Failing to stop or report an accident – Road Traffic Act 1988, s. 170(4)
Triable summarily. Six months imprisonment and/or fine. DISCRETIONARY disqualification.

They also have to report it as soon as REASONABLY PRACTICABLE and in any case within 24 hours. Which is different to having 24 hours to report.

It is likely that the car park is a ‘public place’ under the definition of the Road Traffic Act. In order to prove that a place is in fact a ‘public place’ it must be shown that those people admitted to the place in question are members of the public and are admitted as such, not as members of some special group and those people are so admitted with the permission of the land owner . If so it's a public place and subject to the Road Traffic Act.

Sorry, studying this section at the moment for my Sergeant’s exam!

    sootyandjim,

I never went to the Keranga evenings but my mate Brett did I bit of DJ'n there. Meant to be good. When all that was going on I was up in London and missed out by the sounds of it.

Bloody Hell. This thread brings back memories of dark and dingy clubs in a bygone era. Specifically the Kandi club in Bristol back in the early nineties playing dark-electro, industrial. Loved Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly, The Young Gods, My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, Die Krupps. Then at the end of the night it was off to Mickey Finns.

Wednesday I went out on my second group night ride around Leigh Woods and Aston Court. Fantastic, enjoyed it immensely. When I parked my car on North Road I was surprised at the large number of MTB’ers out for the evening and I know it sounds a bit naff but there was a really good community vibe type thing going on. What was a little weird is I’ve ridden the trails in LW for years and during the ride got totally lost until I hit an obviously recognisable section of trail (which was dusty). The bonus was a pint of Black Rat at the end of the evening.

    Mark,

You've shown tremendous inner strength, not to mention a big pair of balls. Keep it up.

Inner strength is our light through a forest of trees,
Guiding our way, always, with the greatest of ease,
Embracing our purpose, down each earthen trail,
And the single reason, we’ll always prevail.

    MH,

Thanks for the initial consideration/offer. Just a figure of speech (tear), I would respect someone else's property.

I don’t doubt there would be some sort of fitting retribution up your way for any type of slight, particularly for a southern Englishman :D

Tony, what is OP (Online Plod LOL!).Please substitute the word frequenting for lurking! The latter has all sorts of unsavoury overtones :-)

I've noted the BMBC link. The only thing is even the Spesh Stumpjumper Comp has a higher spec fork than a RS Tora, which seems a bit odd.

I'm not back into work until 28th. If you or your mate Email me the details to my Hotmail address I'll forward it on and arrange for someone to give this bloke a tug and give his bike the once over. Whereabouts in Bedminster, description of the male, his direction of travel – that type of detail please.

    Si, heihei,

That's why I've picked them because they are different suspension types and I'm not altogether sure how they each react to given situations. I currently have a Whyte E5, which I'm keen on as it's light and feels agile (compensates for my inadequacies) but when climbing it tends to squat/hunker down too far into its travel. I tend to sit down and mash/spin as opposed to being slick and out of the saddle.

heihei that breakdown was very helpful. Thanks.

Si, on appearances alone the VF2’s are a big tempt!

No doubt the police will call him a naughty chap and let him on his way

    – solarider.

WHAT. Guff like this really irritates me. Sorry.

No, what will happen is if there is sufficient evidence then the CPS will charge this idiot with handling (the most likely charge to be proffered) and he will be put before the Magistrates Court. Should he be found guilty the court may well call him a naughty chap and let him off with a slapped ass but it won't be the police. Don't confuse the two.

    PJAY,

I'm 16 stone (big boned and all that guff) and ride a 2007 HJ, in a not altogether skilful manner (browbeat my way over stuff) on terrain such as the Quantocks, Mendips etc and it copes superbly. IMHO the frame is laterally stiff enough with just the right blend of flex (agree with steve_b77). If you ride it within its intended purpose it will be fine. Due to my build/weight and how I shift around on the bike I’m at a loss to see how other riders could have damaged or crumpled their frames unless they are subjecting them to tolerances that it’s not been designed to deal with.

Don’t worry about the £500 tag. Get one.

Still think that stem needs to increase in length (less wandery on climbs as you will be more stretched out) and needs to be a higher rise (will help negate the feeling that you're gonna go over the bars).

I appreciate the geometry is steeper on the E5 and I'm running a 130mm fork but a layout like that maybe? I find that spot on, I'm 5'10" and they're both 5" trail bikes all the same, not a million miles apart.

Go back to a 90mm stem but with a 15 deg rise, get rid of the spacer and sort out the excessive upward sweep (roll the bar back a tad).

Good work. Love a nice HJ.

There's been some balls posted recently about them having a twicthy back-end but I've never found that and I'm a big lump who lacks finesse. Ride it within its capabilities and intended purpose and it will serve you well.

    AA,

Sorry late reply just got back from a ride.

That London team had a very specific M.O. No indication that they were into burglaries.

I spoke to a mate who very recently had interviewed a lad for a number of offences. The lad coughed to the jobs that were put to him and said that he would wait up in car and watch people coming over the Severn Bridge (or along the M4 corridor, Cribbs etc, can’t rightly remember) with expensive bikes on their roof rack and follow them back to their home addresses. That's one instance of how people with high-end mountain bikes were targeted.

    Taylor,

Not that it matters but Leigh Woods is not on my patch. It is policed by J district, which is Weston-Super-Mare. LW’s is the extreme boundary with Bristol police.

Of course I can't comment into the circumstances of your vehicle being broken into 18 months ago, or why you perceive that nobody took an interest in the kind of tools stolen. Did they not make a record of them, did you explain how anybody might use them to affect entry into premises. Even then I can't really think of how that would necessarily help police trace the offender. Don’t know you could be right? Are you suggesting that there was a spate of undetected burglaries where the offenders used your kit to get into houses and make off with peoples bikes?

You’ve got my Email and Ed may have my mobile number if you want to thrash through it further.

I’ve never scratched my head like Stan Laurel, I must say. I’ve played with my tie like Oliver Hardy though!

The quality of CCTV varies massively. Sometimes it’s very good but on a fair number of occasions it’s not of sufficient quality for identification purposes. Having said that many convictions have resulted from CCTV evidence. The biggest bind in my experience is when you go to a business premises to retrieve the CCTV (particularly from a digital multiplex machine) to be told nobody is trained on how to use it and the manual of instruction for the system is missing or now being used to lag the boiler or something equally ridiculous.

The point is, if a victim of crime believes there is a viable and proportionate CCTV opportunity worth pursuing then police ought to do something about it.

Where was your wifes bike nicked from? What reason did the police give for not conducting an easy CCTV enquiry that may reveal the identity of the offender and assist in locating your wifes bike, which they at a minimum are duty bound to do? Did you complain about their inaction? If you want me to look at this for you mail me at lawrence.jones@avonandsomerset.police.uk

Utterly inept and fatigued riding up on the Mendips caused me to give it the Superman over the bars, resulting in the agony of a partially dislocated (subluxation) left shoulder and a completely dislocated right shoulder. To add insult to injury I was waddling around like some improbable penguin trying unsuccessfully (my arms were effectively pinned to my side) to pick up my glasses that had flown off onto the ground. Eventually I managed to pop the left one back in myself but the other had to be reset after copious amounts of Morphine at Weston General. A hideous experience I’d rather not repeat, which has knocked my confidence. Plus the Quad link on my E5 snapped at one of the pivot points. Not overly costly but painful and embarrassing.
