Nice. Now if it was only racing green and 29+ it would be a thing of immense beauty 🙂

My 5th. Done it as solo and pairs. I’ve changed one set of brake pads in the last 2 years and they were both wet and muddy. This is down to bedding them in first. I respect opinions saying that bedding in isn’t necessary but they are wrong :). If you put a fresh set on get your pit bitch to bed them in on the hill. If you don’t they won’t last the event. True story science fact right there.
I’ve always done laps in pairs as a pair, maybe push it to a triple in the night to let your partner get some kip if necessary.
I’ve used the big marquee as base when I solo’d because it was warmer than the tent I took. Take every bit of clothing you ever owned and change as soon as you finish a lap. Never let the wet kit cool you down. Take an old duvet or sleeping bag that you don’t mind getting mucky and wrap up in it as often as you can between laps. Ardents are fine but maybe too heavy if you are a serious racer. It’s a grippy course if it isn’t icy so fast tyres can be used but a bit of volume is nice up top in the wee small hours. I find the course really jars and hurts then. Don’t touch the condensation in teh portaloos, it hasn’t come from your breath and don’t wipe using the red light from your headtorch. 🙂

You’re just unlucky! I’ve had one pinch puncture in over 2 years. If it’s thorns tubeless is the only answer really. Laminate floor underlay and a ghetto BMX tube. Bedmaker here will tell you exactly which one is best.

I can do 42 min laps without bursting too much of a very considerable gut and before said gut catches up with me on lap 3 🙂 If conditions are as last year and the course is the same I’d imagine you’ll comfortably be 37-45mins over the 10 laps you do (you’re doing some for me, I’ve got a Slipknot gig to go to after).

Yes you can check the times on the Sportident website.

Have all you fully rigid fans ever ridden the Puffer course? It really hurts after a while.

Will put a triple on lurcher if I get time, otherwise it’ll be as seen. Mukluk and Krampus on standby. Liking your steed Al.

2533kms all off road, much of it fat. Should have been much more but broken ribs, RSI and lethargy put paid to that.

For the guy who said he would not recommend the larig ghru on a bike he must be on drugs its a must ride trail for most people i know. If i remember correctly it was voted trail of the year by one magazine.

There is the little bit down in to Rothiemurchus and there is the complete thing. One is a lot of fun and one involves a lot of hike a bike over boulder fields. I suspect that most people you know haven’t done one of the options above. 🙂

AS30 with wifi control on your phone is great. It’s just not good for chest mount.

Sealskins were on special last week on the Sportspusuit site. I got another couple of pairs to go with the ones I already have and my few pairs of Aldi ones. It’s still not enough if the Puffer gets nasty. 🙂

Did you manage to sort out the buttons isse FunkDunc? I have the same problem now. I’m guessing that it’s not the genuine article then. It still works, just with extra faff.

I imagine from the phrase that you’re Scottish. And I also imagine you think the term ‘sassenachs’ is somehow insulting or derogatory, similar to if I were to call you a jock.

Sassenach is in no way insulting or derogatory unless it pertains to their ability to deal with 2 flakes of snow. I can’t imagine anybody being upset by being called a jock either. Unless of course they are one of the irrelevant people that run around looking for things to be offended by either in person or on behalf of others. Chill petal, may your fat wheels find some snow to play on and you have a blast. I’ll be on frozen mud and ice tomorrow instead, I’ll give the snow a rest this weekend and watch the TV coverage of how 2″ grinds huge areas to a standstill and dominates headlines.

I just went with a Mukluk 2. I wanted more gears and holier wheels than the Fatty was offering at the time. I’ve never looked back. The only things I’ve changed in 2 years are tyres, pads and a chain/chain ring.
I am now toying with the idea of 1×10 and a Bud/Bud combo for extra weight dispersal on snow which may eventually end up as a new 5″ bike if it doesn’t work. If you don’t get snow or live next to a beach with very soft sand then I’d just get the Fatty and upgrade as necessary from there.

Maxxis Chronicle users, what tyre pressures are you running?

It’s about 15psi according to my not very accurate track pump gauge. 17.5 stone on Rabbit Holes. So far I have found them to be excellent on mud, roots, snow and even coped quite well with boilerplate ice. They are miles better than the Knards they replaced but obviously they are a bit more draggy. Riding the Knards recently was a hang on for grim death sphincter twitching roller coaster ride but the Chronicles have brought back a bit of confidence and you can actually chuck the bike around a bit on greasy trails.
I’ve got some fancy reflective tape coming for the holes and gorilla tape to make them tubeless. This will happen over the hols. Might even post some pics 🙂

I have given up on waiting for mine to die, I just rotate them with Teva Links and VXi’s when they get soaked. Over 2 years of proper abuse and they are still going strong. Yes they’ve gone a bit wrinkly where they bend with the toes but they are far from falling apart. Comfier than anything else and grip like sheeite.

This might explain why I’m hanging out my arse on my krampus. I just realised it’s a 36t at the front. I’ve got up just about everything blaming how shit it felt on being overweight after injury. It’s good training I reckon but I’ll be buying another NW 32t. 🙂

I think some people here would die if they came to a festival or rugby weekend with me. Not because they couldn’t handle the drinking, they wouldn’t survive for long with their nanny attitudes. 🙂
10 on that pish quiz, drink once a week in general but proper blow off steam. Will have 2-3 multi day sessions in a year at festivals or lads weekends. Probably the worst kind of binge drinking but it keeps me out of trouble 🙂

Puppy pads or disposable nappy for a couple of hours and then under a radiator or in the conservatory in summer. Dry for next ride. Spray with Grangers too, it stops them getting as wet.

The cameras are a con. Very few are connected, especially north of Dalwhinnie. None monitor the duals North of Perth. To get pinged you need to be “quite a lot” over the average and that is nearly impossible just now unless you travel late evening/early morning.
My experiences so far have been good on a Sunday and absolutely dire when my actual average was 40. It was quicker from Elgin to Aviemore through towns and villages and across the single track Dava moor road. It won’t take too long for people to wisen up and some sort of normality be restored. All they have achieved so far is to reduce journey times and expectations for the majority. It was never the majority that were killing themselves. The nutters are just more frustrated than before and that can’t be a good thing. There have been 2 fatalities that I have heard about since they went in and no reduction in accidents but those figures will not be made public.

If all mountain hikers boycott the area for 2015 the revenue that the area loses would force the issue. Or would that mean they won?

We don’t need no steenking badgers.
I followed one for about 2 miles along an old railway track one night. He just jogged along slowly refusing to get out of my way. I wasn’t brave enough to try pass him. When he did eventually pull off into a side trail I sang the Badgers Badgers song to him, at which point he turned around and growled and started to chase me!
