    Yes – RS-8

You can see a pair at the bottom right side of the picture.

Axle is fitted to left side crank arm. Has adjustable Q factor. Is a very nice setup.

    Hetchins.

They should be brought back by On One – as the technology is about the same :-)

There’s lots within easy striking distance of Annecy – such as Morzine etc.. but my suggestion would be to take your road bike.

The road biking in and around Annecy is excellent – Alpine climbs, passes, quiet roads, scene of epic battles in the Tour de France etc.

Plus, Annecy on a sunny weekend is a hotbed of roadie-ness. Lots of roadies out and about.

I’d move there tomorrow if I could! :-)

(Well, maybe not, but you know what I mean).

Let the company have the bike then buy another cheaper?

To sell them as cheap as they do they have to make them cheaper – so cheaper steel tubing and cheaper paint.

Get it off to a proper powder coaters and it’ll be fine.

Used my Tech X2’s with 180mm rotors all week in Morzine bombing everywhere – 100% perfect, no fade, no problem.

Also have M4’s on my Orange 224 and no fade whatsoever. I brake very hard, but I don’t drag the brakes though.

Why not do a self-organised trip?

My wife and I did exactly that for our Honeymoon in 1993.

We flew into Kathmandhu and upon arrival organised Trekking permits when we were ‘in country’. In 1993 that was virtually impossible to do outside of the country.

We then negotiated with some local official (i.e. bribed them) to obtain 2 tickets on a 6-seater light aircraft to fly Kathmandhu to Lukla (Edmund Hillary’s aid landing strip). Again, there just wasn’t a way to do that from outside the country at that time. Don’t know if this has changed, or if Lukla is even still used for flights – it was a very dangerous landing strip hanging off the side of a mountain. There was, at the time we flew in/flew out, the burned-out fuselage of a light aircraft that had crashed (yikes!).

From Lukla, we then trekked on our own (no guides, no porters) right up the Khumbu Valley all the way to Everest Base Camp. We also scaled neighbouring Kala Patar which has magnificent views of Everest, the Khumbu Glacier and ice flow and also looks down on Everest Base Camp 1.000ft below (Kala Pattar summit is 5,600m/18,373ft). Breathtaking!

On the way you can take in Pheriche, Namche etc – many stimulating villages, Sherpa settlements, monasteries and markets.Although the entire region is sparsely populated indeed.

After Gorak Shep and summiting Kala Pattar, we then trekked back via a roundabout route to Lukla and flew back to Kathmandhu. We spent a further week or so in and around Kathmandhu, wandering around various sites, monasteries, getting even deeper into the culture.

We were in country for 5 weeks in total.

I still have a lot of notes from that trip, so just ask if you need more info. Quite a lot has changed in Nepal since that time of course, but the mountains and routes haven’t.

An good book we obtained was titled “Trekking in the Everest Region” by Jamie McGuinness. I have my much-thumbed copy right here on my desk. Don’t know if it is still available but I’m sure a Google around may turn up a copy.

Although a daunting prospect at first, organising your own trip and being 100% self-sufficient gives you both enormous freedoms and an enormous pleasure in having accomplished it. It’s not that hard to be honest, and any worldy-wise person who is self-aware and conscious of their environment (not in an eco-friendly sense, but in the sense of being aware of what’s happening around you in terms of the mood of the people, having that sixth sense of danger) should easily be able to accomplish a similar trip.

Since that time, my wife and I have trekked all over the Andes, Patagonia and some very remote parts of the USA on a self-guided, self-sufficient basis.

    Go for it! :-)

Yes – I did, but not chainsuck exactly – the chain would drop between the granny and middle ring and completely jam itself. Had to split the chain or remove the granny on the trail to fix it. Happened lots of times.

I was suspicious that Middleburn had got the spacing wrong betweeen the granny and middle ring – it did look wide.

However, I bought a complete set of Middleburn rings and have not suffered the problem since.

    Dunno why…

Thanks for the suggestions chaps… to answer some of those though:

    – The machine is brand new, so no dirt or poor seals

    – Checked all screws – tight

    – To tamp or not to tamp… seems to make no difference

    – Different grinds of coffees? Have tried 3-4 different types

    – Group head is all the way to the right.. any further and I’d break it

    – Crema device (little back thingy) – is an optional extra and shouldn’t affect the fact that the machine is pi$$ing coffee all over the place

Machine now packed ready for return.

Will check out some of the others mentioned on this post but pls keep suggestions for alternative brands/models coming, ta.

I don’t get why any of us English support him – he’s declared his peurile hatred of us English.

I’m taking a leaf out of the typical Scottish football supporter’s handbook – I support English tennis players and anyone who’s playing against Andy Murray.

    He’s a to$$er.

    Northwind and Trailrat..

I learned proper welding at evening classes at a local college near me. I did a proper qualification in it and learned a heck of a lot.. Mig welding, Arc, welding, Gas welding, brazing, steel fabrication etc – all very very useful. Even bought my own Mig setup and Plasma cutter.

Thing is with welding – a lot of people can show you how to do it, but achieving a proper weld i.e. deep penetration with ultimate strength requires knowledge and a lot of practice. What can look like a good weld isn’t necessarily strong.

Thoroughly recommend doing a proper set of classes – and gaining an extra qualification in the process gave me quite a little lift (OK, it’s nothing to write home about, but at least I can claim I’m a ‘qualified welder’!) :-)

Not much info on the project there…

The proposed project, a mountain bike training area, will significantly increase the amount of visitors who stay at the Ethereley Farm campsite, which is currently adjacent to the proposed bike area. The training resource will also provide an opportunity for school and corporate groups to visit and enjoy the new facilities.

Hmmm, and how will this benefit local riders???

Compress all the way and measure the amount of travel you have.

Several people seem to be having problems with the new Fox’s not achieving full travel.

I sent mine back and got a refund.

Looks like fun.. your snow camo Nicolai almost disappears in that environment. Adam’s dayglo Mojo would stand out I bet.

Unfortunately my back was locked up all day and have been wandering around the house with heat pads and hot water bottles..

    It’s not a bodge.

Simply adjust the stop outer limit screw on the front derailleur so that it doesn’t shift the chain further than the middle ring.

    The USA Marzocchi 44 RC3 Ti’s at $325 are last year’s model – 140mm only.

Shame, as I really want the 2011 150mm.

    Compelling price though!

There are some amazing deals on Marzocchi’s in the USA, and while it’s tempting, for me it wouldn’t be worth saving the extra to have any issues should I need to action the warranty for whatever reason.

The 44 RC3 Ti’s are available for £550 online and any price difference would soon be eaten up by UK->USA shipping charges, phone calls, hassle, time out of action etc…

    Digger90

Agreed on the Marzocchi’s – well worth a try now that they’ve solved the 2008/2009 manufacturing problems.

I’m about to get a pair of 44 RC3Tis – 3 year warranty, no hassle, no requirements, no excuses. Buttery smooth and plusher than a sofa! :-)

A manufacturer would have to be very, very certain about the quality of their product to offer a 3yrs warranty.

RockShox and Fox (both of which I’ve had) certainly aren’t falling over themselves to offer that kind of customer surety.

I use a 40 tooth unramped (DH) ring on my 2×9 bike – purely because I had it lying around.

    Works perfectly.

don’t know why but the ones that wear hats are like Kamikaze pilots

Reminds me of 20+ years ago with my girlfriend who said the same.. she always used to say “Beware the hat-wearers, they’re unpredictable”.

After that, I used to look out for hat-wearers and sure enough, many of them did do unpredictable things.

Obviously a rare case of a woman being right! :D

As a seller there are some instances of him being slow to post.

Er, there is evidence of much more serious issues with freeform5spot than slow postage Andy!

Following the start of this thread he has come forward and offered to make amends

And hasn’t done so yet – let’s wait and see whether he does make amends or not.

Arguably this should have all gone on behind closed doors, so to speak and preferably before this thread got going.

It did – I tried in vain for SEVEN MONTHS(!) to resolve this with freeform5spot / Peter Gratwick / bustafajones. This is all detailed in this thread.

I’m not the OP, I replied to the OP’s suggestion of a Seller Feedback rating or forum, which is a very good idea I think. Hence my reply. In it I mentioned the one and only person I’d had a poor experience with, freeform5spot, and doing so kicked off this debate.

I’m pleased that it did. If Peter Gratwick does actually make amends then so far as I’m concerned my issue with him over that sale is done. However, this thread (and others) have exposed him as a professional Trader with unreliable trading practices that lowers the standards of the STW Classifieds for legitimate buyers and sellers on there.

This is not about just being late to the Post Office.

Personally, I think the simplest idea is to create a “Feedback Forum” where people’s Usernames can be listed and Buyers/Sellers post their experiences – or not – as they see fit.

That keeps it separate from spamming up the main Bike or Classifieds Forums, and would make it the ‘go-to’ place to see a Seller’s rating.
