Who gives a shit about trail centres ? The peaks aren’t a trail centre, since when has Monthly Boring Reader had any form of say in where to ride ?

Apart from the MBR Trail of course, 😳

I can recall it being about 88 or 89 ?
I think the tyres were called farmer johns or farmer johns cousin ?

Great whacking things they were up front,

It should be an orange, at least that swing arm won’t rattle like they normally do !

It looks like an orange shock mounting fom the 222 – patriot – sub 5 era ?
The rear drop outs also look orange stylie but it does look shit !

Sorry for my Luddite none pragmatic response !

I thought it was a direct question ?

I.e. do you really need a thro axle for trail XC ?
As I said, I don’t think you do for trail or XC riding

I think you need a frame, forks, wheels, brakes a chain and some pedals, the rest is down to personal / rider preference
Bling and how much you want to look good.

Right I’m off out on my 160mm Santa Cruz, Kashima coated fox tapered wide barred 4 pot single ringed 10 speed SPD’d dropped posted mincing machine, none of which I need but all of which I wanted,

Ironic really cos I’m faster on my orange Hard Tail !

I dont think riding a trail centre you will notice that much difference if any ? if a suspension fork is needed at all at these places ?
If you rode somewhere more natural Like the Peak District, Wharncliffe, North of Scotland and probably some other places that i’ve failed to mention and others i’ve never heard of then threading your way across a “Rock Section” is more beneficial on a bike with a 20mm Thro axle, you would definately notice riding back to back comparisons,

As said, Disk brakes work and so did Canti’s so why folks had to jump on the V brake wagon is anybodys guess ?
Same with STI gears, why go for indexing when the old thumbies did the same job ?

    SPD’s, The Devils work,
Solvent based lube………… its progress, rightly or wrongly it drives the wheels and if it gives the end user a benefit then embrace it,

Is there any point in making the NOAMD 650b ? is that segment in the market not filled with the recent intro of the BRONSON ?

Like wise the SOLO ? why buy a SUPERLIGHT or BLUR in 650b when you can have the other ?

Orange have done the 5, Santa Cruz has now done the HECKLER, When and If the NOMAD goes 650b surely the V10 will get the same treatment ?

    I agree with nwill1

    Business is business !
My LBS is pish and at the end of the day £40 is £40, some on line retailers are even doing free returns which really screws the profit out of operating a shop,

It’s unfortunate I know but its a case of supply and demand,

i cant see the problem, its like riding in the Peaks and moaning about Horses, my personal feeling on this is Give Way ! or dont ride in the peaks unless you have your own piece of land and then you can moan all you like when a Dog gets on your trails, you could even shoot it and pretend it was worrying your sheep ?

I was told years ago that it was doled out in order of heirachy, walkers, horses, Cycles, and **** the Motorists.

dogs arent in that line up but are often accompanied by Walkers, horse rider types, and cyclists, Ive even seen some dogs in cars, or at least i think they were dogs ?

I suggest that if you feel so strongly about it that the next time you see a rabid pooch on your trails that you enquire as to its owner and tell him face to face.

Some dogs were bred specifically to Hunt !
Some of the hounds lead in the pack and the horses followed the hounds, Border Terriers, Patterdale Terriers were bred to follow the horse at the back of the pack if the fox went to ground,

If you think dogs arent up to it i personally think your very much mistaken, and to use an old cliche, its not the dogs fault if it doesent do as its told, sure they are bike specific areas but really who gives a **** ?

Sounds just like mine too ?
Fortunately for me I never listen to a word any one says and its unlikely that I’ll ever be swayed by the bright adverts and shiny new frames in both 26″ & 650b guises !

OP, what bike is it ?
Spesh enduro or an orange ?

Northwind, the old Moto-X chain prep, ive done that before, used to put it in a parrafin wax prep in a pan on a stove and warm it up, the ammount of crud that vame out of the links on a seemingly clean chain was unbeleivable,

Ive had a can of Putoline Moto-X Chain lube thats about a foot long for about 10 Years, i oil up my sons BMX and his MTB once a year and it Never ever shows signs of rust !
Ive thought about applying this to my SC Butchers chain as its a bit noisy,

Id just like to say that i thought it was only me who thought like that, 😳

“When i were a lad” in the 70’s 😳 all the rough kids on their nicked raleigh Olympic bikes with handlebars turned upside down could pop wheelies forever !
One lad at our school could wheelie 63 white lines in the street ! “there were less cars in those days”

I dare say it was these little fookers who used to hoopla tyres round lamp posts !
ANOTHER pass time i was shite at !

I found that Rock ‘n’ Roll provides little protection against rust but better than Wax

I’ll see what this new miracle Bike Medicine is like,

    discoduck
    Free Member

I’ve experimented with Wax and cant say that i enjoyed using it, audible graunching and a lack of rust protection,

I’ve used Rock ‘n’ Roll blue extensively and its good for a bit but fades out very quickly, on a long haul it needs re applying so it means carrying it with you which is often the case with most lubes.

I’ve swapped across to Purple Extreme and have been running this over the past 4 weeks in the dryest conditions i’ve experienced in the UK for some time, So i cant comment on wet wetaher usage but dry is exceptionally good,

I dont want to teach you to suck eggs so please forgive me if you follow this method already but i’ve found especially since i stopped using the Finish Line stuff about 3 years ago that if you apply the lube after a ride so its got time to go off before the next ride, ideally a day ? a lot of these solvent based remedies need to evapourate before riding.

It’s a wink, there’s a chap rides through the village where I live in one, he fills it out well ! He’s a big un !

His face is more contorted as he’s sucking in air from Guildford ! Not a pretty sight, but it keeps the kids amused as he passes them on the benches at the bus stop, they have to stop snogging to hurl abuse at him !

    It’s not pretty at all

Road bikers who don’t ride on the mountains don’t have soul!
Thats great. Ive ridden my road bike on loads of mountains though.

Having a soul sounds like the sort of thing a mountain biking mincer has.

Hard road riders have guts, determination, and massive balls.

Thank gawd I’m not a Hard Roadie ! My balls are allreet in baggy shorts ! If my cahunas were muhassive I’d have to strap em in with Lycra !

I think your right “rave reviews” get the ca$h tills ringing, it also pays for printing, editing, it gets the manufacturers wheels turning and the whole process evolves into something else,

I’m no expert on the bike industry but I do know that the lucrative secondhand market created by forums such as this and many others has meant that bikes don’t rot away in garages un used and un loved they are sold and moved on, which is great for the Rider, but not so good for the industry.

It’s like kick starting the banking sector but for the biking industry ?

Just to add my two penneths worth !

YES a DE razor is the only razor you will ever need, a newer one with some good weight in it will increase your precision and help you shave correctly, remember do not press on when shaving and go for a 3 pass shave
    1: with the grain
    2: against the grain
    3: across the grain

My favourite blades Gillette platinum blue if you can get them, if not persona medical prep !

    D. R. Harris shave cream
    D.R. Harris badger brush

Aqueous cream blathered on stubble straight after bath / shower
Put brush in sink with hot water to soften while in shower
    Apply cream shave

    Do the 3 pass shave

    Rinse in cold water
Apply either witch hazel or bay rum !

I bought a Gillette 1972 adjustable safety razor off eBay for about 200 last year as it was my 40th ?
Best razor I’ve ever used ! Precision accuracy
They don’t make the like that any more, the new razors are shite ! The first blade and the 3rd blade is blunt from the factory so it yanks the hair out exposing it for the other 4 or 5 blades to cut ?

I’ve found the persona blades last 3 or 4 good shaves
I bought a years worth of blades for a fiver !

Sure all the paraphernalia is a fortune but it makes shaving a whole lot more interesting !

Sorry wht was the question ?

If you haven’t done it then its definately one to tick off !
Its long and fast in places, peddaly in places, and a bit flowy in others, its not Wharncliffe in terms of technical ability but its good for a trail centre, or at least I think it is ?

I’ve come to realise that I’ve been into Bikes / Biking for quite some time !

I’ve already witnessed Flouro bikes once, now they are coming back round again, likewise and i’ve said it before on here but there are those that will remember the Raleigh Bomber, which was basically a Clunker and the pre requisite to MTB’ing !
That had wheels that were probably some where between a 26’er and a 29’er,

I feel old, and confused ! i’ve been riding santa Cruz bikes for nearly 15 years, i’m not sure i like the awkward looking none drive side brace and if i dont gain any more speed by riding 26″ wheels then i’ll be happy in the knowledge that theres no where in the Country i’ve not been on my 26″ wheeled steed !

I’ve scalped my knee cap down to bone ! I know exactly how frustrating the healing process is 🙁

The worst thing I found was that it kept sticking to the inside of my jeans / trousers or bed clothes
Best thing is the decent weathers here and shorts are good for exposing the flesh so try and leave it uncovered as much as possible, I bought a can of that savlon antiseptic spray that’s got iodene in it, the worst thing you want now is get an infection,

Mine gradually got smaller and smaller but as it was so deep the scab kept cracking and it blead all the time and seeped gunk out of it ! Eeeew

Also try and get some Ronda pads they are perforated dressings that have a cling film like side which stops the lint from sticking to it

    Good luck !

Looks like a PARK one then, everything else they do is excellent quality so there’s no reason why this one shouldn’t be.

It’s been a long time “15” years since I used a chain cleaner so they must have improved dramatically ?
Mine leaked and splashed everywhere so your decking is probably going to get an uneven covering of oily residue anyway ?

Keep us posted of you’re new purchase.

I know you said you you dont have right bottle / white spirits etc ?

But there is no way i would throw money at one of those devices, Petrol in an old chinky tray – scrub with old tooth brush and hang up for fuel to evapourate off the chain, pour Petrol thro a coffee filter into lawn mower and then apply a lube of your choice.

I think thats the idea !

They’ve licked the envelope that much things have probably progressed to a place where once upon a time they could only imagine such a thing was possible, and as they have sold us most other things we probably didnt need they have litterally re-invented the wheel ? bobbed on some bigger wheels and in doing so “hoped” no one would realise that putting bigger tyres on would have the same effect ?

they are all looking the same ? a bit like 25 years ago when the RALEIGH BOMBER with its big wheels was binned and this new MTB was the new kid on the block with its smaller wheels and extra long stem !

See, you’ve got me ranting now and i’m not a PREMIER subscriber either !
