devs, how are swampthings (a mud tyre) brilliant on roots?
A> they’re not! – Maxxis do many tyres that would be far better on roots.

No you are absolutely right. They are rubbish. I made the roots bit up after buying them and then feeling embarrassed about how poorly they were performing in my local forest where I ride 70 miles a week. If only I had thought about trying some other tyres first, I would have been better placed to make my judgement. How foolish of me, thanks for bringing it to my attention.

I dunno if they collapsed altogether but they definately had difficulties and stranded lots of Scottish travellers across the pond. I’m sure I can remember Jackie Bird telling the nation of the misery. Hmmm, a quick google of globespan and stranded kicks up a worrying amount of hits!

devs – maxxis mobsters? i run one on the back its pretty good on roots

Nope! Right manufacturer though. I’ll give you a clue. They start with “S” and end with “wampthing”. Brilliant on roots and in snow but you ain’t gonna win any races on them (unless it’s a wet root and snow race).

i’ve never found a tyre thats particularly good on roots specifically

I have but they have stopped making them so I’m not telling you in case they run out. 🙂 Mind you they’ve got a lot higher rolling resistance than NNs. One of my pals is a Schwalbe fan, swapping RRs and NNs depending on the season. He seems to struggle more on the roots and particularly on the ice than anybody else.

Wow, never knew that Black Steel was a cover! Loving the Sisters too. As far as All along the watchtower goes just about every version is better than the original. These are my faves in ascending order; U2, Hendrix, Waterboys and the best is the Dave Matthews band live version.
My contribution is Johnny Cash’s Hurt.

18 descents of Ft Bill is not an afternoon jaunt, that was over 6 hours of continous riding and ascending by an extremely talented rider in an endurance event. Most mortals would struggle with 1! 16 descents is the same as going down Everest.

Quite a lot of people got caught by them in Canada when they collapsed too. I’ve noticed by the adverts on TV that they are back but I don’t think I will be using them any time soon.

What does your broadband do if you connect it to the test socket with the faceplate off?
How is the extension wiring connected – this should be connected to the faceplate you took off. Blues should be connected to 5s and 2s as per the link above. Unless you’ve got old phones you can disconnect the oranges. They are redundant bell wires but their being connected can degrade your broadband connection speed.

devs, no matter how powerful the treadmill, there is no way it can stop the plane taking off. Ever.

devs… sorry for being so ignorant, but can you explain to a relative moron like myself exactly how you plan to keep an aircraft stationary by just using a rolling treadmill?

MT misses my point entirely. Scenario 3 which I pasted directly from a website that explains the whole thing would only be attempted by an idiot because of the reason you are trying to point out. The treadmill would need to be “powerful” to start the whole thing moving in the first place.

FN Are you taking the piss? Are we still in frictionless wonder land or the real world? In frictionless wonderworld the ac will stay still on a treadmill. In real world you would have to use enough forward thrust to counter the friction of bearing and weight on wheels on ground.
Any more thrust would give forward motion relative to the ground and air and lift would be produced.

What about if a helicopter is weighed in a box and then takes off and hovers. It’s still inside the enclosed box so does the box weigh the same?

If you had all read the link above which explains why people get the wrong idea about the question, only a complete idiot would try to attempt 3. Case 1 is the only question which has the answer yes the ac will take off. It’s a good one though and has certainly had the old grey matter ticking over. The main problem with this one is getting everybody to see the same question. Now I have had it explained it really is simple.
LS, your statement is a bit daft if you think about it. I have pulled a 20 ton ac along the ground. The effort just about gave me piles. The treadmill would have to be very powerful. Your average gym jobber need not apply

When the question is explained as in the cases below it’s simple:
    1) An airplane is sitting at rest on a very powerful treadmill. You are at the controls of the treadmill, while I am at the controls of the airplane. On some signal, I begin to attempt to take flight in the plane, and you attempt to match my speed to try to keep me stationary. Will the plane take off?

    2) An airplane is sitting at rest on a very powerful treadmill. You are at the controls of the treadmill, while I am at the controls of the airplane. On some signal, I throttle up the airplane and you turn on the treadmill, and we conspire by our joint effort to try to keep the plane stationary relative to the ground. Will the plane take off?

    3) An airplane is sitting at rest on a very powerful treadmill. You are at the controls of the treadmill, while I am at the controls of the airplane. On some signal, I attempt to take flight in the plane, but you match my speed with the treadmill and keep me stationary relative to the ground. Will the plane take off?

In case 1 it will take off providing the treadmill is long enough. Too much confusion and interpretation over the question. Nice to see the really intelligent people explaining their viewpoints with such clarity in terms such as “you’re thick.”
What if the ac wheel bearings were from Superstar?

Having read up on this now. If the wheels were frictionless i.e. the ac stood still if the conveyer moved backwards then the ac could take off put that is not how the question is worded. Forward speed does not equal conveyor speed in that case. To all the nay sayers take a kite down the park and run with it till it takes off. Then go down the gym and run on a running machine with the kite. When it takes off come back here and post the results.

devs… it’s a conveyor that matches the plane speed in the opposite direction, so your scenario 2. Unfortunately you are wrong in that you think it won’t take off though.. [:D]

It won’t. The ac is standing still with regards to the air. It has no airspeed. There is no air [1] going over the wings to provide any lift so it cannot take off.

[1] Except for maybe some prop wash but this alone is not enough to make a plane take off otherwise they would be capable of vertical take off from a standing start.

I have a Nomad and a Summer Season. I can’t see any reason to “upgrade” for quite a long time. Unless the marketers get cleverer or the massive find the next “must have” big thing that will improve my riding and enjoyment by umpteen percent.

Ok, as said before delete temp internet files. Go to adobe.com and install latest flash player. Go to java.com and download the latest java version. Do windows update and make sure you are up to date. If it is still slow on some sites it could possibly be your MTU size. You’ll have to google how to change this as you may have to do it on your pc and/or router. Plusnet traffic shape (throttle) so check it at different times of day to eliminate that. Whether it makes any difference to this problem or not the best thing you can do is download norton removal tool and run it. Stick on AVG, Avast or even pay for f-prot or Kaspersky. Norton is worse than half the virii it supposedly protects you from!

I can’t believe I’ve never heard this argument before! Which way is the conveyor going. Is the aircraft powered or not?
Scenario 1. ac not powered but conveyor moving it quickly enough through the air to create lift then it will take off, then stall.

Scenario 2 ac moving under its own power at the same speed that the conveyor moves in the opposite direction. No air over wings, no lift, no take off.

I live next to 2 airfields and know lots of aerospace engineers so i obviously know what I’m on about. If you disagree with me you will feel my rock and power washer.

The nice ones are between Cullen and Portknockie on the Moray Coast. The unridable ones are called the Giant’s Steps and are east of Cullen on the coastal path. It’s a great ride but that bit is quite intimidating even on foot. We rode the grass to the right after carrying down the first half. The “steps” at the top are 3ft drops with little ledges to stand on. I’m sure Hans Rey or Danny Macaskill could do it but no one has as far as I am aware.

    But these are great fun

I find weight back works and you DO have to brake and almost trackstand to get round some of the bends on some of the steps I’ve done.

Typical, fantastic winter with no job and no car! I would be in Glencoe now if I could get away. Nothing like a good epic winter day out on the hill.

I can’t believe I played rugby for 23 years to get my aggression fixes. What I should have done is became a London bike commuter. They all seem like much worthier adversaries capable of decking allcomers with ninja style skillz. I wish it was like that round here, a couple of cars actually pulled in to let me past the other day on one of my rare road encounters.

Use CO2 cannister to seat tyre. Blow up to 60psi. Leave for a while and bounce, manipulate or even ride if you want. Deflate. Put sealant in through core. Reinflate with track pump. Simple. If you have to use CO2 with the sealant in the tyre, Have the valve at the top so all the sealant is at the bottom. I ghetto’s some Swampies and they are great, particularly in ice and snow. UST is simpler and more confidence inspiring though. Having said that, next time I buy wheels i’ll go for the best deal whether it is a UST rim or not as a ghetto system is simple enough after the first time. I’ve already got me some Highrollers to ghetto as my hardtail summer tyres.

Peace, love and hugs. We don’t see many horses. There was a white pony thing on Rushup Edge last time I was there. It tried to eat my t-shirt. Fortunately it hadn’t reckoned on my horse whisperer skillz and after a polite word in its ear it let go.

    Rudeboy said this:

Devs; I don’t particularly get ‘upset’, I just find puerile, insensitive comments a bit tiresome.

Not too long after saying this:

I think I’d want to stop short of stoving her head in with a claw hammer, and then dismembering her before burying the bits in different counties

    and this:

Was there any need for that? Granted, I’m having a little laugh with you, which I’m sure you understood, but is there any need to insult a member of my family?

It’s a little confusing seeing as you are appearing to contradict yourself at every turn. Are you bipolar?
