Over torqued, where’s the evidence of that?

I’ve got three sets of carbon bars, they all have marks where the stem and levers have been attached, they have all been tightened to the manufactures specified torque.

I don’t think I’ve seen a set of carbon bars that have been fitted and don’t have some marks from the stem/lever interface, in most cases it’s light marking of the clearcoat and has no bearing on the integrity of the bars, so yes it’s normal ime.

OP Post some photos up if your unsure.

SLX have ceramic pistons which should equate to better heat management, not saying there’s anything wrong with Deore but worth taking into consideration.

I thought the torque spec came on the stem / shifters not the bar itself?

It does and its usually around 5 nm, no special torque for carbon, same as alloy bars and its dictated by the stem.

Got two sets, Easton Havens and old set of Monkeylights, can’t say they feel any different to alloy bars, just lighter.

If it feels too small then fitting a 50mm stem will only make matters worse.

Most people have one ISP, the IPs 81 and 109 would indicate two different service providors and probably raised suspicion.

IP’s starting with 81 are Virgin Medias, IP’s starting 109 are BTs.

From a practical point of view orange will stay looking nicer for longer, black looks good when it’s new but has a tendency to show up dirt and scratches(can look tatty pretty quickly) ime.

Assuming your BCD is 104, pretty much any 104BCD/50t ring should fit, doesn’t have to be Truvative.

*Another option would be to fit a Shimano Deore Triple 48/36/26.

*May need to change front mech and or left hand shifter depending on whats currently fitted.

the cam mechanism in the lever is just a very, very, very good idea… and easily outstrips the competition in terms of power.

Ironically its the non linearity of the cam mechanism that causes the lack of feel.

Could this be the reason SLX and XT are fitted with ceramic pistons?

I’ve got some old 525s and they don’t like getting too hot, they don’t pump up like yours, the power just fades away to nothing which makes me think its a caliper/piston heat managment issue, I assume there must be a reason for Shimano fitting ceramic pistons to other models.

    Would try a bleed first.

Your aware SKF make their own version of low friction seals?

I don’t know whether they’re any better than the ones they produce for Fox but no doubt worth a try.

I believe they’re available through South Coast Suspension.

DHF EXO front and rear or DHF EXO front and Ardent rear.

For general year round use I’ve not found anything better than a DHF for the front, I just change the rear according to conditions, Spesh Butchers are supposed to be comparible.

No doubt Shortys would give more purchase in gloopy conditions but would be a fair bit slower on dry hardpack, I’ve not used them myself but it’s prettty clear looking at the tread patterns.

Agree with stevied, didn’t get on with a HR on the rear as the ramped knobs mean they offer little when it comes to uphill traction, excellent braking performance though.

Wouldn’t reccomend taking up smoking though!

Reckon if I pack in smoking I might have another 20, possibly 30 years left. 😀

Was in the same predicament, went for Arch EXes in the end. Despite my 100kg mass they’ve held up fine and not needed any attention, although I’d like to think I had something to do with that as I built them.

Not sure Flows are any stronger, comparing the cross section of Arches with Flows they look identical, apart from the extra width of the Flow?

@dirtydog if I remove the damper and compress the fork, won’t oil shoot out the top?

Cartridge displaces a lot of oil, was thinking there might be enough room for the oil if the cartridge was removed. You’d have to try it and see, if you where to compress the forks slowly it would be easy enough to see if it was about to overflow.

    dirtydog

if I release all the air and compress the fork it is still about 3mm from bottoming out, which makes me think too much oil..

Remove the damper cartridge and try that ? again or try old cartridge and compare results.

The amount of oil sat on top of the air piston will affect travel too.

I imagine there would be a small difference in the amount of oil a cartridge would displace.

Dirty dog can you expand as to why please

On a double the outer rings chainline is biased towards the higher gears (smaller rings on cassette) , this gives a more extreme chainline (crossover) than a triple would when in lower gears (big rings on cassette).

Middle ring on a triple sits in the middle and is not biased one way or t’other.

    dirtydog

SLX triple, doesn’t seem a lot of point in XT if your ditching the rings, would avoid a double as chainline will be less than optimal.

Recommended 60″lbs resulted in it sticking half way, so tightened to 30″lbs.

60 foot pounds equates to 81nm, from what I remember reccomended torque is around 12nm, sure you haven’t bent something?

Last part of bleed should be done with speed adjuster in slowest position (wound out), if its not done this way post will be slow to return.

I think to get the most out of the Five you have to put a lot of body language into it, the more you put in the more you get out. Sometimes I can’t be arsed and it can come across as a bit meh, if your a lazy rider look elswhere. Imo of course.

Wrote that ? before I read that ?

Of course, in truth, it is neither, but it does seem to have what one recent magazine review called an increasingly rare quality, to feel better the harder you push it.

    Completely agree.

I wonder if these would work on a 26″ Five.

In terms of a to c I think they would be perfect, I run a Fox 36 at 150mm on mine, I think the pikes a to c is 5mm shorter which would be 5mm in the right direction imo.
