Move house, that focuses the mind!

We just did! Going up one in number of bedrooms. The storage isn’t as good here…yet. I don’t want to store junk though

OP here, wood it is then….

I see we went via the eggs in fridge debate. The difference is due to how Salmonella is reduced. My understanding is, in the UK chickens are vaccinated against it so no need to wash/sterilise the eggs before sale. UK eggs can be kept out of the fridge. In the US they don’t vaccinate and wash the eggs to kill/remove Salmonella instead. This means though that the eggs have to be refrigerated because the eggs are now permable and various bacteria can get inside.

If a plastic chopping board starts to mark up badly, bin (recycling bin)

Possibly wishful thinking that it’ll actually be recycled…

Where are you? Shipping could become a major part of the shed cost. You might have someone local who can build and install one.

For central belt Scotland I recommend Paterson Garden Buildings.

    an end grain wooden board

Yes I think so. I’d also like something kept specifically for meat/fish too. Possibly not wood

Erebus watches appear to be the sum of their parts. They’ve been designed by putting together “best bits” from other watches or to fix niggles from experience. They don’t have a wow factor for me.

Also my parents have had this done. They are currently cognitive enough to sort it out themselves… they haven’t done anything yet.

There are probably as many cowboys removing foam as putting it in so tread carefully

I did find a company who vacuum it out. They appear to be credible https://www.vac-xtract.co.uk/spray-foam-removal/

If you do accept the £15k drop, make it conditional on absolving you of any further indemnity for the roof, even if there are issues unrelated to the foam.

I have a Yakima High Road. It’s nice and their stuff is on par, if not better than, Thule. Got it from the Roof Box Company

Check it can take your bike though, wheel base length etc.

Business sellers only – a huge percentage of the cheap, explod-ey tat on ebay is being sold by business sellers who are getting it en-mass from China

Hopefully eBay’s next step is to clamp down on this. Seems a logical progression

Angle-grinder proof bike racks are a thing. E.g. run a chain through the inside of a Sheffield bike rack. Whether anyone does I don’t know.

Didn’t get this at first, but I see now. They can’t remove the chunk that they cut out. What spurred me on for the second lock is a video I saw of someone cutting a Sheffield bike rack with a pipe cutter and lifting the bike off. No angle grinder required.

Most (all?) brokers get their fee from the mortgage provider. You shouldn’t need to pay them anything directly.

Having recently moved, I used a broker and I think it was a lot less hassle than dealing with providers directly. We were able to switch potential provider very quickly when a new offer was announced. In the end we got a mortgage from my own bank. I didn’t deal with my bank though, still used the broker. This was because the broker did the entire application in about an hour on the day the new deal was announced. My bank wanted me to setup an appointment, come in blah, blah, blah. I think there would have been a real chance of missing out on the deal doing it that way.

The angle grinder locks are a nice idea but for a fatal flaw. Unfortunately, the railing/pole/bike park you lock it to isnt angle grinder proof.

Not sure about it being a flaw. It’s moved the weakest link elsewhere. This is exactly why I’m looking for a secondary lock, to go through the frame and rear wheel. After what you’ve highlighted and working through the possible scenarios it has to be another angle grinder proof lock.
E.g. if they’ve got an angle grinder and they can cut whatever the bike is attached to, then they’re going to be able to make short work of a Hiplok Chain or a Litelok Core if that’s used on the frame

Great to hear from someone who has both, thanks!

I’ve realised there could be a flaw with my thinking. If I’m using the lock to go through the frame and wheels then do I really want to be wearing it after?

some places say that the expansion tank might need re-pressurising – and its this that makes me think it might be a worthwhile exercise – but maybe not yearly – maybe it could be done every few years?

They use a Schrader valve so it is DIYable in theory. You also need to check the membrane is intact. With a faulty one water will come out of the valve when depressed

Leaky old 1970’s pipe system, needs topping up every couple of months

Just be aware that you’re diluting the system water each time, possibly reducing inhibitor effectiveness, which could lead to other issues. Depends just how often and how much the top ups are.

Gas central heating systems are not fit and forget. They need regular checks to ensure they are functioning properly. Some of these you can do yourself, e.g. checking pressures and bleeding radiators. Perhaps even system water quality.
My main concern is that it’s not leaking gas or CO and not about to catch fire. Plus a service record is likely part of any warranty or might need to be evidenced for a home insurance claim. Hence we have someone look at it, just in case.

OP here, been following a low FODMAP diet since last week now. I was pretty sure I was lactose intolerant but now I think it’s more than that.

There’s definitely been a change in how I feel. I’ve effectively stopped eating refined carbs which is probably no bad thing in itself. I wonder if it is related to sugar for me, lactose being just one of those that are problematic.

I feel calmer overall too, it’s actually a bit strange

Not much due to kids (two under 6yrs) and having ADHD (a recent revelation). ADHD gifts you the paradox of absolutely needing structure to your life but also hating structure in any form.

I’ve been on 2 mountain bike rides this year, both were Enduro events! The only other time I ride bikes is nursery runs or occasional commutes to the office

Organising anything in the future is difficult if I am the one organising it. I mainly just concentrate on getting through each day. Family life means I cannot just do things on the spur of the moment any more. Even then pre-family, I’d spend most of the time procrastinating before finally getting to the trail centre at 4.30pm on a Saturday and trying to get round before it gets too dark. I also don’t socialise with my own friends, mostly only tagging on to what my wife has organised.

Any free time I do get can result in me wanting to do literally everything and ending up doing nothing. Or I get really focused into something, run out of time to finish it and then never complete it (because I don’t pick it up again).

I really like running but cannot turn it into a daily routine (true of most things). The problem is motivation (well actually it’s dopamine). If we go away on holiday I often go out on runs, because it’s somewhere new to explore. Back home, I’ve run all the routes already. I know running clubs exist, but I found these are either too focused on competitive events, or drinking (see hashing). I just need organised fun.

A friend sold their home with a leaking boiler. They artfuly placed a cookbook to hide the bowl that was catching all the water that was leaking out of it. Couple of days after the buyer found out, lost their shit and attempted to go legal on my pal. Didn’t go anywhere cos Caveat Emptor

In Scotland you can come back on certain things within 5 working days of the sale, the heating system being one of them. Seems to be a standard clause here.

Pragmasis’s shed shackle can be used in metal sheds.

The 3x one is too small for 3 modern geometry MTBs. Two should fit ok I think, but others can confirm. The roof has a lip so you can’t bolt through the rear to a wall. You can go through the floor (will void the rust proof warranty, maybe only for that panel if Asgard are pragmatic about it). You’re best using a removable anchor like the Double Doofer (Unfortunately Pragmasis are closing down).
It’s debatable that an anchor would be needed though. If they had the tools to get into the shed then chains aren’t going to offer that much more resistance.
Adding an alarm to it (and linked to a house alarm). Might be a way to tamperproof it but false alarms are probably quite likely.

You could put the metal shed inside your garage… but there’s an argument that this could be less secure as the shed could be worked on out of sight.

All very high end and futuristic

I did find my first use quite underwhelming. Very much “ooh green lines! Ah wait, so I have to faff about with a tripod/clamp/ladder to get the horizontal line exactly where I want it”. Some slight naivity on my part too

Got a Bosch Quigo from Amazon Warehouse. Cheaper but not that cheap. I’m going to return it as (always) the condition description didnt match what arrived. I was able to try it out though.

Downsides are small axis adjustment is limited to one axis and is done via the clamp. Doesn’t seem like you can lock it, although if you tilt beyond its self leveling range it sort of locks.

Any recommendations for one with the following:

    Green laser
Two axis micro adjustment (can be the clamp that’s fine with me)
    Locking
Probably only need 2 lines and not 360

However, my strategy on tools now is to buy pro quality (via eBay if you can find in good condition) and then sell again

Ask for the original receipt or invoice if buying from eBay. This can help avoid buying stolen goods.
Some car boot sales only allow selling of power tools if the seller has an invoice.
