We still have a reciprocal health care arrangement with the EU. I would get insurance for a ski/climb/mountain bike holiday in Europe but I wouldn’t bother for an ordinary sightseeing or cycle touring trip.

“He is exceedingly unlikely to pay capital gains tax, there is a separate and substantial tax free allowance every year”

    It’s been reduced to £3000

ns&i won’t let me log on. I’m going to assume I’ve won the big one and they want to tell me in person.

I think that “generally accepted as a good thing” is still quite a high bar to aim for. In the real world there are always drawbacks to any course of action.

Anyway I’d suggest the 2015 Pension ‘freedom’ changes were generally a good thing – even if it could have been done better.

I’ve passed through on a cycle tour. I’m afraid I’ve not idea about the mountain biking but I can confirm it’s very pretty. The popular thing to do seemed to be rafting/kayaking down the river through the town combined with drinking beer. Looked fun on a sunny day. You’ve got proper hills to the south so biking might be good. Na zdraví

Stay at least one night in a Ryokan.
Obviously visit Kyoto. I slightly prefered the Silver Temple to the Golden Temple.
Nara is well worth a visit.
I’ve visited Himeji-jo and found it interesting if it fits in your itinerary.
I didn’t get out into the countryside much sadly

I was 5 months old when the Berlin Wall was built and 28 years old when it came down. You didn’t learn about it in history, it was contemporary politics and geography. I can’t believe there is anyone of my age with any curiosity about the world that didn’t know where West Germany/East Germany/West Berlin/East Berlin lay on a map and who ran them.

My uncle once bought a house without telling his wife because he knew she’d veto it.

    Turned out ok eventually 🙂

I don’t know what the Russians plan to put up into orbit but if its a chunk of Plutonium then what happens when it burns up on re-entry which it eventually will if never used.

How are you holding the cash? Have a look at money market funds. Basically you will be getting the interest rates banks can get as opposed to what they give to clients, with a risk rating of 1 they are considered the safest place possible and currently paying 4-5%.

    A word of caution…

    Mari is pronounced Mari
    Mhari is pronounced Vari

In the original Gaelic Mhari is how you would address someone called Mari ie the same name but a different (vocative) case. English speakers have turned it into a whole new name.
