Resurrecting this thread with an outcome.
Dropped him off yesterday, at a place in cowcaddens he found on spareroom.com last week. £600 a month in a 2 bed with a stranger. Less than three minutes walk to uni though so will defo do for now. The last few weeks have been a bit of a nightmare, accommodation is so hard to find up there. Last time I have to do that hopefully!

this was my lad’s pad for 2 years… he paid £118/week £507 a month bills included. It’s now £60 a month without bills… so yeah it’s the same everywhere

He’s found a few options around this price in garnethill. Just needs someone to live with now…

Righto, I think he’s expecting a room in a shared house to be fair. Doesn’t know anyone up there to flat share with, just has a mate from school in Edinburgh, other than that we’ve some distant relatives in Kilmarnock and an old uni mate at Lochwinnock but I think that would be a bit of a stretch!

useful info to mull over, thanks everyone

Thanks for all the tips peeps. I can see this will be a bit of task for us to sort out. He’s doing the masters part time over 2 years and planning to get a job for several days a week, but even that won’t cover some of these rentals being quoted! He’s at Glasgow school of art not the uni of, so I’m not sure what difference that makes. I did mention scholarships to him so I’ll mention that again, thanks for the tip… and I’ll show him that Govan bridge link…

Loads more seated tickets than standing available for blur. I’d much prefer to stand. Standing tickets always sell out first in my experience. Depends on the artist/audience I guess.

I suppose the “best” seats are harder to come by. Hadn’t really looked where they are. Colleague at work just nabbed a seated ticket for pulp on Friday 14th in what she says is a good area. No standing tickets for sale at the moment.

It’s definitely fomo in our house!

I wasn’t meaning to dig at people buying tickets on presale. Have done it myself in the past for eg the cure, just really pleasantly surprised how tickets for sold out concerts are available a few days before for a smidge over face value now. Surprised viagogo can stay in business

    So when is the concert?

I’ve no interest in seeing foo fighters just find it interesting recently that with all these scrambles for tickets on day of release months ahead how easy it has been to get gig tickets close to the event from twickets.
Seems lots of people must panic by as the fomo is so strong then have to change their plans.
We got tickets for pulp at Sheffield arena on the day they went on sale then our plans changed so have sold them on, wife going with her mate the night before and I fully expect to be able to get a ticket to join them if I really want. My daughter bought arctic monkeys tickets via fan presale last year, we weren’t going to bother them there was so many offered for sale in the week or two before it seemed rude not to… and I stood next to a couple who had bought their Tickets at 3 o’clock that afternoon. Today I bought two standing tickets for blur at Wembley a week on Saturday. Face value plus 10%. I’d sooner have the money in my account for 9 months than rush to buy in future I think!🤷🏼‍♂️

Well I was really impressed with speakers corner quartet at glasto on the iPlayer. Recommended by my son who is very into nuskool jazz and had a listen to their album as I drove him back from uni in manc yesterday. They are a 4 piece (well obviously!) with guest collaborators such as Kae Tempest on vocals and shubaka Hutchings on sax and other instruments. The drummer/percussionist seems to be the main guy and he had a really curious arrangement of home made instruments rigged up to a drum pad. One appeared to be made from a skateboard deck. Rhythmically very clever. Awesome bass player. Very south London but don’t hold that against them!

Hmm yeah midges. I thought heading east might be sensible for less midges. Is that not the case?
other option would be to head to Dumfries and Galloway is that a better idea?

The picture shows maxxgrip. Think I’ll order one and see what comes. If it’s maxxterra it can go on the back if it’s maxxgrip I’ll try it on the front… do we rate dhr2 as a front tyre?

    docrobster

So what’s the difference between 3c maxterra which I have this tyre in already but is out of stock, and 3c triple compound?

edit I thought the options were maxxterra and maxxgrip both of which are 3c triple compound? This is just CRC poor labelling isn’t it?

I’ve got those slx 7120 165mm cranks for 55mm chainline on my aether9. They just have a longer spindle and two more spacers than the 7100 52mm chainline version.
I fitted them with one spacer from the drive side on the nds to move the chainline back in to 52mm.

Unknown mortal orchestra at the Albert hall Manchester last night with my lad and his girlfriend, her parents, sibling and sibling’s boyfriend. Top night. Lovely venue. My god it was hot in there though! Also weird with all the stained glass it was so light inside.

Conversely for the Arctics in Sheffield last weekend the organisation was really good. Loads better than tramlines at the same venue. I parked a 20 minute walk away for free. 20 minutes after entering I had 2 pints in my hand (wife was driving).
Miraculously didn’t need a pee till the end and no queue then. Got food as everyone was leaving. Back at the car for 11.15 and home 10 minutes later. There were trams running and my daughter got one into town after to go to the leadmill (no trams during tramlines weekend- teh ironing)we were pretty much smack bang in the middle of the crowd and sound was great. Don’t think I need to see them again now, that experience can’t be topped…

however worth remembering that the OP is guarantoring the tenancy (which is not that unusual these days) and probably putting up the deposit (which some students treat as disposable!) also GenZ children don’t like talking on the phone to strangers and have no patience for waiting in customer service queues

indeed- I made sure to remind my kids I want all the deposit back and any shortfall is on them. They don’t like phoning people up but landlords prefer email anyway and it’s also got an audit trail so seems the way to go.
they aren’t children though are they?

Actually having typed the bit about my lad’s half rent thing I may have misremembered. I think he could move his stuff in on the first day of the contract but not sleep there- hence the rent reduction. To have a tenancy agreement but no access on day 1 I would have thought they’d need to refund the whole rent for that period. He was a bit peed off cos he wanted a few weeks in manc partying and was deprived of this. My tiny violin got used quite a bit. Anyway he’s back in a few weeks and I’m looking forward to going riding and bouldering with him. He’s a different person to when he went in the first covid year, got locked in his halls all that rubbish.
If anyone has any interest in art student degree shows and is in manny before the 21st of this month, pop in to the benzie building and go up to the 8th fooor and tell me what you think it all means…🤔😂

similar gen-xer here, I’m 53, but did rent for several years at uni, doing medicine, a lot of short term contracts. It’s very different now… I remember signing 3 post dated checks for the day after the grant came in each term…! And certainly no guarantors, it was all on us. The houses were shit tips though that wouldn’t be rentable now.

my kids are coming out the other side of uni renting. Daughter in Newcastle and son in manc. They both did one year in halls, 2 years private rented and I signed up as guarantor. Daughter’s rentals all went off ok, got their deposits back, had the odd thing fixed. No issues.
Son is coming to the end of two years in a rented 7 bed house in withington this month. They’re all art students. I’m anxious about the deposit. He’s the only one that seems to put the bins out etc etc.

When they moved in they were offered half rent for the first couple of weeks to delay moving in as the landlord was doing some work, basically fitting a new kitchen. This was a minor pita as he had to come home with all his stuff for a period of time and then go back. The two weeks became 4 though so they all got some money back. He also managed to get a rental with bills included so no issues with meter readings, and signed up to year 2 just before the energy price shit hit the fan so has had an excellent deal for the last year. They had someone who dropped out of uni and stop paying rent for a few months and the landlord made it their responsibility to find another tenant. I was waiting to be told I was liable for some of this rent but that never happened. Luckily the landlord’s agent was a decent bloke who treated them like adults and they seem to have been able to sort out any issues in the way. My lad even got gifted an electric guitar and amp as the agent needed to get rid of some stuff.
Regarding delaying moving in for a month- I expect your offspring are still liable for the bills so no advantage there, unless the landlord wants it empty like ours did.
My advice- let the kids sort this stuff out themselves. They both soon got very good at knowing their rights around rental contracts deposits etc. As long as your kid’s rent is paid I wouldn’t sweat the rest of it.

Yeah my money is on a leak. I’ve just sent a 10 month old deore 4 pot caliper back as it developed these symptoms but would improve after the first decent descent once it was hot. The pads seemed sticky on one side so I think the opposing pads were coming out further and seeping oil. With pads out if you pump the lever do both pads move ok?
I watched a video where they cleaned the outside of the pistons and removed a lot of built up crud which will probably lead to tiny leaks. If they are out of warranty that might be worth a try?

Another recommend what you have here for a bird aether 9 here.
I’m 5’11” with average proportions and ride a ml size which has 420 seat tube 484 reach. I’ve got a 200mm drop brandx with the collar a couple of cm clear of the seat clamp. A 210 one up would fit but I’m not convinced a 240 would due to the cable entry port being a little but too high.

We had this recently in my practice. Patient emailed us a copy of his certificate to be signed. He tells us he’s training for the marmotte. Was surprised when we declined. Apparently his mate’s gp in the next village signed it no bother. His mate’s gp is the sort that gets us in bother as a profession by working for free (aka wasting nhs resources).
I remember the plaque in the cobbles at the top of some hill in Belgium- forget which one – maybe kwaremont? That I saw back in 2018 commemorating the 40 something English bloke who died during some sportive or other….

Anyway one of the docs does some sports medicine and is happy to do it in his own time and bill the patient separately. That’s up to him. Personally I’m not interested in taking the liability. The patient thinks nothing will happen. The grieving family might see it differently.

My mate is doing the marmotte this year. Asked him who signed his form. He said my wife did… he was joking. Probably one of the medics in his roadie club. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Arctic monkeys last night. 40000 people singing along slightly out of time and very out of tune. Apart from that it was great and so much better than last time I saw them. The hives were a great support band too. S6 is a happy place this month.

Oh yeah it’s parklife this weekend isn’t it. We are travelling to manc on Sunday for my son’s degree show. Cousin in the midlands thinking of getting train to manc and meeting us there. Trains are all ££££ so she’s coming to Sheffield and cadging a lift with us instead. Trainline app Waring if crowded trains due to parklife.  Glad to hear it’s going to be even more mental on Sunday…

When we went to the 6 music festival a few weeks back to a gig on Saturday night at Victoria warehouse I prebooked a spot on the quays on someone’s carport for less than the multi-storey would have cost. I’ll see if I can find the link

edit- it was done through the JustPark app. It was on Winnipeg quay. If you search fir Salford quays parking on the days and times you want it will give you options. Assuming they’ve not all been booked up of course…

edit edit- soccer aid is this Sunday the 11th not the 19th? Typo? Quays parking this Sunday seems sold out on the app. Salford it is then?

    Sounds ace.
Sounds kinda like the ride I had on Sunday on win hill. Big climb up from hope with gorgeous blue sky. Dive down the trails in the woods for a bit then back out and up to the top and do the same again with different trails. Only I took a wrong turn which lead me down a rubbish descent to a long fire road type climb so I missed some prime trails out.
Being shown the best trails and guided where to go for £30 seems pretty good value. Shame I live too far away.

Signal is shorter reach than the corresponding seat tube length of a bfe I think from memory. At 5’8” I’d say go medium for sure though. My mate is 6” on a large signal ti. It is not too small for him. If you want really long reach and wheelbase and a shorter seat tube and a pinion frame then maybe 18 bikes can help?

Why not demo the medium? You might find it’s a good fit.
