Last time I checked, JE James at Sheffield had one available for demo. Not sure what security they need etc. It’s a foul colour tho! You’d show up on radar!

    I’ve found a 160 U-turn Lyrik on ebay for 250 notes. It’s a 1.5 steerer though!

Don’t bother, you’ll save more and get a better spec bike by trawling the web for clearance bikes. There are still loads of 2009 bikes out there with amazing spec. 2011 bikes are lower spec for the same money. Plus, C2W are imposing a 25% final purchase fee.

Full outers is the way to go for offroad riding. I have used Sram 1:1 with full outers for 4 years. I have replaced the inner cable annually and cleaned and lubed every 3 months. Don’t persevere with a flawed system, just go all out for what works.

Well, I still have my 2007 575 which I will ride up until then, I have Hotlines on the, er, ‘hotline’, if they put delivery back any further they risk all the dealers cancelling their pre-orders. They have been accepting dealer orders from the first batch so I’m pretty confident they’ll arrive in time, Hotlines do not want a load of very pi55ed off bike shops as they have too much at stake!

Only the ones in the vids so far! Officially not available until 1st week of June.
I’m guessing 29lb to 32lb depending on build and how much money thrown at it! Nigel Page’s machine claimed ‘around 30lb’ and that’s with Bombers and Nukeproof stuff is not the lightest around.

I think claimed frame weight is about the same as my 575. I got that down to just over 26lb with some Conti Supersonics (awful tyres!). I put the Syncros tyres back on, adding 1.5 lbs in the process and some other heavier duty bars, stem etc. I’m thinking around 29-30lb with Lyrik. If it’s slightly heavier I don’t mind.

Cycle Scheme have cracked down heavily on people paying the difference to get a more expensive bike, most shops I know are refusing to let you add even as little as 50 quid to the scheme, there have been a lot of slapped wrists apparently! For example, they object to female specific clothing if it’s a male name on the form and won’t allow bike computers because they’re ‘racing’ equipment!
Plus, I think there’s now a mandatory 25% settlement fee at the end to ‘own’ it.

TK Maxx have got some Arnettes for 25 quid at the mo, very high quality and quite durable as mine weren’t scratched after being thrown around the store for a bit before I bought them!

    I’ll kick off:
    JE James
    Lyric U-turn 160-115 1.5 steerer
All my groupset from my old 575 including Hope Pro2, Stan’s Crest rims, Syncros Point’n’Chute 2.5 tyres, New X-7 2×10 drivetrain with SLX 22/36.
First proper ride probably back side of Jacob’s Ladder in Edale.

SRAM 1:1 with full length outer. 3 years. replace the inner annualy, clean it every 3 months. No mis-shifting. Until derailleurs are dead, this will be the pinnacle.

Weeell, I’m sort of ‘in the trade’ and persuaded my boss to become a Nukeproof dealer today and there are no Large Yellows to order from the first shipment. I can’t wait, so Black it is!

Damn, no yellow large left! Oh well, gonna have to be stealthy… Black it is.

I’m about to ‘press the button’ for a Large yellow one. I’ve already convinced myself! I can see me purchasing a large amount of helicopter tape before venturing out.
I may need to start with a hybrid headset to get the 150mm Revelations to fit properly. I think I need a 1.5″ external lower cup to raise the front 20mm with my shorter forks. Am I right?

    Old thread I know but…
Seriously considering the Mega as a replacement for my 575. If I was to replace the rear shock with an RP23, would it be worth it? (RP23 already purchased, so monetary considerations don’t count) More reliable than the Monarch? Better performance? Was speccing the Monarch done for price-point considerations? What about warranty? Would using the RP23 void it?
Another question (assuming Brant is listening). Where is the seatpost binder slot?
I’m a bit confused about the headset compatibility. What would be the recommended headset for 150mm RS Revelations with non-tapered steerer.
    Thanks in advance.

Online retailers always want the stuff back before they’ll post out the correct stuff. A pain but with so much fraud going on, they have to be sceptical. If it was useful kit, a lot of people would keep it and shut up wouldn’t they? EXACTLY! That’s why they ask you to post the wrong stuff back first!

They need a disclaimer or they are breaking consumer law! Complain to trading standards. I did it when a House of Fraser store was closing down and they shipped all the crappy seconds in to get rid – within 48 hours a huge poster with the disclaimer on it appeared in store.

Another thumbs up for SLX. I’ve had mine for a year and the crankarms still look fairly newish. The anodising is awesome!

DT78, that’s quite a serious accusation (ever heard of libel laws?). Most companies use a 3rd party online credit card processor. Je james use sagepay. The store staff for all these online retailers cannot access the credit card details. I work in a non-cycling related online retailers and get quite frustrated when customers virtually accuse members of staff of theft when it’s a problem between the 3rd party processor and the customer’s bank.
mr smokeybear, how about starting a new thread next time instead of resurrecting an old one. I’ve been buying from james for years and yes, they have had problems in the past but my last 4 orders, spread over a time period from February to last week, no problems.
You don’t really give any details, did you just register to complain? Maybe you were partly to blame, let’s hear the full story so we can judge, instead of sniping and running!

Stan’s all the way! I’ve taken tyres on and off with the stuff in and it stays nice and liquid even after months of use. Anything with too high a latex content makes lumps everywhere, Stan’s seems to be just right.

I had a drink with Johnny Vegas after a radio show I appeared on (Genius with Dave Gorman) – very lovely bloke.
I was in the National MTB champs back in about 1991 at Scarborough and John Leslie was one of my fellow racers. They were filming it for Blue Peter. Later that day was stood behind Helen Sharman (woman astronaut) at the water bowser. I got my self on film on both occasions.

I got fed of with regreasing loose-bearing bottom brackets 'back in the day'. I fitted a grease nipple instead of the cable guide fixing screw and as it was a nice new Cannondale, I looked and discovered there were no vent holes in the bb shell so after fitting the axle and cups I proceeded to pump the finest boat trailer quality axle grease into the shell. Several minutes and a large quanity of grease later I got worried. I kept pumping the greasegun. I then noticed a 'worm' of grease coming out of the vent hole near the rear dropout. I had filled the chainstays with grease! There were 2 vents in the BB shell about 1mm in diameter through to the chainstays! Aaaargh!

Get a 575. Enjoy the challenge of a technical uphill: bumps, shelves, boulders, gravel. Have a drink, enjoy the view and then fly down the way you've come.
That's the way we do it in the Peaks.

When the Tories are in power, they slowly try to creep us back to the age when workers were nothing more than indentured slaves and the rich got insanely richer and built large country estates on the spilt blood of slavery overseas and exploitation of workers at home. The next time you wander around a National Trust property, just think about where the money came from to build the place!

When Labour's in power, they tip the balance back towards social justice and benefits for the less well-off.

I went to a Lead Mining Museum once and was shocked at the squalid conditions and exploitation endured by the workers. The unions and Labour have improved the standard of living for working class and lower middle class people over the last 100 years.

What are 'unions'? They are 'clubs' formed by ordinary working people to help improve working conditions and protect against exploitation. They aren't some clandestine organisation pulling the strings of their Labour puppets! They all have democratically elected leadership and the 'levy' they pay to Labour is by the individual choice of each union member. When you join a union, you can choose NOT to fund the Labour party! Thatcher cleaned up the unions in the 80s, it was about the only useful thing she did.

The Tories are funded by rich individuals with their own agenda (to get even richer, that's their agenda!).

I lived my early adult life under the Tories in the 1980s and 1990s. It was sh1t! Recession, cuts, boom and bust, no minimum wage, unfair taxes that only benefited the well-off, no proper training (YTS) to name a few 'benefits'.

They say under the Labour govt the gap between rich and poor has got wider. That may be so but we've ALL got better off financially! We've all moved UP! Under the Tories the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, it ALWAYS happens!

Vote for social justice on May 6th, don't listen to them calling out to the 'great ignored', it ain't YOU they're calling out to, it ain't the poor, the working class, the middle class, these people haven't been ignored over the last 13 years, the Tories are referring to the 'great ignored well-off people' who Labour decided were doing all right and didn't need tax credits, vouchers, benefits and the like. Don't be hoodwinked!

    Rant not quite over…

IF YOU FORGET THE TORY PAST, YOU DESERVE THE TORY FUTURE!

I've got a 27.0 Fred Salmon post but just fancied something a bit nicer…
I've managed to get everything else retro or Bonty, just need to do something with the seatpost.

    Thanks for all the replies.

I'd rather get the frame reamed out as it's for a retro 'theme' build. A 27.0 Syncros would do the job as I'm also using Syncros 1" threaded headset and Synros square taper BB.

If anybody spots a nice retro seatpost, let me know.

I'd actually like to use a retro or current Bontrager seatpost, hence my enquiry…

I run an O2 orbit pda with MM and I can download chunks of the maps to it as and when I need it. I made an external battery pack and it all fits inside a Peli case which is bar mountable. It runs for about 12 hours or more and records my trips. It helps to have it on the bars for bits where the route might get a bit indistinct. Having a pda also makes sense as it is a phone and can run useful apps AND will run Tomtom or Copilot. It's a pocket computer.
The O2 orbit is quite rugged, I've dropped it, got it damp and two and a half years later it's still going although the battery has started to get a bit short of breath.

Old BMWs with 100-150k on the clock and full service history (not necessarily main dealer) 728i from mid 90s is an almost indestructible car with sensible electronics and a fantastic auto gearbox. Will do 35mpg on a long run. Pay about 1500 to 2k, run for a year, maybe 2 and sell for at least 1k. A hardtail mountain bike with wheels and seatpost off will fit in the boot of one and it will shut as well! You can sleep on the rear seat. The sound system is awesome. It's quiet at speed. I once AVERAGED 60mph from Rugby to Arisaig in one.
Big BMWs scare people with servicing costs and stuff but they don't cost any more than equivalent cheaper cars to fix and DON'T GO WRONG AS OFTEN!

    They're also fun to drive.

Alternatively, get a Chrysler Grand Voyager from about 10 years ago. Get the manual diesel and enjoy 40mpg and total comfort. All the seats come out of the back and you can turn it into a camper or comfy van. They're hard wearing and reliable. DON'T buy the 3.3 auto!!! Even with LPG fitted.

IMHO SPDs help to 'smooth out' the pedal stroke on uphill technical sections. I can clean stuff in SPDs that I wouldn't be able to without them. BUT, I've been riding with SPDs for about 18 years and before that I had Look cleats for mountain biking. I use the old red and black DX SPD pedal with Northwave Gran Canion boots and run the SPD spring tension at fairly low levels.
Climb the hill in SPD shoes and then descend wearing a pair of 5.10s. OR, find a way of covering the cleat up to prevent engagement for the descent.
