In the short to medium term,I don’t think they are dead, just undesirable.

If you are driving say 20,000 miles a year, then it might be worth it financially, not environmentally though.

I have had a Nissan Leaf EV car for nearly two years now.

Much cheaper than petrol or diesel , about 4 miles per kw of energy.

Servicing is dirt cheap, no oil, filter , no cambelt, no gearbox…..much simpler.

The only real downside, is the range, about 80 miles before recharging.

More ev and hybrids will be sold in the coming years.

I thought about getting the slightly cheaper version with the Shimano gears, but plumped up for the NuVinci model.

The red frame does look better in my opinion though.

The Magura brakes have been very good, slightly wooden feel to them, but they have good power and I have never thought I have been under braked.

Probably ridden the bike for about 2,000 miles now. Apart from a very occasional chain adjustment and very easy chain cleaning, it just keeps going.

I think there is more resistance with the NuVinci geared hub compared to the conventional derailleur system though.

Can usually get about 55 miles to a full battery.

My Trek Super Commuter 8+ with NuVinci hub.

Had this bike about 8 months now. Enjoy being able to do a decent mileage and carry some photo equipment with me.

Very expensive to buy, but the NuVinci hub has been great, smooth, quiet, reliable.

Brooks saddle and a Thomsom layback post have been the only component changes.

    I have a Trek Super Commuter 9+.

Its expensive at £3800,but has been faultless since buying it. Covered about 2,000 miles on it.

Only adjusted the chain once, as it has aNuVinci internal hub gear.

Excellent bike, but it is spendy.

    Kobo Aura One here.

Started reading books on my IPad, but it isn’t that great for extended reading.

Had a Kindle Paperlight, but the Kobo I now have is a much better reading experience.

    Hi Ton,

i recently came to the same end point as you have.

However, I have bought an ebike commuter for road riding , and a Marin hardtail with Lauf forks for my once a week off road ride.

The Marin is fine on fire roads and beginner type single track, I really enjoy being out on the mtb, just take the camera with me and ride very steady.

the ebike commuter still lets me get out on the road, and helps enormously with just getting out and riding.

Hope this helps, I too was contemplating giving up altogether, but the above has worked for me.

    It’s yes from me.

Bought a  Marin Pine Mountain 2 , boost, 650b plus.

I’m more of a bimbler rider now, and have fitted a pair of Lauf forks.

Feels really good, some semblance of comfort without any full suspension, can feel a little draggy on occasions, but a very good compromise as a hardtail.

    Very sad news.

But look at what he achieved. Changed our understanding of many things.

Driving is a privilege, not a right.

Retest every 5 years I would say.

Driving standards and road craft understanding are pretty poor.

I’m an old duffer, most of my generation think it’s a right to drive. most have appalling standard of driving and understanding.

I would agree about setting the cable disc brakes up, but gave up on buying these a long time ago.

Mudguards, yes bit of a pain to fit and fettle. But I don’t think most bike shops will really go to the extra trouble of making them fit perfectly.

I usually fit them in two separate sessions due to the faff. Fit the front mudguard first, and then fit the rear mudguard later.

I seem to have more patience and a better temperament this way.

Been stretching each day since the original post.

Three sessions each day, about 15 minutes per session.

Haven’t had any cramp since, seems to be working a little. Will keep up the stretching routine as I feel that it can only be good for me.

Could have bought a diesel car and continued to pollute the local environment.

could have bought any manner of things that wouldn’t have had a direct impact on the local environment, but didn’t.

could have bought a flash bike , and Audi to drive to trail centres , but didn’t.

    its about choice sometimes.

    not a pisstake….

    @retro83

    whats the problem?

its perfectly legal, and we have had years of exporting to the grid , where the grid has benefited greatly.

all we are doing is storing the energy we generate, and reduce the drain on the national grid.

part of this has involved our financial investment, our outlay.

£7500 solar panels – our money

    £14000 EV car

    £6500 Tesla battery

we did this for environmental issues, long term reduction / being subjected to increasing electricity costs.

Yes, similar to people parking in the disabled parking bays.

Best just to block them in, but very annoying.

I have posted this before, but I will re post, this isn’t meant to be typical, its expensive, and it won’t work for everyone.

But it can work for alot of people who have decided that the energy costs and ICE cars have their days numbered.

We have an excellent south facing roof with 4kwh of solar panels.

We typically get around £800 from the feed in tariff, tax free.

Nissan Leaf car, which can be charged directly from the energy off the solar panels (when the sun is out). This will reduce the energy running cost of the EV car quite a bit.

We then decided that it would make some sense (although not entirely spreadsheet return on the investment) to have a Tesla Powerwall 2 battery installed.

This prevents the excess energy being exported to the grid, ( but we still get paid for this, as the calculation assumes you export 50% of the energy).

So, we can use the stored energy in the PW2, to run the home or charge the Leaf.

We have had a Nissan Leaf for over a year now.

Only drive short distances ( less than 50 miles) for 95% of our driving.

So much cheaper, cleaner for the environment, quieter, and generally better driving experience.

Saved around £800 on diesel, servicing is dirt cheap.

A few taxi firms are using them where congestion charges and emissions charges are in force. They are rapid charging them a few times a day and the batteries are holding up very well.

Won’t be buying another ICE car again.

No you’ve got that wrong on my book.

In my case, it allows me to get out on the bike more and stay active.

I have some trouble with strength and arthritis, riding the mountain bike which I really enjoy takes it out of me due to the rougher terrain etc.

I prefer to ride a normal powered mtb off road, but could probably only manage about one ride per week of say 30 miles.

Having an ebike for the road allows me to get out more, more exercise for body and mind. Also use it for transport, so one less car on the roads.

Good for me, and good for the environment.

When I was younger I used to ride 12,000 miles a year normally, just wish I could do that now, so I have to alter my cycling habits.

There isn’t a one size fits all in most cases.

Ummm, me, retired, ebike for the road, it’s a Trek Super Commuter. Ordinary ( human powered) mountain bike.

probably ride a total of around 80 miles a week in most weathers.

No sitting around for me, pretty much active most days.

Reading a book most evenings, just started doing yoga at home to help keep flexible.

Am I typical? Dunno, but should be interesting to see other replies.
