I have a Mega with 1.5 forks. Measure across the inside of the head tube, if it’s 44mm top and bottom, you will get a 1.5 steerer through but you’ll need to use external cups. Nukeproof make shallow and deep flange cup headsets, get the shallow flange ones for 44mm tapered-compatible head tubes.

A I being thick or will a setback post and longish saddle compensate for a steep seat tube?

Companies love this sort of ‘greenwash’ crap and if someone’s trying to leverage some of the spare corporate cash by giving them what they want to please their stakeholders then good luck to pleasecycle.

I used to work for O2 and they organised a LEJoG relay once. I stupidly agreed to do a leg cos I was one of the only people in my control centre to cycle to work. I was astounded! The money raised was eclipsed by the fuel bill for the chase cars. About 12 cyclists doing approx 12 mph over 15 miles. One vehicle ahead of us , three behind us, all crawling along with hazards flashing. Some legs were completed by runners – imagine how slow they went! But the company went into green-fuelled charity ecstasy!

    This company would love it!

I know it’s Polaris but these seem to be a redesign of Northwave Gran Canion, well, the high top ones do.

    I think I might win…
I caught my handlebars on a gatepost, the bike stopped, I didn’t. My ‘family jewels’ slammed into the back edge of my stem, right in the middle of my ‘twig’. I shouted in pain quite a bit!
Minutes later while drinking a cup of tea, I felt a damp patch in the front of my shorts. I had a look – blood! Coming out of my japs eye!
It did heal up and everything still worked (tested it later…) but it was a bit scary at the time!

go to Rosas in Spain, loads of decent riding in the foothills of Pyrenees, national parks with mtb routes nearby and lots of natural trails on Cap de Creus.
Camping sites available if you want really cheap.

Hi Luca, I’m 6ft 3 inches (190 cms), the L is probably about 1 inch too small for me but it’s good to have a bit of extra room. My Yeti was a L but that was a 19.5. I think a medium might be best for you.

    I rode it!
Climbs very well, I made it up things easier than I did on my 575. I’m well pleased. Just a few tweaks on ride position and also the Lyriks could do with being a bit more plush. The shock is excellent, the 3 positions give a noticable difference. I probably put too much air in, need to experiment.
I need to change the inline post – not a good idea with a 75 degree seat tube! I shoved my self back on the climb to simulate a setback post, still no front wheel lift even at 22-32.

I once thought of making an external fitting headset cup for a 1″ headtube that would allow a 1 1/8″ fork to run inside. If you’ve got a lathe and infinite patience then go ahead…

Wheels are from my 575, I may upgrade to more burly wheels later. Crests have been ridden in the Peaks for a year shod with 2.5 tyres, a few stone-strikes but no dings, I’m nimble!. Rear has Sapim Strong, front has Sapim Race. I’m planning to get Flows on Nukeproof hubs later.

Coincidentally I sold my Lego on Ebay to help fund the Mega purchase!

Uplink has a good point. You could say that about any proud new owner of any top-end bike. After the saving, the parts collecting and the waiting, it WILL be your dream bike! I measured it up against my Yeti 575 that I rode for 4 years and it became ‘part of me’, the measurements were similar but it’s like any new bike, you will adapt to the changes of head angle, stem length, chainstay length and hopefully the going up and the going down will be an improvement. Only an extended week-long test ride would ever have told you anything useful along with tyre, stem and other tweaks. A couple of hours around a trail centre would have given only a superficial impression and could have put you off a great bike because some easily changeable bit of setup was off.
I rode my Mega up and down the street today and it felt weird because I’ve been riding a hybrid for 4 weeks. I borrowed an Epic last week for an evening ride and decided it was totally poo! But it could have been badly set up.

You can replace them, yes. BUT how often? It’s a flawed system that is not durable enough for off-road use.

The BOA system is fragile and there’s no alternative to rewire it. Get the ratchet buckle versions, the S-works ain’t worth it.

Heh, I was gonna get a yellow one, glad I got a black. Photos of my completed build will be up tomorrow.

OMM are doing it this year, who ran it last year? I know Polarus had bought it back off whoever had been running it for years, but now it appears they’ve let it go again. I may enter as I might have a good chance, seeing as it’s in my back yard!

My Large (19.5″) 575 frame is still ‘in the building’ and the effective top tube length is virtually identical despite the steep seat tube. Should be a smooth transition.

Was hoping to have mine this weekend, but hotlines seem to have forgotten about biketart, and they haven’t received theirs

Well, I was in JE James Sheffield today and they seem to be selling their allocation well. Give them a ring tomorrow, I think they’ve got loads of Silver but have no more Large Black left.

I haven’t had a proper ride yet but I’ve got a 400mm seatpost and seem to be able to get it high enough. My main issue is with the steep seat tube and getting the right length stem.
My riding position has evolved over the last two years, this bike is the next step.

I tightened the last bolt up only 30 minutes ago!
Photos tomorrow and maybe will ride it as well, looks too nice to get dirty!
I’m 6’3″ and ordered a large, which is actually 18.5″ centre to top of seat tube.

Ok, starting the build. For those who wanted to know, it has a Monarch RT3:
Now to read the instructions, on the website as nothing was in the box apart from a brief A5 ‘instruction leaflet’

    Transition Bottlerocket.

Is heavier and far more expensive. You could by a lot of nice kit with the difference. It’s not expensive because it’s better, the extra money is added as it comes from Taiwan to USA and then again as it comes into UK. Importers, distributors, customs duty etc all add their bit. An Orange 5 is more expensive because you’re employing British workers. I know who I’d prefer to subsidise: the pie eating welders of Cleckhuddersfax, or maybe Nigel Page’s expensive tastes in daft woolly hats.

Dunno! Early days yet, I don’t think it’ll do the handling any favours, depends on the headset. You’ll need an external lower cup for 44mm headtube to give a lift. I sold my Rev 140s and bought these:
    ebay item ref 370490364201
    Lyrik 160 u-turns for 215 quid!
BUT, in USA, so 50 quid shipping, 65 quid import duty. Arrives within a week tho.
Also needed new 1.5 stem and new headset but if you’re buying a Mega, it has 44mm deep-cup head tube so you’ll have to get a new headset anyway.
If you can flog your 140s for enough, then get some longer forks. There may be some bargain Marzocchis around, I saw some 180mm 66s for 200 quid new.

I had an E32 7 series and could get 2 bikes with wheels off into the boot AND could shut the lid!
I once got a bath into a fiesta and managed to shut all doors (without removing any seats! I could still drive it.

As I have worked ‘in the trade’, I have come to an understanding about how wars are started, why road rage can exist and why you should never pick up a ringing telephone at 17:27 on a Friday.

    and on a lighter note:

Get bikes earlier and cheaper than everyone else and ride them harder at the weekends, pray that those Sundays in the hills last forever.

What’s that friggin music in the background? It sounds quite bad!! I feel like you should be playing some Slayer whilst filming this frame. Or on colour related theme, perhaps a bit of black metal?

It was Silverchair! I was wearing an Anthrax T-shirt while filming if that makes you feel any better!
All I need is my cassette and I’m ready. Photos this weekend of the bike in action.

You’re expecting great customer service from people on minimum wage who spend most of their day standing up answering dumb questions from members of the public, some of which (the questions AND the public) are downright rude and offensive. Occasionally someone comes in and wants to buy something that the staff actually believe in and they feel enthused and will light up. But mostly it’s stuff like “why are you trying to sell me this inner tube? It says 2.125 but my tyres are 2.1 – I want to see the manager!” or “I rode out of the store on my new bike 10 minutes ago and it’s got a puncture already, I want YOU to fix it immediately and for nothing!”.
I know of a cycle retailer where the wages were cut by about 80 quid a month because of the recession. When I go in, I tend not to give the staff a hard time if they appear a little vacant at 2pm on a Friday afternoon!
Plus, a lot of shop assistants today are not spotty school leavers or the retired, they were made redundant from their ‘proper’ jobs and all that was available was a retail job connected with their main sport/hobby. Current retail job is probably tarnishing their enjoyment of cycling and making them hate certain of their fellow human beings who enter a shop as if it was still the 1920s and they are Lord BL**DY Rothermere!!
I’ve done my time at the retail rock face and I thank the Lord I didn’t snap on several occasions and try to ram a trackpump up certain customers rear ends or batter them to death with a chainset!
Going Postal? Going Bike Shop Assistant more like!
    Rant over for now…
Watch this classic, it sums up my feelings: 4 minutes 20 is where the interesting bit starts.

It depends on the nozzle. My Joe Blow could inflate a tyre on my 4×4 from 10 psi to 30 psi in quite a short time but I knackered the head and have put a high pressure head on – restricts the flow badly.

I have a small compressor that’s only good for about 50 psi and isn’t much faster than a track pump, in fact, I use a track pump to take the tyre to 80psi after the compressor’s given up. I always over inflate for the first ride, seems to help the bead seal nicely. I always use a ‘ghetto’ rimstrip as well, even with Flows. I found a superlight bmx innertube and cut it up to make my rimstrip. I think it just helps to seal the bead against the rim.
