I have about 3 or 4 Hite Rites in a drawer somewhere. I tried to use them to make a modern version of it. The remote release is where the convenience is. Also, the Hite Rite needs a welded-on seatpost clamp collar otherwise it shoots up and takes the collar with it. I used one of those telescopic two-piece seatposts and fannied around for a couple of years. I gave up and bought a Reverb!

In the 80s when the Hite Rite came out, my mate fashioned a tailgate strut version for his bike. It was spaced out by dropping sockets down the seat tube. Strangely enough, it didn’t increase the weight of his bike by as much a percentage as you would think…

I’m going to keep it! I’d ruin a carbon bike. I was only going to sell it to get a XL version in carbon. The turquoise paint has not worn well. At least in gloss black I can touch it up easier. And now I know all the trouble spots I can apply the heli tape a bit better!

    I’m in Aberdeen

I just weighed the wheel without the standard Superstar rim tape. 700g! That rimtape is heavy!

    Dead on 740g!
Superstar Ultra front hub, Sapim lasers, Crest rim, Red alloy nips. £140 shipped.
I have red alloy valves to fit as well.

Now for the rear. I want a 12x142mm hub that is light and has a quiet freehub ratchet – any suggestions? I will build using Crest rim and alloy nips but with Sapim Race spokes instead (unless anyone can reassure me that lasers are just as strong?). I tend to be heavier on my rear wheel.

Thanks deadkenny. I’ve worked out the parcel dimensions and weight using the USPS website. It doesn’t seem too bad. I used a 3rd party link and on a $1700 frame, the duty and vat would be £200. Still a bargain!
All I’ve got to do is sell my old frame!

If it’s like the SB95 the small pivot bearings that sit in the switch link plates (that the lower part of the swingarm attaches to) are the ones that go most often. I replace them about once every 3 months. They must just get water running into them.
At the same time, I prise off the large switch bearing dust seals and run lube into them and rotate several times. The switch link should be rotatable by hand once assembled and fully tightened (before the swingarm is bolted on).

Something different if you’ve got the equipment:
Hammer in a long handled allen key and then mig weld it to the bolt. The heat will also help to free off the bolt.

I wonder whether Sniper One by Dan Mills will get made into a movie? I read the book in one go. Gripping stuff.

I’m thinking of having a light front wheel built.
Laser spokes, alloy nipples and Crest rims. I can maybe get the weight down to under 680g plus tape and valves. My current front wheel weight is 950g.

I’d recommend a Ridgeback X1 for those that prefer flat bars.
    I’m selling a 19″ rolling chassis if anyone’s interested…

Ok, swapped the tyres to Saguaros and fitted a titanium bolt set to the head of my seatpost.
Now at 31.8lb. I’d like to get to 29lb without spending a fortune.

How much could I save on wheels? I have Hope Hoops with Flow EX tubeless. I could go to narrower rims. Anyone want to swap their Arch EX Hoops for my Flow EX?

I insist on a 24-38 front setup and it’s in steel… so there’s a bit of weight! Any lighter cranksets and SRAM 10s cassettes?

EDIT: Factory tyre weights… yeah right!

I call them trolls because their tone is just ever so slightly sneering. Yes, Charlie maybe came in a bit strong but the response from some people has been a bit over the top. Look back at the posts and see what I mean:

Is charlie the one wearing a T-shirt with a picture of himself on it while carrying a book with a picture of himself on it in this picture he has posted twice already on this thread.

The book is called fat tyre flier and available in all good book shops soon.
    Incase anyone missed that.

No need to do research, from the waffle on here he was obviously someone that was involved in the “birth” of modern MTB – His posting persona is that of an over aggressive “Look at me! Look at me!” type clown who I have no time for.

Never heard of him before, won’t care if I never hear about him again – but happily I’ll be able to recognise his posts in the future to ignore.

I’m really looking forward to not reading this book.

    ^ This! This in spades!!

FML, Repack Rider please please keep posting that irritating picture

    I found these posts under a bridge…

We have a “founding father” if you will and all we want to do is rip the piss out of him and say we wont read his book
Yes folk have have always ridden bikes over rough terrain but he was a player in the sport and the creation of what we all ride today.

The reaction says more about STW, and some folks, than him

    It’s a bit embarrassing isn’t it Junkyard?
I only started mountain biking in 1988, but even then, the magazines all talked about Repack with a kind of reverence. The route from that to what I was doing was perfectly clear.
Of course my dad would say that he was riding the same trails on his road bike in the 50s, but it never felt like the same thing to me.

Of all the things we could be chatting about with Charlie Kelly and people just prefer to throw mud! Don’t get it.

Is it not true? Like I say, whatever else you believe or don’t believe, you can trace your mountain bike to the stumpjumper and it came directly from the breezer, this whole industry, and the sport as it is, came from there. That’s kind of a big deal.

Sometimes an idea just has its time, maybe it would have come along by some other means but it wasn’t just the idea of riding offroad- it was the combination of people and events that led to racing, custom frames, then full retail bikes, then mass market, and that was unique. Like Charlie says, lots of people had ridden offroad, but they didn’t leave the mark.

I’m with these quoted chaps and Charlie Kelly. This thread is depressing to me. It kind of sums up the ‘trolliverse’ the internet has become today. The mountain biking I do today started in 1988 when I borrowed my mate’s Hard Rock that he had just bought. A year later I bought a Bear Valley. Over the years my bikes changed but the lineage was there. From Kelly, Fisher, Breeze and Ritchey et al via Sinyard’s Specialized, GT, Yeti. It all leads to the bike and sport I love today.
I remember reading MB Action in 1988 and 1999 and Zapata Espinosa’s editorials. It fired up something in me that’s still burning brightly today.
I have a dream that one day I will partake in a Yeti factory lunchtime ride, do a loop at Moab, ride around Durango, attend the USA Tribemeet and ride Tamalpais. If I bump into Charlie I’ll shake his hand and thank him for what he helped to start.

This video springs to mind (if only):

I rode my Raleigh Chopper on Cannock Chase during the long hot Summer of 1976…
But I don’t claim to have ‘invented’ mountain biking. I’m with Mr Kelly and his chums. They invented mountain biking as we know it today (even the name: Mountain Bike) It’s all down to the lineage. You can draw a family tree of mountain biking development with those guys as the roots and all the leaves can be seen in our shops today. For example, Geoff Apps had some good stuff but it didn’t develop into the bikes we ride today.

Mine in it’s current setup: 33lbs…
Where are the 5lbs then? Are they all in the wheels and tyres? Or do my scales suffer from over-reading? (they may do)

My weigh-in is as follows so far-
Bars: 720mm Answer Taperlite Carbon 200g (actual)
    Stem: 50mm Renthal-alike 140g (actual)
Saddle: Titec Berserkr DH 240g (actual)
    Seatpost: Easton EC90 400mm 221g (actual)

The weighing will continue over the winter…

The tyres’ factory quoted weights are 1015g for the front and about 950g for the rear. I’m fitting Geax Saguaro TNTs front and rear with the option of a AKA for the rear.

I’m still not sure where the fat is (apart from on me!)

Thanks. But I literally have loads of 6 bolt discs and no centrelocks. So I would need to buy a disc.

    For that money:

BMW 728i (E38). Surprisingly cheap to run and feels like a luxury tank. I’ve had 3 of them. If you get a good one, you can sell it after a year for about what you paid for it. Just MOT, Tax and petrol. E38s were the pinnacle of quality and luxury that wasn’t ruined by electronics. Avoid large diameter fancy non-OEM alloys.
(EDIT: You can get a 29er with wheels off in the boot)

Nissan 300ZX. A bit more exciting. Get a good JDM 2+2 Auto non-turbo with low miles. Nissan reliability.

That’s what I’d get but then I’m not exactly ‘normal’!

Deveron my scales work fine, do you want to see the spreadsheet?

Actually in all seriousness I would! I need to get some weight off mine and would be interested to see what was possible. I’m about to do my Winter strip down and rebuild so I can weigh the current parts and see where the lard is. My tyres are a big culprit but who knows what else? My all-steel drivetrain perhaps!
I have some hints and tips for keeping a SB95 running smoothly so if you want to email the spreadsheet to my address on profile we could swap info.
    cheers.

is your wife expecting you home tonight

    Funny story…

I’m married to the large turquoise aluminium thing in the back of my car. Which is about to get some Guide RS’s. Then all I’ve got to do is wait for the rain to stop.

Actually it’s the depot at Altens. Like 99% of the general public I can’t (and don’t care really!) tell the difference between Royal Mail and Parcelforce.
I’m off to pick it up. Why can’t CRC use DPD?
The last twice I’ve paid extra for next day delivery… It’s arrived a day late!
Oh, btw, staff shortages at Aberdeen Parcelforce. So anything urgent. Forget It!

Might have been an MX bike. I caught one descending Cairn William ascent track a few weeks ago so someone’s using one in the area although fatbike treads are usually very low knobs.

I have a Minion DHF 2.5 at very low pressure on my front, might look a bit fatbike-like…

Can I slightly hijack this and ask the question: Is there a large Allen headed bolt I can use instead of the Shimano 142mm QR axle? I find the qr lever gets in the way of the brake area on my SB95.

I just get the cheapest 10 speed Sram chain from CRC (PC1031 at £14). The cheaper the chain, the thicker the side plates etc. I once used a 1091R, one of the roadie’s super expensive hollow pin versions with holes in the side plates. I twisted a link in a dodgy shift. The 1091 has solid side plates to prevent that.

I worked in a bike shop for 2 years (2009-11). A busy one as well so loads of customers would bring broken stuff in. Only one snapped Sram chain and that was due to a freak accident in a national 4x race. Plenty of Shimano chains failed at the hardened pin. I used to take a 9s and a 10s Sram magic link out on group rides in cold weather just so that when someone’s chain snapped I could fix it quick and not get cold. Used 2 of them in 6 months, neither were Sram chains.

I’m trying a new momochrome filter on my lights, it makes everything black and white.

I once considered using night vision goggles for night riding off road…

+1 for the Sony. It has image stabilisation which makes it better for people to watch your footage afterwards. AS15 upwards has built in wifi for smartphone viewing. The new top of the range AS100 has a wrist screen remote included for £300.
Adapters can be bought which convert it to use GoPro mounts. I use mine with a chest harness and the footage is pretty good.

I think Ringles are similar to Hopes. i.e. the freehub body is held on by a bit of friction and then the axle.
The cassette will have bitten into the alloy freehub body. Mallet and socket time.

They will have to be much lighter, cheaper and prettier than Shimano cranks. I have old SLX and I want M980s. These Thomsons are a bit ‘Volvo’.
