I was looking at this on another website this morning – truly breathtaking.

Imagine what Olympus Mons looks like from the ground – having said that it’s so big it’s acclivity would extend into the horizon and it’s breadth would be indeterminate – lost in the curve of the planet!

The science behind it all is staggering. What’s more amazing is that as a news piece it will probably be a footnote to who Ashley Cole is boffing. This thread will drop off in quick time – whilst another less worthy discussion rages incoherently onward for 18 pages and more.

James Ellroy is America’s greatest crime fiction writer. Dark, hard boiled, moody Americana. Known for writing in short, clipped sentences. Have you seen the film L.A. Confidential? – he wrote the novel.

EDIT – Cletus, good shout +1 Flashman. Remember John Charity Spring from Flash for Freedom! – one of my fav characters ever!

An Instance of the Fingerpost by Iain Pears.

An historical detective story set during Restoration England. Four characters give their version of events concerning a murder. Really, really enjoyable read – think Name of the Rose by Umberto Echo any you’ll have a flavour.

EDIT – Also ‘Q’ by Luther Blissett (no, not the 80’s footballer).

Another historical thriller set in Reformation Europe. Subversive political thriller that keeps you guessing to the end. Riveting.

Michael Johnson – superb. I wonder why he’d not be snapped up by an American broadcaster, but from what I can gather track & field isn’t a big deal out there? I’m sure he mentioned it doesn’t get the coverage that perhaps it ought to.

Thorpe’s been refreshing – clearly he needs to stop prefacing ‘Look’ at the start of his sentences.

    Balding’s been v good.

    Lineaker looked hopeless at times.

In all serious – I doubt it’s anything to do with Strava. A large majority of riders up at AC & LW will be families and such like that have never heard of the word, or of they have, have mistakenly thought it was a model of Fiat car.

Cretinous lines have been going on since time immemorial – and I suspect over the years I’ve contributed to a few.

I’m not big on censorship/life time bans. TJ’s expulsion seems a shame.

The only caveat to that is you must be known outside the forum. Identifiable. Not anonymous – which I consider weak and timid. If you have something to say, say it … but at least extend us the courtesy of knowing who you are.

At least TJ had some balls and didn’t hide behind a screen.

Check out the section ‘Taking further action to deal with nuisance birds’ and apply for a licence under the grounds of public health – danger to the nippers in the garden etc. See what the local council can do for you.

Cfh you miss a bit off the end

is also permitted all year round

under the current general license arrangements.

The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 states that it is an offence to kill any bird – including pigeons – unless a license is held, but section one allows exemption if an organisation or individual complies with general license regulations. This would require a specific public health risk to be identified and other non-lethal methods to be used to disperse the birds before taking the decision to shoot them.

You can’t just shoot a fricking pigeon without being a licence authorised person.

I’d advise against it. The legalities –

The only defence to firing an air weapon beyond the premises is if you can show that the only premises into or across which the missile was fired were premises the occupier of which had consented to the firing of the missile (whether specifically or by way of a general consent).

It is also against the law, in England and Wales, to fire an air rifle within 50 feet of the centre of a highway if this results in someone being injured, interrupted or endangered.

    s. 21A The Firearms Act 1968.

People are also under the misapprehension that all birds considered as vermin can be shot at any time and by anyone, which is not entirely true. All birds and animals are protected by law and only “authorised” persons – and I’m assuming the OP isn’t, who have proper permission can lawfully do so.

The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981

Maybe use a scarecrow or other visual scarer –

    Interesting. Good link.

Goes to show that protecting your online identity is as important as safeguarding tangibles like your smartphone, credit cards, passport etc, and not something to be insouciant about. Good tips at the end about email prefixes, recovery email addresses and backing stuff up.

Hopefully Apple & Amazon will look at examples like this and put in measures to protect their customers – it goes to show that they don’t insulate you from everything out there in ‘cyber space’.

The most worrying for me was his Twitter account being hacked with inflammatory racist comments – imagine what that could do to a persons reputation / career? Not to mention the hassle of convincing the authorities what the facts were.

    Sobering, indeed.

I bought 150mm (spaced to 140mm) RLT Revs from Merlin a couple of months ago. For me it’s a no-brainer – fantastic functioning, reliable bolt-thru fork at a bargain price. I’ve got them fitted to my Hustler. Highly recommended.

    Sancho,

You don’t need to disclose spent convictions when applying for most jobs. Under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 it’s unlawful for an employer to discriminate on the grounds of a spent conviction. However, some types of jobs are exempt from this Act – this means you have to disclose spent convictions as well as unspent ones. These jobs include posts connected to law enforcement, including the judiciary and the police.

The screen on my smartphone is simply not big enough for me to use safely as an in-car SatNav. I’ve found that the SN screen also works much better in bright sunlight. The GPS receiver is stronger and the mapping more accurate IMHO. My smartphone switched screen when calls came in, which was invariably at the most inopportune moment during the route. I generally find that dedicated devices perform better than those that have a different primary purpose.

I’ve just bought a TomTom Start 25 off Amazon and have been fairly impressed. It’s easy to use and has a decent, clear 5” wide view screen. The unit is easily updated from your computer. It recalculates quickly and has an excellent 3D view. The screen lacks responsiveness though. All in all – very pleased.
