RichPenny – why would you want to spend any time at all to challenge people when out on a ride? Is that not why you are out on a ride in the first place, to get away from all that stress.

In my experince the majority of farmers know the difference between what is their land and a right of way. Unfortunately people without the time or inclination to separate the two are the ones that ride rough-shod.

Farmers are the custodians of the countryside, through which we all ride and enjoy.

What a group of lycra clad robbers on mountain bikes gonna do one with one of his cultivator's. LOL. Perhaps even as a farmer he might be somewhat smarter than that.

Perhaps he was trying to make conversation. What's the imputation? That he was being noisey/rude/overly defensive in a "get off/don't enter my land type manner?

Chill. Perhaps he's hacked off with MTB's (not you but others) riding across his property and over reacting.

Don't get me wrong I've done a few cheeky routes in my time but my girlfriennds parents own a farm and I've witnessed untold front by people that think they can do as they please on other peoples land.

At the time of typing this there are 3,278 fans. I loaded them up and was delighted to see myself in the first batch. Given that I signed up as a fan recently I've therefore deduced it must be in date order!

Cheers Antony, I'll have a chat with him tomorrow if I need any further information that's not on the report (and he's on duty).

I assume this has been reported to the police?

Whilst I’ve every confidence in my colleagues I’ll dig into the crime report tomorrow to make sure everything is being done to find the offenders and the bikes. I’ll ensure the bikes are circulated across all district stations for observations during intelligence briefings. A Southmead PC stopped a local thief about two weeks ago on a high-end road bike (Colnago I think) stolen from Flax Bourton, so the message is getting out there to be more aware of bike thefts. I’ll also speak to the Burglary Squad DS who has had some success of late recovering stolen bikes.

This looks highly suspicious. If it turns out to be all in order then fine but it needs to be investigated further.

Via the GMP website I have requested they check their databases to see if they have any Lapierre’s of this model reported stolen and if so conduct further enquiries.

The Mendips, Saturday just gone. Wanted to conquer some demons having dislocated both shoulders riding up there in June. Having them re-set under morphine at WSM General was a hideous experience I'm not keen on repeating.

The Cove looks superb. How much is the frame going for? I notice that CRC are selling a 'Handjob – PC'in powder coat green.

Spaceman – If you rode it within its intended purpose you must have been unlucky to break a HJ surely, plus IMHO this bike doesn't suffer to much flex in the back end. For some reason I've always been heavy with kit since a kid and I've yet to damage the frame.

Not at all. And I'm a big lump, without lashings of skill. Tend to bully my way over stuff and the HJ copes with it no worries.

And nobody has suggested one of these? What on Earth?

    Mate,

Have you registered it on Immobilise? There are a lot of cross-border villans committing bike thefts, i.e they steal from Cheltenham and dispose of the goods in Bath but as the forces have local databases they are recovered but go unclaimed as the owner can't be traced. Immobilise is a national database and links to a system (thenmpr)only the police can search and access.

Keep tabs on ebay, gumtree etc and if you have a Cash Converters or similar store in the local High Street it might be worth making some enquiries there.

I take it you have reported to the police? Despite some negative perceptions (some justified) it is well worth it.

    Munque-chick,

Thanks for clarifying that. Thought the PC was most likely wrong.

In my experience Ebay can help but more often than not they are unable/unwilling to supply the information as quickly as the police would like.

    2bit,

Regarding what the PC told you about covert undercover operative, I'm not convinced. The use of Covert Human Intelligence Source's is governed by S26 of the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (RIPA), which I've just spent sometime looking at. Even if an authority is needed an application can still be completed by the PC and authorised (in the Metropolitan police area) by a Superintendent.

Personally I'd ask him to have a look at this again for you. I'm not sure RIPA even comes into play?

Email me your telephone number if you want to discuss it further.

I’m the officer that spoke with agentdagnamit concerning his personal experiences of being the victim of bike thefts. Along with a number of other officers and interested parties we are exploring and implementing a multitude of different tactics and measures to prevent and detect cycle theft within Bristol.

I have a particular interest in addressing the theft of mountain bikes from houses/garages.

In respect of ‘harry too’s’ comments I will brief the uniform teams and the Beat Manager for Pen Park Road and request targeted patrols in that area. I’ve located the crime report and will circulate the attached pictures of the bikes to aid the officers out and about.

This will be an evolving process and no doubt there will be more from me to follow in the future.

I’m interested in any constructive comments/ideas that people might have on the matter and can be E-mailed at Lawrence.jones@avonandsomerset.police.uk or at larryj@hotmail.co.uk.

Had I not been scouring this site the above information may not have come to light. I’m grateful for harry too’s post but if you see anything suspicious, whether it be on Ebay or in the street always report it, either directly to the police or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or the website.

    All the best & regards,

    Larry.
