarkable. I have been to that altitude and it’s not easy. To carry on climbing when you’ve had vomit coming out of your nose is a pretty good effort for a wee lassie.

Particularly impressed by the fat bloke actually.

It was probably -20 but no way was it 75mph. You can barely stand up in that and at those temperatures exposed flesh would freeze in minutes.

No I haven’t had any sort of crisis. But at the age of 38 I did decide to do something I would always be able to look back on with a sense of accomplishment so I climbed a very big mountain.

It was quite a big deal to me at the time. I probably won’t do anything like it again and I’m very glad I did it.

Balerno/Currie/Juniper Green/Colinton are all an easy drive – if she can get parked. There’s a train station at the Gyle so that opens things up.

And, er, are we likely to encounter any problems, her being English?

Only when you next win the world cup. So no, not really.

They are surprisingly good for grilling aubergines.

Nothing worse than a soggy moussaka.
