They look good but I would not put it anywhere near my bikes! Pressure washers are the work of the devil.

One of my boys has been sent home from school. Just went down to look at the river with him and watched it burst its banks. It's not good, particularly when you condsider high tide is at 12 noon which backs everything up. Some people have only just recovered from 2002 when it went last. traffic gridlocked. Bike is the fastest way around town. What tyres for muddy river crossings?

Shi-ite! There is a massive chocolate river at the end of my garden today. Luckily I'm about 10m above it. It hasn't let up at all for over 36 hours and it's still lashing. Things are not good at all. It would appear that we are about to have our 3rd 1 in 60 year event in 12 years.
On the bright side it was brill riding in the woods last night. It was like riding round a log flume!

Why goretex trousers in the desert

I wish I had the photo's of my "home" for 2 months just after 9/11 before and after we realised it was a big wadi. A wadi being a dried up river bed and the reason we found out was the rain like you've never seen and flash floods that swept everything in their way miles downstream. If I hadn't been to the jungle during a tropical storm the desert would be the hottest, coldest, driest and wettest place I had ever been!

Mine got trashed on rock on the back of the local hill.

LOL! Most of the people on this forum would travel 3 hours or more to ride something like your local hill. 😀

Don't you want heat to go that way? It dissipates it through the caliper and into the frame. It would be a cool night ride effect though to have rotors that glowed red in the dark!

My pal did NyA and CyB comfortably with 32:18 on his Gary Fisher 29er.

Mine came today too. 38" spot on as shorts over lycra. Would be ok over baggies but not if you had pockets full of stuff. There's no pocket holes anyway.
I got mine from ebay but found this since. It's grade 2 stuff but seeing as you are about to butcher it it seems like a good deal.

I haven't gone the whole hog and started drinking beetroot juice but beetroot pickle on sarnies absolutely rocks. Trust me. Other people must think so too because Tesco keep running out of the stuff.

If you think the A9 Perth to Inverness is bad try the A96 Aberdeen to Inverness.

With you on that one seeing as I live right in the middle. Maybe that's why I enjoy the A9 so much.

Mrs F's bike has On One Reetard rims – they've been great rims, but don't look likely to work tubeless because I can see through the weld on both rims – anyone had success making Reetards work tubeless?

If you use the bmx tube method there will be no problem.

Not trolling ( much) but can anyone explain to me the attraction in riding the WHW?

Its legacy, its heritage and just because it's there. You're not necessarily supposed to enjoy it but at least you can say you've done it. 🙂

Without wanting to sound like a patronising tosser, if you read the few posts before the Rapha one Blackdog you'll see what I'm on about. For some reason this latest forum format does make it easy to miss posts and threads harder to follow. Bring back Usenet. It's a far better medium.

I was trying to point out the irony that someone who will heat their whole garage and neighbourhood just to dry their shoes and will pay extortionate amounts on over priced kit which is not any more functional than stuff at a quarter of the price, is prepared to try and lecture someone on wastefullness. It's like Nick Griffin extolling the virtues of multi cultural and interated communities.
I do realise picking Rapha as an example will upset a few of you poor sensitive little souls who have images to maintain whatever the cost. Sorry. I should have picked a better example like yumeya components.

Me too. Ride till it dies but if you have a powerlink in there I would replace it with a newer one. I have learned this from bloody experience.

There was a Gary_M on the old forum that was happy to buy Rapha or whatever it's called gear and pay a ton for shorts. Is it the same one or are we being duped by the name change flaw?

as an aside, sod a wedding dress – I'm gonna do it in my kilt – all on the same day. Ok, I may just have to get some bystanders to chuck tomatoes at me or maybe just walk past some in Tescos.

Bejaysus. Is the company such that Jojo struggles to keep up? I was tempted to come on one of these bashes but now I'm scared to. I mean she's not excactly slow in mere mortal's terms.

Hmmm. I've walked bits of this and supported 2 walking expeds up it but never done it myself. I think I'll wait for a sub zero weekend this winter and give it a go over the 2 days. In bike effort terms where is a good half way overnight hotel/bunkhouse/B&B stop. Nearby bar essential!

I had 2 OTBs in the same place on Laggan black yesterday. It was on a bit I've never had a problem with before and would consider it to be an easy bit compared to the rest. The wierd bit is I have no scratches, no bruises and don't even feel slightly stiff today. I must be getting really good at falling off. 😕

Know the bit you mean. Hope he's ok. It's never nice to see or hear about stuff like that. 🙁

Dunno what Fruit has got that gets you lot so wound up but i watch with amusement and surprise. In the real world people slag off others products all the time. It's rule number one in the book of life. Big up yourself and make veryone else look crap.
So he imitated someone else to do it. Wow. I think if the mods were to reveal the many logins used by a few individuals here there would be a few red faces. I used to enjoy unearthing cyberschizohrenics on usenet, it was ever thus and always will be whilst people can hide behind the anonymity of a monitor. It's hardly the greatest crime but it really seems to have got your backs up in a disproportionate way.
Personally I will still buy his pads and cheap BBs whilst they continue to be much cheaper and just as good as the competition. He can ram those seat posts up his jacksy they look shi-ite. I do busines with people I despise. You have to. It's not like you're making friends with them or anything. It's just business. I just can't get excited by it all.

The alloy freehub easily outlasts 4 cassettes

Now I'm a big chap and I put down a lot more power than most so this might not apply to many but the damage I did with a 970 cassette in just 3 weeks was enough to convince me. It took me and a pal (both engineers) ages to get it off. I was only taking it off to swap wheels between bikes. Individual rings had snapped their rivetting together and some had dug in considerably more than others. If it had been left there probably would have been shifting problems initially and I reckon that some of the rings could have mangled their way right round. I have bought a steel freehub but use 980 or XT on my other alloy ones and haven't had anything like the same damage since. There are those little cosmetic dents however on some of the rings.
As an aside I have only ever had to replace the main hub bearings and got new springs for nowt from the nice man at the trade stall at Fort Bill. Everything else is like new. Your maths may well be correct but I would not be happy and would not have the confidence to take a mangled hub out into the hills. When you can pick up 980s for £30 I don't see the need.

Got the Hope because you can wear it on your helmet too. There's not a lot in it performance wise.

I use SRAM 980s nae bother. SLX are probably ok. I put a 970 on and it took me ages and a lot of swearing to get it off. I'm not sure the damage caused would be just cosmetic if left long enough but I have no intention of finding out. Just don't pay the silly prices for XT or 990, there still plenty of cheap ones to be had if you search.

Have found Maxxis Swampthings awesome in anything wet including roots.

My experience too but there is a very self important person on the forum that will tell you you are talking nonsense and that it is not possible! Can't remember their name but I'm sure they'll be along soon.

Married with 2 boys. Ride most nights and once a weekend but not too many all dayers, maybe one a month. Never been on a bike holiday but that's because I do rugby trips and get at least 2 weeks skiing in too.

I've played both and I'm very sure about that. My comment was aimed at the set of 6 comment above! I'm a Scottish person with no axe to grind or chip on my shoulder like you silly people down south do when it comes to league and union. You can check out our league team, the most northerly one in the world. Look up Moray Eels. They are mostly the same lads who will be playing for Lossiemouth RUFC on 5th Sept.

Hey Spey Stout – you not got that out yet? Are we gonna have to come round with a press gang and force you out? Mine is a year old nearly and has very cosmetic rust where the chainstays join the seat tube and where I've had chain suck. I think it'll be good for a few years yet!

My woods are a rootfest. After finding myself at 180deg to the direction I wanted to go a couple of times, one of them next to a very big drop, I binned my Conti tyres. Got myself a 2.5 ST swampthing for the front and a 2.5 Highroller for the back. Got really fit lugging those around but I forced myself to attack the roots and gained confidence. All of the above tips are good but the main thing for me was to realise that you WILL lose grip on wet roots every now and then. Learn to go with it. All the MBUK cliches of look in the direction you want to go actually work as your body will self correct. This was my twopenneth worth.

Make lots of noise, wave your arms or even better a big stick and move aggressively towards them. They move. Unless of course they are protecting a helpless infant as referenced above. 🙂
Trees move a bit slower unless you are in the woods alone at night when they seem to move around a lot in your periphery.

How can they do 2km in possession? The pitch is only 100m and they don't run up and down it 20 times. That must be for the whole game which isn't very impressive really – until you try and play a game. You run an awful lot further without the ball!

Just dug out my issue kit. My trousers are 104cm (kin hooooooge) but fit ok over clothes but would probably be too baggy just over lycra. The drawstring sorts it all out. I'm a 38" 96cm waist btw. Just bought some 38" to chop off and cycle in. The longs I've got now are like brand new and too good for fishing to butcher.

Aye the Brit ones are rubbish for kit. I have a couple but use my Aldi special for biking. Have a look at flecktarn.co.uk for some from other nations. Seem ok but at that price you might as well buy a bike specific one!
