Sounds like a migraine which are often preceded by aura or prodrome. Up to half an hour of feeling odd, visual disturbances, depression etc.. following by a smack in the back of the head by a size 6 Gunn & Moore!

I had my right foot's big toenail removed because it was in-growing recurrently. The nail was removed under local anaesthetic and the nauil bed matrix is phenolised (nuked) to prevent re-growth. It's been fine although it is quite sensitive.
