I have a front Deore M475 disc-hub with a Mavic XM117 v-brake rim that weighs 925g. A good lightweight front will weigh under 750g.my point exactly, 175g for how much money? unless your wheels are fcked spend the cash on tyres tubes etc will save you more weight v cash.
at the end of the day if you want clicky hubs buy them, it is part of the fun of bikingdohFree Membershimano hubs are much cheaper, lighter and spin more freely, although they dont make the stupid/nice clicky noise. even if you have deore hubs on 117 rims i dont think there will be much difference between those and the hope options above^^, do some research easy enough to compare.
nice wheels are nice but are the same as any bike part you will spend an ever increasing amount of £ to get an ever decreasing amount of weight.
apart from the above the obvious things that no one pointed out is the cotic is steel(heavy) what do your friends ride if it is heavy in comparison and what fork have you got on it. might be better to invest in forks than wheels.dohFree Memberpeople that complain of chain cleaning, the scottoiler is your friend.
wiping off dog poo is not maintenance in the absense of a hose are you not able to devise something that can spray water to remove the poo? c’mon.
cup and cone hub servicing is one of my favourite bike things to do, cheap as chips and as easy as tying shoelaces.
avid brakes are a needlessly over complicated pain in the hole to be honest though.

Awesome. Wonder if the SAS / specials ops do this sort of thing? Gotta be a good way of sneaking behind enemy lines. Not sure I could picture Rambo doing it though.they might be mad but they are not stupid 😉
HALO and HAHO already do the job. + adding tons of eqp might spoil the “fun” of skimming mountain tops and flying down valleys.recently watched a couple of docs on more4, the 1st about an american wingsuit flyer/basejumper and his exploits blew me away. the footage of his mate hitting the bridge like a guided missle is just surreal and awful. the other about a basejump junkie out most nights in central london really caught my imagination though(i hate heights). a world removed from what most people would call the “extreme” sports of mtn biking snowboarding etc.
dohFree Memberthe specialized contour(funny shaped) ones helped my sore hands a lot more than the other big grips i tried.
dohFree Memberlezyne all the way, well made, well designed and bombproof, parts can be bought easily although not needed to yet in 2yrs. has a proper screw on connection and not a stupid flippy lever mechanism and that is the weak point that breaks in most pumps.
the bike radar review says all.
edit i mean the minipump, not tried the minifloor type one.dohFree Memberon one of his shows stewart maconie explained why it will prob never happen, the main reason is that they signed a bullet proof contract in their early days for several albums and amazingly it was agreed that they would take larger royalties from tape and record sales but none from cd sales, just at the time when cd’s started to take off. the label to this day can re-re-re release the albums and compilations and don’t have to pay a penny in royalties. the band dont get on due to the fact it was brown (i think) that pushed for this deal that screwed them all out of a lot of money.
don’t know how much of it is true but it is a good story at least.

any chance of a link etc
dohFree MemberAs far as I understand it, if you are over 30/31 you have to have a company offer you a job and be willing to sponsor your work visa.
I would be happy for someone to prove otherwise as I would love to move there permanently, but being a 30 + architectural technician means that I need a company to give me a job before they will let me into the country, which is easier said than done from here in the UK.
that is what i kinda figured, being over 30 and wanting a visa is sort of an egg and chicken thing most places want you to have a visa to apply and i need a job to get a visa.
dohFree Memberit was more to get a resort job and spend this winter boarding and then summer biking about the place. got a mate who is now a resident in BC would be staying with him and he says work is no prob just that the visas for me (over 30) look a bit more geared towards “proper” jobs
dohFree Memberforgot to add the hard rubber grips are even worse in winter + no insulation. the spec defroster prob has the cali sense of cold in mind.
dohFree Member[list]my specialized defroster boots, very waterproof boots although the almost solid hard rubber tread and solid plastic sole are lethal on wet rock+roots if not carefull and no insulation not so good for winter.5/10. 5 for lightness and general waterproofness. never had a pair of shoes that caused more concern under foot. a set of wheelies would prob be better in any condition.
keep my feet dry though 😕dohFree MemberCougar – Member
Given that a parsec is a measure of distance and not time, I think we can safely conclude that, er, Han Solo was full of shit.ah yes, you are truly wise in the ways of family guy.
as anyone knows family guy quotes can usually end any argument.
does that make me a double negative?dohFree Memberas far as i know they are saying within the loop it appears it went +speed of light but as they are scientists they are saying just that.”appears”
until someone atually replicates the same thing with diff equipment it is an anomaly(sp) and they are happy with thatmuch the same as they found that particles could transportate(sp)(like the fly) a few years ago.
dohFree Memberonly STW could make easy and enjoyable into an insult 🙂 . never said entourage is great just i quite like it, for the swearing and hot women mostly. although a bit self knowing still better than a lot of the more popular crap out there.
everybody loves raymond and two and a half men are award winning highest viewed prog’s in USA. utter utter sheeite.dohFree Memberthat japanese no brand shop(?) used to sell shaft drive bikes about 20yrs ago.
2wheel drive is the future(also done many years ago)
dohFree Memberendura are good for the price but details like only one popper on the shorts brings them down a bit(i have a bit of a gut) and the crap belts/buckles they have too.
only one purchase but my gore gloves where only matched by specialised for falling apart and general crapness and cost a lot more.dohFree Membercramps, b52’s, clash, devo, dead kennedy’s, siouxsie and pil in my ipod at the mo.
dohFree Memberwhen you say trails what do you mean, there is several miles of newish 6ft wide grey gravel stuff in the area or have you seen something a bit more interesting. i think a lot of it was put in about the time the falkirk wheel opened.
dohFree Memberread on the web that there is a reward to replace the recently removed info about M.Khan with a new one stating he still is 😀
dohFree Memberalways found vans style trainers best for flying, flat sole lets you slide under power while grippy boots mean a lot more force is needed to get you moving hurting your knees/legs
dohFree Memberwouldn’t bother with a 2 line, once you know what you are doing a 4 line is more controllable and is much easier to launch/relaunch by yourself. would prob also go bigger 3-4m will be more usefull in a wider wind range.
try ebay for flexifoil or ozonedohFree Membera lot of the mainstream stuff is going/gone the way of prog rock, overinflated unlistenable undanceable guff.
hopefully something new will form and leave all the big artists in the weeds.dohFree Member2 months free after about 15yrs daily and have cut the booze back to once/twice a week. the world is a nicer place now.
just need to knock the fags on the head now.dohFree Member+1 for lezyne it has a proper screw on connector and is well made. “old” design but it works very well and should last.
have went through many pumps with the stupid flippy lever smart connector head type thing that always breaks in one way or another eventually.dohFree Memberim free tomorrow during the day for a few hours if you want a guided tour of some local stuff.
dohFree Membera lot of people don’t rate it but i like most of the WHW and have done it as a whole and as single sections over the years, all weather with no map reading needed and well spaced rest stops.
i would say S->N. although you lose a lot of “gnar” by climbing/pushing devils staircase and the path out of kinlochleven you gain mostly longer faster smoother desents. and you end up in the highlands not in milngavie.unless you really want to say you have done the full thing i would start in crainlarich as the previous 50miles are not worth it for the hard work along a lot of lomond and the boring farmtracks leading to it.
unless you are super fit the 50miles from crainlarich to FW would be tough for most in a day never mind the full 100.
if you have 3 days free (40-50miles a day)i would suggest the cairngorm circuit instead, not as tough and still very good.

You’re right about best before dates, although the health implications of eating something that will never rot is not well understood.eh?
high sugar/salt foodstuffs dehydrate bacteria. this kills the bacteria.
a principle used by mankind for millenia with no problems, also the rather thick plastic used for gels should help keep the bugs out 😉
they might change in consistency and taste over the years but it would be pretty hard to make it any worse. as long as it is still sealed i would have no problem eating an old gel or bar. (not so sure about a vintage marathon though)not wanting to start a new argument but why does bottled water have a best before then?
dohFree Memberbought a vango helium 100 (1.1kg) over a year ago with about 3-4weeks spent in it. summer/autumn use mainly but it has put up with very heavy rain for days on end and winds up to 50mph with no problems at all. the only thing bringing it down is at 6ft i sometimes feel a wee bit cramped lying down at full stretch but other than that it is pretty good for a small light tent.
i heard on here some shop selling was selling them for £100ish, cheap enough so you can buy two and have somewhere safe to stow your bike away from all those thieving sheep/deer etc that can be found behind almost every tree 🙄

why is MTBing largely white?
I always wondered about this in the context of hill-walking, climbing, paddling, in fact just about all outdoor leisure activities I’ve been doing.
Any research/theories about this?
i think this is largely down to how people are introduced to any passtime, most people gain this introduction through a friend/relative that already has some experience. without an established base of people doing something and the acceptance that goes with it it must be pretty hard to get someone from a minority into something that is not normally part of their community.
horse riding seems to have many parallels to mtb, lots of maintenance, dirty and sweaty with an element of risk and danger so why is it a mainly female thing to do?

800 miles out of a chain? What are you ridding in?!lots of scottish lovelyness.
800 miles for a chain good or bad ❓
chain changed when it gets between 0.75 and 1 on the chain gauge.
